A guy and a girl can be just friends but at one point or another one of them will fall for the other,
maybe temporarily, maybe at the wrong time, maybe too late or maybe, just maybe ...forever.

“Can you get me back stage?” Val’s shrieking voice came through the phone and I rubbed my ears.

“I don’t know Val,” I answered, “Things are pretty hectic here and security is tight. I’ll see what I can do.”

I did not want to promise Val for things that I can’t guarantee.

I walked down the corridor leading to studio two, where the live performance was going to be. Everybody who passed me by seemed to be in a hurry as they were getting ready for the show which was in an hour’s time. The boys were already nowhere to be seen – probably doing their final make up in the dressing room.

I was ecstatic to find that there was a rehearsal for a musical – Sound of Music in studio one when we first came for our sound check the day before. I loved musicals. And I loved Sound of Music. I stood outside the dressing rooms trying to take a peek at the costumes and the cast, or maybe even catch some singing.

A bell rang out from studio two – it was a call for all performers to get ready. We had to be ready on stage seated half an hour before. My palms were beginning to sweat. They always do before any performance. Even though I had performed so many times on stage, I couldn’t overcome the nervousness and excitement each time I stepped on stage.

As I rounded the corner, I heard the music of my favourite song – My favourite things.

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens

Bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens

Brown paper packages tied up with strings,

These are a few of my favourite things.

I couldn’t resist lingering behind and singing along. Closing my eyes, I felt my entire soul immersed in the green fields of Salzburg and watching Julie Andrews with the seven children.

A second bell rang out and woke me from my trance. I sighed in irritation as I dragged my feet towards the studio two door as I took a deep breath before drawing it opened.

The performance went extremely well except for a few minor hiccups here and there but I doubted the crowd noticed it. They were too engrossed in the boys to notice anything, even if they went out of pitch. I felt like I was drawn into a pop concert, except that this time I was sitting on stage as a performer. The cheers were a total different level compared to our past concerts. Well, the audience always cheered with encores and stuff, but never this wild and loud. Those were the typical classical concerts cheers and clapping – somehow more civilised and conservative. People here went mad literally, jumping and screaming every minute of the performance.

“Wow, that was something, wasn’t it?” Joel said when we starting packing up.

“Ya,” I agreed whole heartedly. “I guess it’s something you’ll only get when you are a pop star.”

“I’ll make sure I remember the sound of the audience forever,” he vowed.

I laughed at his declaration, but I agreed. “We’re not that bad, aren’t we?”

“You were fabulous,” he looked at me, shaking his head. “Absolutely. They went so high!”

“You are not too bad yourself,” I chuckled.

“Not bad ah, for senior year,” he added before his tone turned sad. “I’m going to miss you.”

Joel had gotten a scholarship to America – he was a smart kid. He would be leaving at the end of the month, even before our graduation.

“Me too.”

“Isn’t it a pity? I was thinking of asking you to be my date for the prom,” he pouted.

I smacked him lightly on the back, “Yeah right.”

“It’s true,” he said seriously. “You know how I feel for you…”

I sighed. Yes, I knew. Joel and I had been friends since our first year in high school. In our second year, he had tried asking me out but I turned him down. He was a good friend, but that was all for me. I didn’t feel any special attraction for him.

“Joel…”

“Ya, I know,” he laughed as he took me into a friendly embrace. “Keep in touch, k?”

I nodded. I was going to miss him.

I helped out the guys with pushing the instruments to the loading bay to be transported by to school. That was the problem with percussion – we are the loudest section; the craziest; the noisiest; the famous; and of course, the toughest because we have the most instruments large and small.

As I headed back into the studio to check if there were any left behind items, Zayn caught me at the corridor.

“Jo,” he called out.

“Hi Zayn!” I wiped off the sweat off my forehead. Moving was tough work.

“That was a fabulous performance,” he smiled.

“Tell that to yourself,” I grinned.

“It was great working with you.”

“Me too. But it’s not my effort alone,” I informed him.

“Of course…” he paused as if he wanted to say more but didn’t know how to go about it.

I waited.

“Stay in touch?” he said suddenly.

“Huh?”

“Maybe we can keep in touch or something… “ he said awkwardly.

“Oh, sure,” I was surprised. “Like how?”

“Can I have your number?” he blurted out.

His question caught me by surprise, “Eh, ok.”

He took out his Iphone and handed it to me. I punched in my number and returned it back to him.

