Looking through the mirror, I stared down at the pendant in shock. It had never done that before, not that I'd seen anyway.

My hand slowly reached up to touch the necklace, but before my fingers could even brush against it, a ringing erupted in my ears. Pain surged through my head, and I instinctively brought my hands up to cover my ears but it was no use, the piercing ring was in my head.

My mouth fell open in a silent scream, my eyes clenched shut, wishing the pain away as I fell to my knees, but the ringing never stopped, until eventually I blacked out.

~

"Adrian! Can you hear me?"

I slowly took in my surroundings, my vision blurred. A boy around my age knelt beside me, but I couldn't make out his features, everything was too blurry.

Across the room lay a man, covered in blood. A bloody blade lay by my side. Did I do that? I tried to move but to no avail, my body would not cooperate. Was I dying? I couldn't help but wonder, noticing my own blood surrounding my body.

The man lay still, his eyes open but there was no life in them, he was dead. My head lolled to the side and there in the palm of my hand lay the amulet, a blinking glow slowly dying out. The blinks got slower and slower, until eventually the blinking stopped, and my eyes fell closed.

~

Beep....Beep.....Beep.....Beep

Urgh, my head hurt, and the beeping noise wasn't helping. I moved my hand quickly, attempting to turn off my alarm.

"Oww..." Well, maybe if you weren't making so much noise, I wouldn't have to hurt you.

Wait...my eyes sprung open and I jumped up in bed to find Zach rubbing his face. What was he doing in my room?

Letting my eyes adjust, I quickly scanned the room to find white walls, well white everything really, and in that moment I realised I wasn't in my room; I was in the hospital.

"What happened?" I asked, turning my attention back to Zach who was still rubbing his face, with a pout on his lips.

"I don't really know, coach came running when he heard you scream, and found you laying on the ground in the locker rooms, blood coming from your ears."

My hands darted up to my ears but there was nothing there. I glanced over at Zach who was looking at me with concern, should I tell him about the ringing?

"Adrian! Thank god you're okay." My auntie came rushing towards me, her arms wrapping around me tightly, my uncle followed close behind.

"My poor baby, what happened?" She cooed, her eyes inspecting me to make sure I was okay.

"I'm fine, Auntie June. I'm not quite sure what happened."

"What do you remember?" My uncle asked and I sighed aloud, deciding to just tell them the truth.

"I was in the locker rooms, Zach had just left, and I noticed my necklace glowing in the mirror, the one my mum gave me. I went to touch it, but before I could a high-pitched ringing filled my ears, I tried to block out the noise but I'm pretty sure it was in my head, then I blacked out." I shrugged, trying not to make a big deal about it.

All three of them stared at me in curiosity, as I stared back in confusion.

"The necklace was glowing?" My uncle asked slowly, and I nodded, my fingers reaching up to where the pendant lay.

"Maybe he had a fit?" Aunt June suggested, and at that I lay back and closed my eyes, not ready to hear them spill excuses to distract me from the truth. This was all happening for a reason, I knew that. I just wasn't ready to find out what that reason was.

Somehow, I ended up falling asleep again, but this time there were no dreams. I can't remember the last time I had a dreamless night, it felt good.

My eyes flew open as realization hit me. I do remember the last time I had a dreamless night; it was before I dropped the pendant...

I quickly scanned the room, my aunt and uncle were nowhere to be seen, and Zach lay in the chair beside my bed, asleep. I took the pendant off from around my neck and examined it, it really was beautiful.

A yin yang design, one half a beautiful opal blue, the other gold with flowers with a crystal line running between the two. It was indeed very pretty, but it didn't look all that important. I traced my fingers over the amulet, carefully. Maybe it did something? If it did, did I want to find out what?

I sighed to myself before attaching the pendant back around my neck. Curiosity was the only thing making me want to know, but curiosity killed the cat...

"Satisfaction brought it back." My eyes quickly shot over to Zach to find him still asleep. Okay, that's creepy, that's the second time I've heard his voice inside my head...

I rubbed my eyes, feeling drained, and decided to call it quits for now. I lay back in bed, rolling over to face Zach. My hand slowly trailed to where his lay on the bed. Placing my hand over his, tingles ran through my hand and up my arm, it was a beautiful feeling.

My eyes fell shut again, and soon I was falling back to sleep.

The sound of chatter woke me up next, my eyes slowly lolling open to see my auntie and uncle at the other side of the room talking to a doctor. I glanced to the side to find Zach awake and watching them talk.

Glancing down to our intertwined hands, I couldn't help but smile slightly. I stretched from where I lay, catching Zach's attention.

"How are you feeling?" He whispered, his thumb rubbing circles on my hand.

"Better," I choked out; my voice hoarse from my dry throat.

Zach caught it and reached over to grab the glass of water that sat on the bedside table. He handed the glass to me and I downed it quickly, instantly feeling a hell of a lot better.

"Thank you," I said, handing back the now empty glass.

"Good, you're awake. The doctor said you can go," my uncle spoke, making me smile as I jumped up from the bed, letting go of Zach's hand in the process. I just wanted to get out of this place as fast as possible.

"Woah, babe, be careful." I froze at Zach's words, as did he. I stared at him in shock, along with my aunt and uncle, who also looked concerned.

"Uh-I-I mean..." Zach quickly trailed off, awkwardly scratching the back of his head.

"Come on, let's get out of here!" My aunt intersected, rushing over to me and pulling me out of the room before I could protest.

I trailed beside her silently, Zach and my uncle somewhere behind us. My mind was once again all over the place.

My aunt guided me to the car, where I got into the back seat. The others followed not long after, but my eyes stayed trained out of the window the whole ride home.

Uncle thought it best they dropped Zach off first, so we arrived at his place and he gave a defeated bye before exiting the car. I felt bad for ignoring him, but I really need to clear my head right now.

