                Chapter Forty four

Sirius took a deep breath as he walked up to where Arianna was. He looked across the lake to check if Polaris was still there, but she was gone. He took another breath and took a step forward to get a clearer view of Arianna who was sitting by the lake’s edge, hugging her knees and just staring blankly at the lake.

“Hey…” he said quietly as he stood by her, Arianna looked up at him and then looked away quickly. “Do you mind if I sit next to you?”

                She didn’t respond

“Right….” Sirius said awkwardly “I’ll take that as a yes anyway.” He then sat next to her; she still didn’t look at him, and just continued staring at the lake. They were silent for what seemed like forever to Sirius, there was nothing but the sound of the wind and the other elements of nature.

“Look, can we talk?” Sirius said eventually, trying to break the tension “I know you aren’t going to listen and you’re just gonna walk out but could you just listen to me explain?”

Arianna still didn’t talk, Sirius ignored this.

“What you saw that night, it’s not what you think I was gonna pick you up at the library but then I ran into Jessica and then she started annoying me and she just – you already know – and then you walked in and thought wrong and well yeah….”

                Silence.

“Arianna, I’m sorry…” Sirius said pleadingly, staring at her. Still she didn’t talk. “Say something. Anything.”

                More silence.

                “I’m sorry. C’mon say something.”

There was even more silence, Sirius personally thought it was starting to get pointless but that was when she spoke.

“I… don’t know what to say….” She said quietly, Sirius just stared at her. “But I guess… I’m sorry too…” Sirius smiled

“So are we good?” he asked, Arianna shrugged

“I guess….” She mumbled at that she then got up, Sirius looked at her confusedly and got up too

“Wait, where are you going?” he asked, as she started walking away. Sirius followed her easily

“I don’t know… back to my dorm or whatever….” She said, Sirius sighed

“You don’t believe me, do you?” he said grabbing her by the arm, making her stop walking. He pulled her by the shoulders so she could face him, she didn’t even look at him

                “I’m just…. Confused…” she mumbled, Sirius sighed

“Why are you always making this hard…” he said

“Why do you even try then?” Arianna shot, glaring at him.

                “Because I love you….”

Arianna fell silent. The two of them just stared at each other, Sirius took a deep breath.

“I love you. That’s why I bother to try.”

Arianna just shook her head and broke away from Sirius’ grip, she then started walking away, Sirius rolled his eyes and followed her again, grabbed her arm and stopping her yet again. Sirius was about to say some more but Arianna beat him to it,

“Fine, I love you too. Happy?”

                Sirius couldn’t help but grin

“So, I take it that we’re good now?”

                “Yeah, I guess… I don’t know….”

Sirius laughed and hugged her tightly, Arianna couldn’t help but smile herself she hid it of course.

“Let go off me, I still haven’t forgiven you completely, you know!!!” Arianna said, as she tried getting away from Sirius’ grip; she also tried using her “stern” voice but that didn’t work because her laughing blew her off. “I hate you Sirius.” She said as she laughed, Sirius just laughed too

“Just a few moments ago you said you love me, and now you hate me?” Sirius said in a mocking voice “Your bipolar nerves are acting up again.” Arianna laughed

“Shut up.” She said, Sirius laughed and kissed her forehead

                “Aww, I love you too.”
