Chapter Fourteen: Questions.

I stared at the horse for a long minute, taking everything in. This horse, this beautiful white horse was my mother. My mother was here with me, not an impostor but her. I had no doubt in my mind that this was her. I hadn’t felt so strongly of anything in my life. Even when I first spoke with the impostor, I didn’t feel as close to it as I did the horse right now. For what felt like a century, I felt there was hope. So many questions started to pour into my mind like, ‘how did she get inside of a horse?’ and ‘Why she was not in heaven where she belonged?’

“I know you probably have many questions to ask me sweet heart and I’ll answer them as best I can,” said my mother to me. She walked forward towards Nathaniel and smiled. “Can you leave us alone for a few minutes so we can talk please? Daisy over there is getting impatient waiting on her oats.” She told him, gesturing to a horse across from her.

Nathaniel gave her a quick pat on the head and smiled before going away to feed the other horses.

Mother turned around and laid down the hay and signalled for me to grab a nearby stool and sit with her. I did so and stared at the magnificent creature before me.

“Mother, I really can’t believe you are here,” I said.

“I can say the same about you Mercy, I haven’t seen you since you were nine and you’ve grown up so nicely and become such a beautiful young lady.” She told me. “Oh how I hate the fact I’ve missed so much of your life.”

I smiled and bowed my head. “You haven’t missed much mother.” She had actually missed a lot of events in my life but I did not want to make her feel bad.

“I have, I missed you so much Mercy. There hasn’t been a day I hadn’t thought about you, or your father. Oh how I miss him,” he voice faltered halfway through her sentence and I realised father wasn’t the only one heartbroken in this situation.

“I can say the same about you mother,” I said, getting on my knees and wrapping my arms around the horse’s neck and cuddling it. This felt nice, two of my favourite things in the world; horses and my mother, was wrapped up in one special package for me.

“Mercy, how has your father been?”

My heart fell in my chest. “He’s been…difficult.”

“How so?”

“Um…he has been very sad .”

“I see.”

I stroked the top of mother’s head soothingly as I saw a little tear roll down her face. “Mother, I have to ask-”

“How I cam to become a horse?”

“Well…yes mother.”

“Well, when I died my spirit did not make it to the afterlife. I couldn’t speak; I couldn’t interact or communicate with people. I could move things and such but that scared people. I saw people but they could not see me. I was able to walk amongst humans but that wasn’t enough. Sometimes I’d see horrible things happen to innocent people and was unable to do anything about it. Life was awful for the two years after I died. Though, it was worse that I had to watch you grow up, unhappy and confused and be unable to hug you or kiss you and tell you things would be alright.”

“You mean…you were watching over us?”

“Yes. Seeing you both so unhappy made me so frustrated. I had never wanted anything more but to have a minute or two with you and your father . Though, I found a loop hole in the agreement I made. I found this beautiful horse – Bella – and started to share her body. She was fine about it. Nathaniel then mistook me for one of the stable’s lost horses and took me in and looked after me. Bella shares my…well speaking skills and talks to Nathaniel. I tell her what to say because I she can’t speak the sort of English he would understand but I have not spoken before.”

“A flaw in your agreement? What agreement?”

“When I was burning, I felt so hopeless. I knew I was going to die, I knew that I would never see you or your father again. The only bright side of the whole ideal would be that I’d find peace and pass into heaven. Though, you know what they say – witches go to hell. I was afraid of hell; the thought burned my heart even more than the flames. I felt my body start to disintegrate and my spirit being tugged away from it and seconds before my spirit was almost disconnected from my body…a voice came to me.”

A voice? My eyes grew wider and my stomach churned. Was it the voice? The same voice that’s talks to me?

“But mother I do not understand. You have never done anything worthy of hell in your life! Why would you be afraid of hell?!”

Mother sighed and shook her head. “Alas my child, if you ever stare death in the face you will have that worrying beetle of doubt burrow deep inside of your brain. No one can be sure what the afterlife holds for them. The outcome can be surprising.”

“Oh mother,” I cried, snuggling into her neck.

