D. Gray Man—Chapter Eighteen
“You can't keep me here!" I screamed at Komui. I don't know why I was screaming. My voice just suddenly got higher and louder. I know that it isn't completely Koumi's fault that I'm here, but I just needed someone to yell at. "You can't keep me here, in this stupid asylum! You have no right to do that! I'll quit as an exorcist if you keep me here." I threatened.
But he didn't look worried. His eyes looked like they were somewhere else. In another universe. When he spoke up, I was surprised that it wasn't an outer space alien voice. "Akira-chan. I'm sorry to say that you can't quit as an exorcist." Of course I can. I don't need this job. In fact, this isn't even exactly a job. They don't pay me. All they do is give me a place to live and some delicious food to feed me.
"The only reason I'm here is because I wanted to stay with Allen nii-san. I mean, I did want to work as an exorcist. But if being one means that I have to stay in an asylum, then I'm quitting. My job is to destroy akumas. Not be an patient at a hospital."
"Exactly. You're job is to destroy akumas. Except you can't be near them without feeling sick. That's why you're here. You moron." The new voice startled me. I looked up to see Kanda, with his usual scowl on his face. Well, what he said just now was quite mean. But if he suddenly started to be nice to me, I'd be pretty freaked out.
"Go away, Kanda. No one likes you." I said to him, pissed off. This was not the time for some Kanda moods.
"I like Kanda-san!" I've only heard this voice once before. But when it meet my poor ears, I immediately knew who it belonged to. Saki. She hopped into the room with a grin on her face. Wow, she actually looked nice today. Her smile was genuine. Maybe she's happy that I'm in an asylum...But she didn't look like she was gloating and happy about someone else's unfortunate.
Now that I look at her more clearly, she was beautiful. Without that fake smile of hers, she looked stunning. And her hair was in big curls today. It suited her wonderfully. It's scary how different she can look with a real smile.
"Okay, Kanda lovers, go over there." I said pointing to a random corner. "And Kanda haters, come stand by me." Saki hopped to the corner I was pointing at. Komui got up and hopped over to the corner too. I stared at him with wide eyes. Is he for real? "T-traitor!" I accused.
Kanda smacked him in the head. Komui's reaction was instantaneous. Tears streamed down his face rapidly. "Kanda-kun's a big meanie!!!" He whined. Oh Gosh. This is one of the most irritating things that could ever possibly be possible. Actually...they're might be more annoying things.
But I smiled, anyway. They always manage to take my mind off things. I don't understand what Komui meant when he said that I couldn't leave the Order. But I'll worry about that later. "Fine! It's piss Akira-off Day, isn't it? And why the heck are you here?"
He held up a container, like it explained everything. I waited for him to elaborate. But he stayed silent. I bet he thinks he's so cool by staying quiet all the time. And when he does talk, all it does is either scare the living animals out of everyone or, in my case, annoy the poop into me.
Wait...what? That didn't make any sense. Oh, well, most things in my mind don't make sense. I get distracted to easily. "Okay, Mr. Silent, care to elaborate?" I asked, exasperated.
"You idiot. It's food." For me? I narrowed my eyes are him. If he brought it, I bet it's poisoned. Yes, he must've poisoned it. He would never do something this kind for people. Especially not me.
"What did you put in it??? Needles?! Instant death poison?! Or a slow painful death??!"
"I--" He started.
"No!!!!" I covered my ears, "Don't lie!" His scowl deepened. And he said something. But I couldn't hear him. But I'm guessing it was something along the lines of, 'I want to slice you up.' But it's fine. 'Cuz that's just how Little Kanda shows affection. I smiled at him. His teeth clenched together tightly. Wow, he looks piisssed. My grin just got bigger. I could feel the anger seething from his little puny brain. Okay, that made no sense.
I removed my hands from my ears and picked up some chopsticks. I should eat this now, if it's poisoned, Kanda will go to prison. And die without any friends and rabbits. Yes, he'll die without friends and rabbits and turtles...
Wait, what was I thinking about again?!
