ON NOVEMBER 6, 1985,
jane ives and michael wheeler
committed what the police call a double
suicide. the police speculate that they
were lovers whom were obsessed with
suicide ideation and the fatally tragic tale
of romeo and juliet.
the medical examiner states the cause of
death was a single gunshot wound to the
head by a .45-caliber handgun, resulting in
instantaneous death for both partners. "it
was a painless death," m.e. aubrey
rosewood continues.
jane ives is believed to be the dominant
partner in the double suicide, forcing
wheeler to participate in killing himself.
though not entirely obsessed with suicide,
wheeler did possess some suicidal
ideology.
jane ives suffered active suicidal
ideation while wheeler had passive
ideation. active ideation involves
an existing wish to die along with
a plan in which to carry out the
death. passive ideation is where
there is a wish to die, but no plan
has been made.
their deaths have rocked the town
causing an enormous loss and "rip in the
community," as stated by wheeler's friend,
lucas sinclair. "we're going to miss them
a lot," maxine clarke says. her eyes are
laden with unshed tears which pull at our
heartstrings. most of wheeler's and ives'
friends overlapped. they have expressed
their condolences but requested to stay
anonymous for safety reasons.
despite the deaths, hawkins hopes to
move on and fund a memorial for ives
and wheeler. chief hopper tells us that
the town can expect "a new park,
library or classroom or something
of that idea. the two both loved to learn,
and i know that hawkins would best honour
them through the things they loved."
though nothing will ever be the same
again, with the disappearance and
probable kidnapping of will byers in 1983,
and the murder-suicide, as the police
have dubbed it, occurring in 1985,
a mere two years after the kidnapping,
hawkins will surely recover.
