Character thoughts-present vs past

This topic is as well can change based on user preference. This is going to be a basic analysis of character thoughts and examples of using them in the present during writing that's in the past.

Usually, not always, a story is written in the past.

Ex. He woke up. They ran to the store. She ate dinner.

It's all been done.

It all depends on whether the story is in first or third point of view.

If it's first, then thoughts currently going on is acceptable and can flow.

Ex. I'm thinking today is going to be a good day. I woke up, washed up, and am ready to go.

Both tenses are present but since it's first point of view, the use of "thinking" flows.

Third point of view, usually thoughts are also in the past. Thoughts can be expressed in numerous ways. It call depends on the author.
I've seen italics, apostrophes, or just plain dialogue.

Ex. "He is so annoying," Bella thought.

Ex. Bella gave Henry an annoyed look. I hate him so much.

Ex. 'He is so annoying,' Bella thought.

I hope his helps!
