Chapter One

Giselle

I snuggled closer to the sheets all around me, enjoying the warmth the comforter provided. This was one cold morning and I can stay in here all day, cuddled inside the comfy bed. I shut my eyes tighter as I deciphered a bright ray of light beaming through the windows. I tucked my head under my blanket and blocked the light from reaching my eyes. I sighed, enjoying the coziness my bed offered. But then, all of a sudden, my sleep was disturbed when my phone started playing the music of ‘Price Tag by Jessie J’ that began from a low volume until it gradually got louder. Allowing a groan to escape my lips, I ducked my head under my pillow and outreached for my phone on the bedside table. I hit the snooze button without even looking and felt myself drop back to sleep.

Who was responsible for setting the alarm at this time in the morning? It’s weekend for goodness sake! No classes intended today. Mentally cussing the person to blame, I allowed myself to drift off to my dreamland for the hundredth time of the day.

“Elle! Elle, wake up.” someone harshly shook my shoulders, calling me by my nickname. I flicked my wrists dismissively at the utterly familiar voice and grunted in frustration. I’m a lazy butt especially in the morning… I hate getting out of bed until about twelve o’ clock when the sun’s high up in the sky.

“Go away.” I muttered… my voice came out groggy and muffled since I had my head tucked under the pillow.

“Come on! You said we’re gonna go out to celebrate” she whined, incessantly tugging on my left arm. That alerted me. I promised my best friend Shinaira that we will go out early in the morning to celebrate her birthday. I don’t break promises, but I always lost track of time.

I sat up straight, causing the pillow above my head to be thrown off onto the ground. “Was that today?” I asked, my eyes half closed. She pouted at me, her puppy dog eyes even getting worse. I sighed wearily, “Fine” I said, rubbing my eyes while yawning.

Getting up from my bed, I felt a sudden weight jumping on top of me, causing me to stumble over and fall back to bed. Allowing a small shriek to escape my lips, I looked up to see Shinaira giggling while sitting on top of me. I preferred calling her Sin because she doesn’t like being called by her full name.

“Thanks Elle! And I have a surprise for ya!” She laughed, engulfing me into a bear hug. Oh no! There comes the nickname again!

Feeling my eyes lit up at her choice of words, I hugged her back. “What is it Sin?”

She gave me her ‘we-are-going-to-get-in trouble’ smile as she jumped off me. “Not yet Elle, I will tell... well show ya when we are done with the shopping.” A small smile broke onto her face.

However, her nose scrunched up at the word shopping, she hates shopping as much as she hates school—we are quite similar if you would say.

I laughed at her face while I flipped off my bed and grabbed my clothes for the day. A blood red tank top that fitted my body like a glove, then a pair of ripped blue washed jeans that I paired with my black combat boots. Ranking a hair brush through my raven black hair with normal red streaks, I twisted it up on a ponytail. It’s sort of… strange. Those red streaks I have in my hair grew normally when I reached my tenth birthday…creepy, but I have learned to cope up with it.

I allowed a sigh to escape my lips. Sure, I have a figure… but I hardly show it. It isn’t like I don’t favor my right-proportioned body… I just feel really conservative when it comes to clothes. Looking at myself in front of the mirror, I spotted that have bags under my eyes. Groaning, I padded to the bathroom and gripped firmly on either sides of the sink and stared at my reflection. My eyes came out dull as I expected. They were a shade of a very dark brown that you would see them as black if you were not looking closely. Pushing down the faucet, my actions triggered the water to whoosh down. Cupping my hands together and splashed some water on my face. Feeling refreshed, I grabbed the towel dangling beside the mirror and rubbed my face dry.

I don’t know what’s in for us today. We are normally outsiders in our school because of our total weirdness. Both of us are happy, enthusiastic and outgoing—including the fact that we both take criticisms very well, no matter how harsh they are—which makes us the perfect pair. We dress a lot more modest.  And we’re absolute weirdoes… I don’t know about other people, but they always call us that. We both call ourselves unique! No to the weird part.

Looking at Sin, I finally saw what she has on for the day. She was wearing a black corset with blue and red intricate designs that was carved onto the piece of fabric, defining her right-proportioned body. She was wearing a white, lace skirt as a bottom with dark blue jeans that are tucked neatly into her combat boots, reaching up to the middle of her calf. Her white hair has those black and red highlights—they are not dyed as well and are natural like mine. I noticed that she curled them into ringlets that fell right just on the middle of her back. She’s wearing bright, blue contacts today. I like it, her eye color accentuated her smoky makeup. I always tell her that her really eye color is prettier but she always wears contacts whenever we go out, or just staying at home.

But what caught my attention is the ugly bruise on her right arm. I wouldn't have caught it if I didn't know her that well. Anger boiled in my veins. Knowing it was from her dad. She hides them very well so anyone else can't see them, but I am the only one that knew of the fact that her whole family abuses her since she her mom abandoned them. They are all blaming it on her, she is considered the reason why her mom left.