We finally arrived home and I trekked up the stairs to my room, closing the door behind me and falling face first onto my bed.

Babe

A silent tear rolled down my cheek but I quickly wiped it away, why was I crying? Did I really want to know?

Anger rushed through me then, and before I knew what I was doing, I threw the lamp that sat beside my bed across the room.

That's when I caught my reflection in the mirror, my eyes once again glowing silver, but this time they were different, this time they were darker.

I watched in amazement as my eyes changed back to their normal colour. That was when I decided that I, absolutely, did not want to know.

Pulling out my laptop from under my bed, I decided to distract myself with social media. I found myself browsing through pointless posts for hours. It was only when I finally decided to come off, that I received a message.

From Zach;

I'm sorry.

My heart ached, pain clenching at my chest. I couldn't explain the emotion I was feeling right now, but I didn't like it one bit.

I quickly typed a response, hoping to ease the tightening in my chest.

It's my fault, I overreacted.

I hit send, not really knowing what else to say, and that's when the conversation really picked up.

Zach: You had every reason to react that way.

Adrian: I was more confused than anything, it was still no reason to ignore you like I did.

Zach: I understand why you did, I just don't want you to hate me.

Adrian: I could never hate you.

Zach: I don't think you realise just what you do to me.

Adrian: If I knew, how you do what you do to me, I would do it to you.

Zach: Did you just quote a song?

Adrian: Maybe

Zach: You're a dork.

Adrian: You love me.

Adrian: I mean...

Adrian: Like in a friend way.

Zach: Of course, Adrian.

Adrian: So, why don't you come over tomorrow? My aunt and uncle are running off and since I can't go to Jakes party, I'm going to be bored. We can play video games all day, I could cook...

Zach: Sure, that sounds like fun.

Adrian: Cool, I'll thrash you at Mario Kart again.

Zach: You wish.

Adrian: No need for wishes when you have skills like mine ;)

Zach: We'll see.

Adrian: I guess we will.

We talked for a while longer before we both decided it was time for bed, and even though I pretty much had done nothing but sleep, I was out like a light as soon as my head touched the pillow.

~

I was awoken to the sound of my aunt and uncle running around like elephant's downstairs. I groaned, dragging myself out of bed, before stumbling down the stairs.

Stepping into the kitchen, I find my auntie running around in a crazed state, while my uncle sat at the table, drinking coffee and reading the newspaper. I couldn't help but roll my eyes.

"What are you doing?" I asked my auntie, causing her to stop and look at me for a second before she continued to run around like a headless chicken. I never did get a response, so instead I took a seat next to my uncle at the table and repeated the question to him.

"What is she doing?"

"Freaking out," he responded, not looking up from his newspaper.

"I can see that, but why?"

"We really are going on a business trip, and she can't find the documents she needs."

"Well why don't you help her look?" I asked, wondering why he left her to freak out on her own.

He didn't respond, just moved the briefcase that sat on the table to reveal some documents. I'm assuming the ones she was looking for.

"Uh-why don't you just tell her they're there?" The confusion in my voice was evident as I stared at my uncle who smirked.

"She told me I was bad at my job," was his only response before he got up and walked away. Okay then...

About a half hour later they left, my aunt now refusing to talk to my uncle. They both said their farewells, before they were driving off towards the airport.

I headed back upstairs and took a shower, bathing in the warmth. The temptation to stay in the shower all day was overwhelming, but deciding that probably wasn't the best idea, I climbed out and got dressed.

Going back into my room, I pulled my laptop out from under my bed. I quickly opened Facebook and sent a message to Zach;

What's your number?

I regret not getting it sooner, having to log onto Facebook every time to talk to him was a pain.

He replied quickly enough with a mobile number that I went to save in my phone, but to my surprise and horror, I had his number already saved. What the hell? When did I get his number?

My love <3

My eyes grew wide at what his number was saved under.

My love

My heart pounded against my chest as memories of my dream came flooding back. No, it couldn't be. I quickly pushed down the blush and shut off the laptop, putting it back under my bed.

I headed back downstairs, and poured myself some coffee, before sitting down on the couch in the living room and watching TV. Trying to pay attention to the television had proven to be impossible, as my mind kept wondering back to his name in my phone.

Shaking my head, I decided to distract myself with video games. I did a few random missions before dropping Zach a text asking what time he'll be here, trying my best not to look at the name. Why not just change it?

The blush that filled my cheeks was unsatisfying, I don't know why, but I really didn't want to change it, and that scared me.

Zach replied instantly saying he'll been here in about an hour, so to kill time I played my game some more, losing myself in the adventure.

The doorbell rang an hour later, and I found myself feeling nervous, I tried to push the feeling away but to no avail.

So instead, I took my time getting to the door, giving myself extra seconds to calm down, and trying not to seem too desperate, but I really wanted to see him.

"Hey," I greeted as I opened the door, Zach standing in front of me, looking breathtakingly gorgeous.

"Hi," he returned my greeting with a breath-taking smile on his face, I had to stop using that word, but god damn was he breath-taking.

I leant forward instinctively, my lips moving to hover over his before I realised what I was doing. I quickly jumped back, Zach staring at me with wide eyes. What the hell was that? I asked myself, internally freaking out.

"I'm so sorry, I-I don't know what the hell just happened," I quickly explained, my heart beating a mile a minute.

I was expecting Zach to freak out, to turn around and leave, or to ask me what the hell I was doing, but instead he just gave me a curious look before entering the house and closing the door behind him.

He didn't say a word as he made his way over to the couch and sat down, getting comfortable. He was acting like nothing happened, and I guess for that I should be grateful.

"So, what are we playing?"

My heartstrings.