“I am alright Mercy. I am quite content here.”  A long moment of silence passed and I could hear the other horses devouring their evening meal. “The voice told me I could go to a good place – a place where there is no physical suffering like hell would be – if I agreed to go willingly. I thought it was a good idea, that it would guarantee a peaceful afterlife so I said yes to the voice and allowed it to pull my spirit away from the fire. It did not send me to hell but neither did it send me to Heaven. As soon was away from my body, there was a clap of lightning and I was standing in front of the flames. I watched my burning form unable to move, do any magic or interact with my executers. All I could do was witness the rest of my remains burn.”

Tears were starting to soak the surrounding hay as I wept into my mother’s neck. My poor mother. Although she was not in human form, I didn’t feel the slightest bit awkward being cuddled up by a horse. It was my mother, my beautiful mother in side of a horse. I would not care if she weren’t a horse – she could be a rat or a pig for all I cared. Being here in her presence made me feel so happy; happiness different from being in love or receiving a large amount of money. This was what getting a loved one back felt like.

“Mercy you mustn’t cry. That is all in the past. The important thing is that you are safe and well and I have you again.” She told me and I nodded. She was right. Though my past can’t simply be forgotten, things needed to be set right.

“Do you know what granted you this fate mother?”

“A Daemon.”

“A Daemon? Is that not Greek?”

“Yes but witches use the term differently. It is like a demon, but a thousand times worse. It is a slimy little creature who likes to destroy lives and cause misery. I have seen many at work. They would do things like place an item in your pocket in the market and let you be trialled for theft. They would leave a window or a door open in your bedroom and you would catch the worst diseases. They would place a pair of briefs in a couple’s bed so one would feel betrayed by the other. Daemon’s main goal is to just cause havoc and they receive a sick pleasure from it. There is a handful about in this town. One of the Daemons came to me and gave me that offer.”

“Do they…follow families? Like do they torment lets say a mother, then her daughter then her daughter?”

“Not usually. They like to have their fun and then leave. I guess if the family held a particular interest then they’ll stay with the family.” She told me. “Why do you ask?”

“Mother…I think the same Daemon that came to you at death has been following our family.”

“That can’t be. They…”

“Mother I’m sure what's been following me is what you are talking about.”

“No sweetie, that cannot be possible. They don’t usually make themselves known. If something bad has happen and you think it’s a Daemon then you need to tell me.”

“Mother, can they take forms of people?”

“Yes, to play tricks on people and make them believe they are haunted.”

“Mother, one of them ‘haunted’ me. But in the form of you.” I was scared to tell her this. Mother had always been an understanding person but I don’t know how a person would react to this.

Mother’s eyes locked on mine for a moment and she got up to her feet and began to ram the doors of her stable and braking wooden pales and feeding bowls around her in a blind rampage of anger.

“Mother!” I screamed for her to stop but she wouldn’t listen. She was screeching and yelling so loudly that Nathaniel ran in.

“Bella! Bella! Calm down girl,” he tried to say but she continued to destroy her section of the stable.

“Mercy, grab that rope on the wall!” Nathaniel shouted over the yelling. I looked and saw a hook with a rope neatly wrapped around it. I took it and threw it at Nathaniel and he manage to tie a knot in it so it could go and around mother’s neck. She struggled at the restraint and I feared Nathaniel would strangle her. He yanked the rope towards him which made her stop. “Mercy’s mother…or Bella or what ever name you go by – you need to stop this. She is your daughter and she needs you to be here for her. This outburst only scared her and I know you do not want that.”

Slowly, she stopped struggling and stood still with her eyes closed. “I’m sorry Mercy. The thought of the Daemon interfering in your life just made me angry. I did not mean to scare you.” Mother apologised.

I was not afraid of Mother, I was more stunned at the sudden outburst of anger. “You know a lot about Daemon, how do you send them away?”

“A single being can not banish it back to hell. Its dark magic is too strong.”

“Oh.”

“But three witches Thompson witches might do the trick.”