Sighing, I stared at her in the eye. “What the heck did he do this time Sin?”

Looking down, I can see her leaky eyes. But she tried to hold back the tears. I admire her, she always wants to stand strong, no matter how much suffrage she endured from her family. “Dad came into my room when I took out my contacts to change them. You know how he and my brothers hate my eyes. They always remind them of mom. I moved so he wouldn’t hit my face… and it ended up with my arm”

I never understood the reason why her family hurts her, it isn’t her fault their mom ran away! That is why I’m trying to convince her on moving in with me. She’s better off without her family. She’s already planning of moving out when she turns eighteen. Now that she is,she  has agreed on moving in with me.

I walked over to her and engulfed her into a bear hug. As much as possible, we try to comfort each other. We’re pretty much in the same situation. The only difference is that I’m an orphan and had no more family left. My cruel aunt was abusing me so I ran away. Then was I was taken into an orphanage, but I escaped when I was sixteen and grew up independently. I worked hard to be able to sustain all my needs. Having three jobs a day that was just enough to pay my apartment and to feed me. Luckily, all my hard work paid off because I earned  scholarship on my school which weighed off the burden a lot. Sin and I are graduating this year and we’re heading off to college… after that, then we may be able take our professions and start our lives better.

“It is okay now, sis.” I told her, pulling away and smiling encouragingly at her. “We will get through this together.

“Thanks” she muttered. “I wouldn’t have gotten out of torture without you.” she allowed a single tear to escape which made me laugh.

“Come on, sis! You don’t have to cry about it!” I said, jokingly.  She smacked me playfully in the arm and wiped off the tear that strolled down her cheeks.

Gently wrapping an arm around her waist, I start dragging her towards the door while grabbing the keys I placed on top of the dresser. “Come on. Let’s go have some fun” I told her, pulling the door open and walking outside.

The day flew by in a flash. Sin ended up with buying a new above the knee party dress with hot pink ruffles that curved around the top, with black underling that made it look more of waves then ruffles that she paired with knee-high raven black leather boots. I, on the other hand, bought a pink sweat shirt that came with a purple jacket that said ‘Never Too Wild’ and denim skinny jeans that was cut below my knees. I also bought a new pair of ankle-high boots that pretty goes well with the outfit.

She kept ranting about how excited she is, and when we got out of the mall the sun had already set down. I guess that’s how hard it is to pick out outfits that don’t cost much. I glanced at the clock at the mall and discovered that we’ve been here for twelve hours! It took us that long to find the right pair of clothes!

                 My guess… we’re really picky.

“Hurry up!” Sin excitedly grabbed my fingers and began to drag me out of the mall. We already had on the clothes we bought and she’s quite thrilled about going clubbing tonight. She’s really enthusiastic about it… she’s making me start to think that this promise is a pure torture.

Shinaira

I could tell that Elle was starting to regret promising me that I could take her to any club for my birthday! She has been working really hard to sustain her everyday needs so she hasn't gone to any fighter clubs lately. So for a change, I’m going to take her in to one. To club Moonlight, where I can break dance and she can fight if she wants to. Little does Elle know that I am now a fighter, too! Thanks to Jet, the bad a** in our school, he thought me how.

Jet is a senior like us, he is six feet five high with a shock of black hair that reaches his shoulder blade. A tattoo of a snack curls around is right bicep that is colored red with a golden outline. Every day, I run up and hug him. Not because I have some relation with him. There was a big reason why, and he seems to me like an older brother. When I was at Moonlight, a couple of guys tried to rape me. Jet pulled them off after I punched them around but I wasn’t intimidating enough to scare them. After what happened, he taught me how to fight. When I asked him why, he told me that he saw a fighter’s potential within me and that he knows of the abusive ways of my family towards me.

Now he helped me throw a surprise for Elle, I can't wait to see her face!

After all, she’s been a really good friend and this is a small way of mine to say ‘thank you’. She was the one who took me in when I decided to run away… she was one of the refuge I have when I got problems.

After arriving to the nightclub, I grabbed her hand, pulled her out of the cab and began sauntering towards the entrance. She stopped at her tracks and looked at the towering building over her with flashing lights. Music blared from inside the structure and hesitance was clear on her face.

Leaning close to my ear, she began whispering. “Aren’t we… underage to enter clubs like this?”

I flicked my wrist dismissively at her and huffed. “Neh! Don’t be such a killjoy, Elle” I flashed her an innocent, sideways grin. “I’ll handle this” I told her before allowing my hand to tighten its grip around hers, dragging her straight to the club with unrestrained excitement.

The bouncer stopped us at our tracks and held out his hand, inquiring our IDs. I smirked knowingly and reached for the pocket of my jeans, pulling out the inquiries and handing over to him our fake cards. He allowed his eyes to scan over the information printed before looking at us suspiciously before handing us back our possessions before finally pulling the door for us to enter. I smiled sweetly at him before yanking Elle’s arm and drawing her inside the nightclub.

Oh! This is gonna be fun!