I picked up some the side dishes and stuffed it in my mouth.
"Are you not afraid of the poison I put in there?" Kanda asked sharply.
I shrugged, "I am. But I'm more afraid of dying of starvation. Worst way to die."
"Che."
"Did Lenalee-chan tell you to bring it?" I asked with my mouth half-closed. I didn't want food everywhere. Gosh, this stuff is good. I stuffed another chopstick full of rice into my mouth. Yum. Maybe this isn’t poisoned. Yeah, think positive.
He didn’t answer the question. But Saki did. When she spoke, I thought it would be like last time. But instead, it was cheerful and sweet. “Lenalee-chan told Kanda-san to bring it. And I just thought I would come along too. Since I had nothing else to do.” What the heck is wrong with this girl? Last time, it seemed like she was ready to slice me into little pieces. But this time…she seems like a total different person. Everything about her.
Komui must’ve seen my confused face, ‘cuz he sent a reassuring smile my way. I’ll ask him about it later.
I nodded to indicate that I had heard her. I ate my food silently after that. Kanda left with his usual grumpy face on. And Saki skipped off following him. By then, I had already finished more than 3 quarters of the food.
I waited of Komui to explain about Saki, and her weird change in behavior. Finally, when I stuffed the last bit of rice into my mouth, he started to explain.
"Well, Saki-chan, her Innocence is quite special. Just like Rose-chan's."
"What's her Innocence?"
"She has different sides to her personality." Well, that explains the weird change in personality. "Her changes in personality is complete random. There isn't an pattern. But when she activates her Innocence, she'll be a full-out fighter. Quite scary and skilled."
I nodded. "So...she remembers what happens all the time, right? She doesn't like, forget what happens when she's in one personality, right?" Hopefully not.
He shook his head, "She's in control of her mind and body at all times. It's just that she doesn't know when her personality changes."
"Wait, I understand that her personality changes and all, but what does that have to do with her Innocence?"
"The Innocence causes her to have different sides."
"Okay...I'll pretend that I understood what you just explained to me." I tilted my head, "What does she fight with?"
Komui's face formed a creepist smile, "She doesn't have a separate weapon. She fights with her body. It's like Allen-kun, except it doesn't activate into a weapons like that. She's also like Rose-chan, she directly uses her body to attack akumas. Rose-chan uses her hands, right? But Saki-chan can use any part of her body to destroy an akuma. And of course, her personality changes in battle."
"Ah..." That kinda makes sense?
"Saki-chan's very skilled. She has natural talent in fighting. When we found her, she was only seven years old. But she learnt super fast. Soon, she was able to rip Level Twos apart like they were nothing but paper. And that was when she was eight." She sounds scary when she's fighting...
I gave a nervous laugh, "And how old is she right now?"
Komui smiled that creepy smile again. It was like he was enjoying the fact that he was scaring the shiz out of me. "Saki-chan is eighteen right now."
E-eighteen?! "So...that means it's been ten years since she was able to rip Level Two akumas apart like they were paper. Um, so, what can she do to Level Fours then?"
His creepist smile got wider, "You're going to have to find that out yourself, Akira-chan." Oh gosh. I don't really think I want to find out.
"Akira-chan, I have to go back to the Order now. T-there's lots of paperwork I need to sign..." He sighed dramatically. And then ran out the white door crying. I sighed too. What the heck is wrong with that dude? Many, many things.
Wait a minute...what am I going to do?! Stay in this stupid room? I'll wait until someone else from the Order comes, and then I'll try and leave with them. I don't want to blast my way through the whole asylum when I could just leave peacefully without anyone getting hurt. Let's hope they let me out of here. If they don't, I might go crazy. I laughed out loud, the sound was hollow though. Getting sent to an asylum when you're not crazy, and then turn insane because of the asylum.
That's funny.
I frowned. What the heck am I thinking?? I need to go outside and get some fresh air.
Just as I stepped outside the colorless room, purple eyes flashed into my memory.
They were the same eyes from the dream.
