The team had resorted to writing on a notepad and passing it to the Unsub so he could read then reply. It was a highly inefficient negotiation system.
"Hurry up, y/n," Prentiss muttered.
Suddenly Reid's phone rang.
"Hey, Garcia. Is y/n with you? We need her r-"
"Reid I am so sorry!" Garcia sobbed. "I- I don't know what happened I- I was looking and I guess that he wasn't and I- I thought I- I- I-" Garcia began hyperventilating.
"Garcia! What. Happened. Where are you?"
"About a mile from you. St. Jude hospital."
Reid's stomach dropped.
"I give you the right to hate me for eternity and never to forgive me and want me dead and-" Garcia could feel Reid's grimace.
"Was she with you?"
Garcia took a deep breath before replying.
Reid hung up and threw his phone before collapsing onto his knees and balling.
"Reid. What happened? Where's y/n?" Hotch asked.
Reid told the team what he knew between sobs and gasps for air. When he finished, Morgan picked Reid up and put him in the backseat of one of the SUVs. Morgan then looked back at the three other BAU members. "You got this, right? He's in no condition to drive and-"
The three members nodded and Morgan drove Reid to the hospital.

"Alright kid. Now you need to go in there and be strong for her, okay? It's okay to cry. It's okay to be scared. But you need to let her know that you're there for her and that you're gonna help her through this, got it?"
Reid vaguely nodded.
"Alright good."
The two men walked into the emergency room and found Garcia sitting in the corner and crying. Reid stiffened upon seeing her.
"Hey hey. None of that. You know this isn't her fault."
"But it is! If she'd been paying better attention this wouldn't have happened! She's the reason-"
"Shh shh shh! Hey! Cool it! You're not thinking straight. You're in shock and grieving, I get it. That normal. But don't act on it!"
"Don't profile me, Derek." Reid stormed off and sat down as far from Garcia as he could.
"Reid I am s-"
"Don't baby girl," Morgan warned.
"Okay but," Garcia looked at Reid again, "I just-"
"Hey, Garcia?" Reid interjected. "Why don't you listen to Morgan? In fact, why don't you just go home? You've done enough today."
Garcia began to cry.
"Reid! That was uncalled for!" Morgan embraced Garcia and whispered to her, "he doesn't mean it mama. He's in distress."
Garcia quivered some more. "Sh- should I I- leave h- her? H- he wants m- me t- to."
"I think you need to take some time away from the situation. I'll take you to the hotel, okay?"
"N- no. I- it will look like I- I didn't w- want to face her. She'll th- think-"
"No she won't. Come with me, baby girl." Morgan took Garcia's hand and led her out of the ER. "Call us when you hear anything, okay?"
Reid nodded.

"Dr. Spencer Reid?" a woman asked. "A woman with rainbow hair said you'd be waiting for Miss y/n y/l/n?"
"Yes. That me. Is she alright??"
"Yes. Miss y/l/n is fine, as is her baby girl."
Reid stopped breathing. He'd forgotten for a moment about their baby.
"C- can I see them?"
"You can see y/n right now, but she might be asleep for a while. The baby is in the NICU at the moment. Are you in contact with the father?"
"I- I'm the father."
"Oh! Sorry." The nurse blushed. "y/n is in room 201, which is-"
"Thank you!" Reid shouted, running down the hall to find his girlfriend.
When Reid saw y/n he almost fainted. She had a thin tube in her nose, bandages on her head and left forearm, and a cast on her right arm and leg. She also had small cuts all over her body.
Reid sat down next to her and brushed back some of her hair. "Hey, beautiful. I'm sorry that this happened. I should have protected you. I- I should have been there. I shouldn't have-" Reid stopped and cried. He took a few deep breaths and started over. "It's a girl. We have a baby girl. I haven't met her yet, but I'm sure she's just as beautiful and intelligent as you."
Reid fell asleep in the chair next to y/n's bed. He was woken up by a doctor.
"Hi, Spencer? I'm Dr. Shi. Your daughter is doing phenomenally. If she keeps her progress she'll be going home with you at the end of the week or early next."
"Okay. Thank you."
"Would you like to meet her?"

When y/n woke up she saw Reid holding their daughter.
"Hi."
"y/n/n!" Reid whispered.
"Can I see our baby?"
Reid nodded, tears streaming down his face. He moved closer to y/n, tilting their daughter slightly.
"Hi there!" y/n whispered.
"This is your mama. She's very brave and strong and stubborn sometimes."
"What's the sex?"
"Female."
Y/n let out a small sigh of relief. "A girl," she smiled. "Any names in mind?"
"I like the sound of Amber," Reid admitted.
"Amber Max Reid. That's not too shabby," y/n laughed.
"What about your last name?"
"Well, I was hoping it could be Reid too."
Reid smiled broadly.
"You'll have to forgive the lack of ambiance, but Spencer Reid, will you marry me?"
Through tears, Reid managed to say, "It would be my honor."
