CHAPTER 6

WES

            How I made it to Kate’s party dressed in a light blue dress shirt and black pants, I have no idea, but I was there. Kate opened the door for me a few minutes after knocking and I could smell the weed from her front door. “Thanks for coming!” She squeaked, obviously already tipsy.

“Sure thing.” I gave her a tight smile.

“Lily’s in the kitchen if you’re wondering and Luke’s not coming tonight because of some national honors society meeting.” Kate winked and opened the door wider. I followed her through the huge house until we got to a big family room where there was no furniture and people from my school crowded the dance floor. “I think you can find your way from here.” She kissed my cheek and let some nasty junior sweep her onto the dance floor.

I made my way along the side of the crowd and through a wide open door on the left. The room smelled like cookies and I saw Lily there, in an apron, taking a cookie sheet out of the oven. “What are you doing? I didn’t know you were making the food for tonight or I would’ve eaten before I got here.” I smirked.

Lily rolled her eyes. “I’m not, just these because Kate asked me too. I’m famous for my homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.” She paused, grabbing a cooled cookie and tossed it to me. “Try one, you won’t regret it.”

“You didn’t poison this right?” I joked.

Lily threw her apron on the counter and I noticed her small dress that sparkled with every movement. “Now why would I do that?” She smiled tightly.

I stepped towards her so that her face was right below mine and took a bite of it. It immediately melted in my mouth and I ate the entire thing in one gulp. “Mmmm.” I tilted my head in towards her and she reached up to meet me. Her lips were centimeters from mine so I opened my mouth and spit out the cookie pieces that I hadn’t swallowed. She screamed and stepped back.

“You nasty little-!” She yelled and wiped her lips. But it was a game now and she was smiling playfully.

I laughed and ruffled one hand absentmindedly through my hair. “See you around the party Lilypad.” She glared at me with those bright blue eyes and I left the room, still laughing.

Hours passed and I had done nothing but stood along the side talking to no one and watching girls dance. Most were girls I didn’t know but some I recognized like Ari. She was up against someone short and young and I laughed bitterly to myself.

Something in the corner caught my eye and it was Lily, standing and watching the same view. She caught my gaze and walked over to me. “How’s it going?” She asked, leaning against the same wall as me.

“I’m bored.” I answered flatly.

“Me too.” She agreed.

“Then why don’t you leave?” I asked turning toward her.

“I haven’t even danced yet! I’m not a party pooper.” She huffed and crossed her long, tan arms across her chest.

I held out my hand for her to take. I doubted she would dance with me but it was better than standing alone. “Come on, I’ll dance with you.” I rolled my eyes.

She eyed me up. “No funny business.” Lily pointed her pointer finger at me.

“I won’t, I promise. Why would I anyways, your boyfriend is not even here to make jealous.” Her eyes turned dark when I said that she looked angry. I had a feeling that she was going to make me pay. She took my hand and led me through the crows until we were lost in the sea of people.

The music was fast. This wasn’t a time for slow dancing. Lily smiled at me and in a minute we were both swaying our hips like everyone else in the room, just a little more classy. Lily closed the space between us and I smiled thoughtfully. Luke wasn’t here, we’d both drunk, and the smell of smoke was blurring our minds; this was going to be an interesting night. The song changed to something slow in the next minute and lots of people cleared the dance floor. Lily looked at me uncertainly as if she wasn’t sure if she should dance with me or not. Before she could refuse I grabbed her waist and pulled her into me. She wrapped her long arms around my neck and leaned her head against my shoulder. “Good thing your dumbass boyfriend isn’t here or I don’t think he’d this very much.” I said hatefully. Lily leaned back and looked at me.

“Shut up Wes, you’re ruining it.” She scolded but I could see a light in her blue eyes.

I just laughed and she leaned her head against my shoulder again. All was good. But I hadn’t forgotten what she’d done to that day not too long ago in her bedroom. She had used my feelings and I wouldn’t let her get away with it.

~~~
No lights were on when I got to Lily’s house but I didn’t expect to see her mom home yet since she was with Lily’s father. “How’s your grandmother doing?” I asked, opening up the car door for her. Lily tumbled out and unsteadily walked next to me. She was drunk. I hadn’t had much to drink, only a beer. I had gotten good at restraining myself especially when I knew that I had to drive someone home.
“I don’t know.’ Her voice was high and unusually whiney. I rolled my eyes and grabbed her elbow to help her up the steps.
“Don’t touch me sexy.” She squealed. Oh my gosh I had never seen anyone this drunk before. She had had at least three beers, four shots, and a mimosa.  She looked at me with an expression that I had only seen once before, a few days earlier when she used me. Lily looked back down and fumbled through her purse until pulling out a tube of lipstick to open the door. “It’s not working!” She yelled.
“It’s your lipstick Lily. It’s not going to work.”
“Ugh….” She finally found her keys and opened the door. She left the door hanging open after walking inside. “Are you coming to tuck me in?” She giggled. Before I could say no she grabbed me and pulled me inside. Her hand was grasped firmly around my wrist as she led me upstairs. Once inside her extremely large room she went into the bathroom and shut the door. I assumed she was brushing her teeth or something. I sat in her chair at a mahogany desk in the corner of her room. She came back in a minute dressed in pajama shorts and an oversized t-shirt.
“Luke’s never seen me in my pajamas before. He doesn’t want to lose his virginity before he’s married so he tries not to tempt himself.” She sighed and got onto her bed. “Why does my head hurt so-?” But she couldn’t finish her sentence. She leaned over the side of her bed and threw up.
            I ran to her side and saw that she had thrown up on the floor. I grabbed her trashcan by the door and held it under her mouth in case she was going to threw up again. She didn’t though and I was thankful for it. Finally, after twenty minutes she leaned her head back and snuggled under the covers. I looked at her but her eyes were closed. I smiled. “Wes, please stay. I don’t want to be alone.” She mumbled and patted the spot next to her on the bed.
            Instead I grabbed her chair and moved it beside her bed. “Can I tell you a secret?” Lily turned to me. I could tell she was still hazed over with alcohol by the look in her eyes.
            “Sure.” I answered with a crooked grin. What was I doing here? This wasn’t part of the plan! I needed to leave.
            “I really want to kiss you. You’re very attractive.” She giggled and thought about what she just said.
            “And you’re very drunk. You need to sleep; you’ll feel better in the morning.”
            “Do you promise?” She asked.
            “Promise what?” I answered with a question.
            “Do you promise to be here when I wake up?” She looked at me with a questioning glance and her eyes were starting to droop.
            “Go to sleep Lilypad.” I said sternly. I couldn’t make a promise that I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep.
            “Promise me Wes! I don’t want to be alone!” Her voice rose and she sat up, facing towards me.
            “I promise.”
            She lay back down and closed her eyes. Those beautiful blue eyes weren’t there anymore. Minutes passed and as soon as I could hear her breathing come to a slow pace and become even, I left, breaking my promise.
