Chapter Six

My heart began to race and my eyes widened dramatically as Gabriel casually got up from the sofa and took a step closer to me.

I instinctively took a step back and glanced around for anything I could use to defend myself. My eyes fell on the hot chocolate I had place down just seconds, I lunged for it and held it tightly in my grasp.

“D-don’t come any closer.” I threatened holding the cup higher so he could see.

His eyes fell on the cup I was holding and he held up his hands giving looking amused. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

“How did you get in my house? Wait how do you even know where I live?” I asked feeling horrified, he knew where I lived, how did he even find out? He knew nothing about me, not even my last name.

“Calm down, put the mug down. You’ll burn yourself.” He said slowly and calmly. I didn’t even notice that my body was trembling and the hot chocolate was slightly spilling onto my shoes and the carpet.

I watched his hesitantly for a few seconds before I put the mug on the table. “Y-you broke in to my house. How do you know where I live?”

“I have my ways.” He stated before motioning for me to sit down on the sofa.

I shook my head, there was no way I’m voluntarily going any closer to the man who had just broken into my house. “What ways?” I pressed wanting an answer.

“You should sit down, you look exhausted.” He said completely ignoring my question.

“Answer me, how did you find out where I lived?” I yelled at him, it was scaring me how he easily found out where I lived in a few hours and with him not telling me how I felt even more petrified.

“How did you get my number?” He fired back looking more amused than annoyed.

“I-that’s not even important. What you did is way creepier!” I defended myself, but in truth I had no idea how Leah managed to get the number. Every time I would ask she would just wink and say ‘you’re welcome.’

“Unlike your friend I didn’t kiss a receptionist, lock him in the back room and go through customer records. I simply asked.”

My mouth flew open when he said that. Leah did what?!

“Judging by that horrified look on your face, I’m assuming you didn’t know your little friend did that?”

I gaped at him not knowing what to say. He was right I had no idea that’s what she did. I just assumed she managed to sweet talk him into giving the number.

“No, wait they’re not going to press charges are they?” I asked him, hoping he would say no. Hotels have cameras everywhere they could easily identify her. I’m sure what she did was illegal. I couldn’t let her get into trouble because of me. She was only trying to help me.

“I took care of it.”

I let out a sigh of relief, she wasn’t going to get in any trouble. But I am going to kill her when she gets home.

“Your license plate.”

“What?”

“I took down your license plate, and tracked down your address. Now that that’s been cleared, we have more important issues to discuss.” He sat down on the sofa and looked over at me.

“You can’t do that! Well not legally anyway!”

He raised one of his eyebrows. “Your friend didn’t get my number legally.”

I glared at him wanting to smack that smug look off his face. I dropped it knowing if I said anything or tried to do anything he could always bring up what Leah did and get her in trouble.

“Fine, but that doesn’t change the fact that you broke into my house.” If I was being honest I had kind of forgotten about that, my mind was on how he found out where I lived.

“I got bored of waiting outside.” He said slowly as if it was the most obvious thing.

“So you decided to break in and sit in the dark instead?” I asked sceptically.

He shrugged making me frown at him. Great, he’s definitely crazy. Just my luck. I eyed him warily as I walked over to the sofa and sat down slowly, leaving a huge space between us. I was getting a little tired of standing up.

“You’re having my child.” He stated, his voice completely serious as his eyes focused on my stomach.

“Why do you believe me now?” I asked feeling a little uncomfortable with the way he was staring at my stomach.

He inhaled deeply. “Because I know you’re not lying.”

“How?” I questioned wanting to know what changed his mind. A few hours ago he didn’t believe me.

He didn’t answer instead he strolled across the room and picked up my forgotten mug of hot chocolate. He walked back and placed it into my hands without a word.

“Erm, thanks.” I muttered not knowing what else to say.

“You’re tired, you should get some rest.” He told me, his eyes flickering from my face to my stomach. “You’ve got a doctor’s appointment tomorrow at 1pm. I’ll pick you up.”

I shook my head. “I didn’t make an appointment.”

“I did. I’ll pick you up at 12:45 sharp.” He said, his voice suggesting that he wouldn’t change his mind no matter what I said.

“I have class and then I have..-”

“12:45. Go get some rest.” He told me before walking out of the room.

“Wait.” I yelled getting off the sofa. I had taken about four steps when I heard the front door slam shut. Wow, he was fast.

I was a little annoyed that he had booked an appointment without telling me and then expecting me to attend it. How did he even manage to book an appointment so quickly? When I tried booking mine I had to wait for over a week for a quick check up.

Instead of going to sleep I decided to wait up for Leah, she would be back in a couple of hours. To pass the time I reheated the hot chocolate and began catching up on Pretty Little Liars. The new season hasn’t premiered in the UK yet so instead I was stuck watching it on my laptop.

I was halfway through episode 3 well I heard Leah come in. “What are you doing up? You should be sleeping.”

“Did you manage to finish the assignment on time?” I asked ignoring what she said.

“Yep! I submitted it at 8:57. With three minutes to spare.” She boasted as she came back from the kitchen and joined me in the living room.

I shook my head, I honestly had no idea how she could complete a full essay in a few hours and get respectable grades. It takes me days just to think of an introduction, the full essay usually takes me a week or two. Even longer if it’s a lab report.

“So.” I started, shutting my laptop. “How did you get Gabriel’s number again?”

“Does it matter?” She asked, putting her feet up.

“Yes! Of course it does. The hotels have security cameras, you do know that right?”

“Yep.”