“I give you a missed call,” he said as he hit the dialled button.

My phone started singing Carmina, dancing in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw his face filled with amusement.

“That’s your ringtone?”

“Uh huh. Got problem with that?”

He laughed, “Nope.”

I saved his number into my phone contacts. Hopefully, Val doesn’t start attacking my address book. She used to do it for fun in the past.

“Aren’t you afraid I’ll give away your number anyhow?”

“You are not that kind of person,” he answered simply.

I looked at him, “How would you know?”

He shrugged, “I just know.”

“So, where you guys heading after this?”

“Bradford.”

We stood there awkwardly for a few seconds before he spoke again. “You have a nice singing voice, you know?”

“Huh?” Since when did he heard me sing?

“You were singing My Favourite Things just now…”

“You heard me?” I asked, bemused.

He nodded. “Maybe you should try for musicals sometimes…”

I laughed and waved it off, “Next time.”

“Hey!” I heard Harry’s voice as he and the rest of the gang joined Zayn.

“We’ll going to miss you.” Harry said. Then he did the most shocking thing. He came forward and took me into a hug!

He blushed furiously when he let me go. “I actually like you… as a friend I mean,” he added quickly. “You are a nice sport.”

The rest of the guys laughed except Zayn who just smiled uneasily.

“Hey Jo, give us your number!” Louis said as he whipped out his Blackberry.

I read out my number, and the four of them started punching into their phones respectively.

“Give you a missed call,” Louis said as he started dialling.

“Hey,” I protested. “If all four of you starts to give me missed call, how I know which is who?”

They laughed.

“Okay, I text you,” Niall chuckled.

Louis came forward with outstretched arms, “May I?”

I laughed and embraced him in a hug.

“You are different,” Liam said he took pulled out from his hug of me.

“Huh?” I did not get his meaning.

“I mean,” he explained. “All the girls just go crazy. Not that we don’t like it,” he chuckled. “But, you seemed so… normal… so … not bothered by us…”

“Ya,” Harry cut in. “You treated us like normal friends, which is why we like you.”

I laughed. “You guys are strange…”

“Hey,” Louis shouted out. “Let’s take a picture!”

Grabbing Zayn and me into the circle, the guys wrapped their hands over each other’s shoulders including me, as Louis prepared his phone.

“Luke!” He called out to a crew who happened to walk past. “Help us take a pic?”

“Sure,” the guy named Luke smiled and came over.

“Send to me?” I told Louis.

After pressing a few buttons, he confirmed, “Done.”

“We’ll see you soon, I think,” Louis winked. It was as if they had something up their sleeves – something they knew but I didn’t know.

Suddenly, I had a crazy idea. “Guys, can I ask for a favour?”

“Sure, anything for you!” Niall piped.

“My best friend is a crazy fan. Can you take a picture with her?”

“Where is she?” Harry asked as he looked around.

I pulled out my phone and punched in the speed dial for Val.

“Val?”

“Jo?”

“Are you still hanging around?”

“Ya… I’m still around. Have the guys left yet?”

“Eh, no. Do you think you can get to the back door?”

“Why?”

“I’ll try to sneak you in.”

“REALLY?!”

I found her at the back stage door, standing excitedly. She could barely contain herself as she fidgeted. Concocting a story to the guard about her being part of the band, I got her through easily.

“Are you ready for this?” I asked as I led down the winding corridor to where I left the guys waiting.

“You BET!” she screamed silly at me.

I felt her grip tightened on my arm as we approached the boys.

“Oh my god!” I heard her murmured nervously beside me.

“Hi guys,” I called out. “This is Val, my best friend.”

“Hi Val!” They chorused back in cooperation and I couldn’t help grinning.

“Go,” I pushed Val forward as I got ready to shoot her picture.

She took hesitant steps towards the guys before they embraced her into a semi circle looping their hands.

That must be the best day of her life.

***AUTHOR'S NOTE***

Okay, I decided to do a story on One Direction. But I am not going to try to write too much on the guys' feelings since I don't really know how they think anyway, and it would be unfair. I'll leave them with their girlfriends as well (those three who are attached) - so it's not that difficult to guess who will end up with Jo, right?

Haha, but I'm going to do a twist in the story which might prove to be a little devastating for some of you 1D fans out there.

Anyway, Louis is right. They are going to see each other - very soon. Why? Because they have obviously planned something. But what is it? I'm going to leave you to read on~

Pls drop comments if the story is good and worth continuing?