“Thompson witches? That’s perfect mother, I could find some of our lost cousins and get their help-”

Mother shook her head. “It’s not as simple as that sweetie. We are the only Thompson in this village and within probably a mile radius. When I was killed they thought our whole family had been exposed and there was a death sentence for all the Thompson family. They are miles away. Only Thompson witches can do this, we are part of a long line of pure witch breeds. Three Thompson witches can only banish a Daemon if they have the ritual spell perfected. They also need a three part…”

“A three part what mother?”

“I…Ah curse my horrible memory! I can not remember the parts of the ritual,”

“Did you have it written down? If you do I could go and find it.” Nathaniel offered.

“Yes, I did have it on paper. I was writing it down and left it quickly because my husband was calling for me. It may be in one of my spell books back at home Mercy. I cannot remember since I quickly put it in the first one I saw. You remember where I kept my books don’t you Mercy?”

I could not go home. I did not want to see my father like that. I was not welcome in my own home anymore.

Nathaniel must have seen the panic begin to spread across my face so he quickly said. “I’ll go to your home and get the spell.”

I turned to him. “You won’t know where it is.”

“I’ll root around for it when your father is working.” He shrugged.

“Nathaniel, I’m sure Mercy is perfectly capable of going home and getting-” mother said.

“Yes I am, I’ll go.” I said.

“Then I’m coming with you,” Nathaniel told me.

“No Nathaniel this is my duty.” I argued.

He gave me a look that screamed ‘it’s not safe for you anymore,’

“Nathaniel I must.”

“If you insist, then I am coming with you.”

“Why would you want to come anyway?” I sounded a little harsh then, but he did not have to come. I am a woman and I can retrieve this ritual spell all on my own.

“I am coming because I’d like to have some part in destroying this thing that has made your mother and you so miserable.”

Mother stopped our bickering back and forth by stamping her hoof. “I’ll take you both. I practically raised you both. After all, I am a horse.” Mother winked at me and I smiled. It was lovely to have her back.

“Raised us both?” I asked.

She smiled. “While I was with Nathaniel he was sad. Mercy, you had your father to love and take care of you without me – and he has done a good job of it – but Nathaniel’s parents did not really give a damn about him. I built his confidence.”

I beamed at my mother. Although I felt a tiny stab of jealousy in my heart, it was overpowered by the fact that I finally realised I only wanted my mother. I did not need her. I am healthy, fully grown and well educated and I owe that o my father despite his current state. Mother must have known I did not need her too so when she found a little boy in need of some stability she helped as much as she could. I felt so proud and happy she was my mother.

Nathaniel clapped his hands and grinned. “So it is settled. We’ll leave tomorrow morning.”

“Yes,” mother agreed. “now, off to bed. Both of you.”

“But I want to talk to you more-”

“Oh Mercy, I’ll always be here to talk to you. Right here in my stable. Well, at least if the new owner takes over and changes things but I’ll be around.”

“Oh Mercy is the new owner. The duke gave the stables to her.” Nathaniel told mother.

Her eyes widened with shock. “You own the stables?”

I had almost forgotten about the Duke’s will and how he had signed it over to me. “Yes, I do.”

“But why?”

“It’s a long story mother. Can I stay here with you mother?”

“Here? In a stable?”

“Yes mother, I want to stay with you and tell you everything.”

She looked to Nathaniel for agreement and he nodded and said goodnight.

“If you’re staying can I have more apples!?” said a completely new voice from the horse.

“What?”

Mother shook her head and blinked a few times. “Sorry, that was Bella talking.”

I smiled and picked up a bag of apples by the door and fed mother again. It was m little thank you for allowing mother to share her body.

“Now, tell me everything.”

All night we spoke of what had happened since she died. I skipped out father’s revenge plot, the Duke’s death and Alexander being killed but told her of my engagement. It didn’t hurt because I avoided talking about Alexander’s death along with having my hand on mother. I told her how in love I was and happy. She was over the moon and made me give all the details about the whole thing. I made up that he proposed to me and the wedding plans.

I think I needed time to explain the bad things to mother. Mother did not deserve to have them on her shoulders since everything was in the name of revenge for her. If she knew it would kill her and I wanted her with me now. Tommorow, I am going to figure out how to destroy the monster and get the revenge I needed. The Daemon had caused my mothers’ death and drove my father insane and I was going to get my revenge.