“Yep? That’s all you can say?” I questioned her, feeling annoyed that she didn’t think what she did was serious.

“What do you want me to say?” She asked slowly, raising her eyebrows.

“I had a very interesting conversation with someone about how you got that number.”

“Uh-oh.” She muttered under her breath.

“Yeah, uh-oh. What were you thinking? You said you didn’t do anything illegal!”

“Compared to the other stuff I’ve done, I hardly call that illegal. How did you even find out?” She shrugged before looking at me questionably.

“They can press charges! Wait what other stuff?”

“How did you find out?” She repeated sounding curious.

“Gabriel told me.” I said quietly.

“Gabriel? As in your baby daddy Gabriel?” She questioned not bothering to hide her excitement.

“How many other Gabriels do we know?” I muttered.

Leah let out a squeal and clutched my upper arm. “Tell me everything.”

“Can you stop pacing in circles? You’re making me dizzy.” Leah groaned emphasising the word ‘me.’

I paused and glanced at her. “I can’t help it I’m nervous.”

“Well, be nervous while you sit, stop walking so much.”

I sat down beside her for a few seconds before standing back up again. “I can’t. I’m too nervous.”

Leah groaned but didn’t say another word as I kept pacing and checking the time. The silence was broken after a few minutes by three knocks on the door.

“I’ll get it.” Leah yelled before skipping away.

I began to take deep breaths to calm my nerves. I could hear them exchange words but I was too busy concentrating on not panicking than listening to what they were saying.

I slowly walked over to the front door and met Gabriel’s eyes. “Are you ready?”

I nodded my throat feeling very dry all of a sudden. I gave Leah a small smile as I slipped past her and walked towards Gabriel.

“Oh Gabriel?” Leah called out, making both Gabriel and I face her.

“If you hurt my friend in any way, I will kick you on your balls extremely hard. So hard that, the baby she’s carrying will be your only child. Capisce?”

I gasped in shock while Gabriel raised an eyebrow and smiled in amusement.

“Bye Nina!” She shouted before slamming the door in our face.

“Your little friend is strange.” Gabriel muttered as we walked towards his car.

I shrugged but didn’t say anything. When we reached his car, he quickly walked over to the passenger’s side and opened the door for me before I could.

Thanking him quietly I slid into the dark Mercedes and put my seatbelt on while he walked around the car and got in the driver’s side. We drove to the hospital in silence neither of us bothering to start a conversation.

We walked into the hospital in silence and also sat in the waiting room in silence. The silence was a little awkward but I knew it would be worse if we both attempted to talk to each other.

“Nina Michaels.”

Gabriel stood up quickly and looked over at me expectantly. I got up and we slowly walked over to the nurse who called my name. Dr Lane gave both Gabriel and I a warm smile when she saw us.

“Hello Nina, it’s good to see you again.”

“Hi.” I muttered back as I sat down on one of the chairs.

She turned to face Gabriel. “You must be the father?” She asked, stretching out her hand.

“Yes. Gabriel Drakos.”

Like the first time Dr Lane did a few test and asked me a few questions. She seemed a little more hesitant this time, probably being more careful so I don’t run out again like a crazy person.

“Okay Nina, do you want to hop on to the bed and we’ll try and find your baby’s heartbeat?” She asked cautiously, holding the Doppler in her hand.

I nodded and laid down on the bed slowly. I looked over at Gabriel who inched closer, his eyes on my exposed stomach.

“The gel will be a little cold.” Dr Lane said as she squirted it onto my stomach. I shuddered slightly but didn’t say anything as she started to move the Doppler over my lower abdomen. It didn’t hurt but it was slightly uncomfortable as she pressed it into my skin.

A minute later, we heard a sound. A fast little heartbeat filled the silent room. I gasped as I heard it, it was…amazing. I could feel the tears building up in my eyes as I glanced over at Gabriel.

Gabriel looked stunned, he was looking at my stomach in awe. Once he noticed my stare his face became blank and he gave me a small smile.

Hearing the heartbeat made the baby seem so real. A baby. My baby.

“The baby is perfectly healthy.” Dr Lane told us as she turned off the Doppler and wiped the gel off me.

I sat up and Dr Lane asked a few more questions and then scheduled another appointment in three weeks time for the routine 12 week ultrasound.

I sighed deeply and leaned against the headrest of the car. “That was incredible.” I muttered peeking over at Gabriel who nodded.

“How old are you?” I blurted out suddenly making Gabriel take his eyes off the road and glanced my way. It was embarrassing to not know anything about the father of the child other than his name.

“How old do I look?” He asked instead of answering my question.

I tilted my head and observed him. “Hmm I would say in your late twenties.” I hoped he was in his 20’s I don’t know what I’d do if he was over 30. That age gap was too much for me.

He nodded. “Sure, I’m in my late twenties.”

I laughed, shaking my head at him. “A specific number would be better.”

He was silent for a minute before he looked over at me. “27.”

Twenty seven, that wasn’t too bad. He was six years older than me, it was more than I thought but at least it wasn’t too much.

None of us spoke again for the next few minutes and I closed my eyes for few seconds before I looked out the window.

I blinked and then leaned closer to the window. “Hey, you’re going the wrong way. You should have taken the first exit off the roundabout.”

Gabriel didn’t answer and I turned to face him. He kept his eyes on the road and kept driving.

“Gabriel, you’re going the wrong way.”

The only answer I got was the sound of the doors locking.

Gabriel finally turned and faced me, his jaws clenched and his eyes looked black.

“You’re not going home.”
