Chapter 5 –

I was walking down the hallway looking for my next classroom whilst still trying to ignore the stares I was receiving. It was period four at the moment and people still weren’t tired of looking at my face. There was a permanent blush on my face considering I wasn’t used to this amount of attention. I looked around worried about how I was going to get my second tardy on my first day as ‘new student’.

Yes my second tardy, seeing as I wasted more than half an hour of period one in Mr Wallace’s classroom. Being the fool I am I even forgot to ask Mr Wallace for a note. I was thankful that I slipped by with just an afterschool detention, because the teacher looked like she was considering strangling me for disrupting the class. I shuddered, thinking what would have happened if I hadn’t caught sight of Trey in the hallway when I had.

I was still pretty annoyed with myself for how easily I had fallen prey to Brett’s trick. And I had half a mind of confronting him about it. I refused to put up with his silly entertainment. But then that was what they were, silly little tricks, and I should have known better than to listen to the likes of him. Guilt flooded through me for the tenth time that day as I thought I was holding him responsible for me being a foolish brat.

This was what kept repeating in my mind the whole day, the anger and the guilt. I was so irritated with myself for being unable to control my thoughts and focus on a good first day rather than a stupid mistake.

I couldn’t comprehend how that Holt guy could control water. As a matter of fact I couldn’t understand how anyone would be able to do such a thing. It was in humane!

I was half convinced that the whole thing had been my imagination, but I couldn’t think of anything as to why half the people in the room were drenched. Which brings me back to water control, I couldn’t help but cringe at the thought. I even sounded strange to myself. I made a mental note to ask Katie or Trey about my ‘water control’ theory the next time I saw them.

I was pretty sure I had made two new friends, Katie and Trey. Katie seemed friendly enough, unless she was pretending. Guilt wracked through me at the thought, I had no right to judge anybody including Katie, especially since she was being nothing but nice to me.

As to where Trey was concerned, he seemed thankful for my intervention in the fight much to my discomfort. I just replied to him with simple ‘it’s okays’ keeping from him the fact that I was completely and utterly terrified of water in action. Other than that he was fun to hang around and seemed completely honest.

I couldn’t shrug the fact that this year would be extremely dramatic.

Pausing, with one look at the room number I headed inside it, finding nearly all the students present. Looking around I noticed Brett and his friend Holt sitting in a corner in the back. It was hard to miss considering all the girls and guys surrounding them. Even though they were talking to everyone, they didn’t look like a part of the crowd, they looked like leaders. I gazed at him as he laughed now along with all the girls and compared it with the images I had before when I crashed into him the first time. I compared the image of him grinning with the image of him all depressed and angry. I could see through the pretence he was keeping up and was horrified at the idea of someone having to hide behind a mask of another personality. Again the soon to be familiar feeling of guilt wracked through me, I really had to stop judging people, he obviously wasn’t the person who he displayed himself as, but that didn’t give me the right to mind his business.

Catching sight of Katie and Trey in the back I walked over to them. Katie was sitting on one of the desks, her expression turning ecstatic when she caught sight of me. She was having a conversation with another guy who was perched up on the seat opposite to her, while Trey was leaning against her table talking to another couple of people. He looked around when he heard Katie stop talking. A grin lit up on his face when he came in contact with me. Looking back up to Katie I saw her looking back and forth between me and the guy she was talking to with a mischievous glint in her eyes, then she looked at Trey and again back and forth between me and the guy, and then back at Trey, a grin lighting up on her face.

“Hey Giezel! Up here! This is Daniel” she said pointing toward the guy she was talking to “he has quite a bad boy status, you won’t ever be bored”. He had shaggy brown hair and onyx eyes. He had quite a bit of muscle but was not that huge, just enough to give him what he needed to charm his way through things. To say he was cute was an understatement. My face flamed up at the thought to which he just smiled and winked.

Trey snickered “Dude trust me, he never gets tired.” He said, twisting his lips into an amused smile.

My eyes widened when I caught the meaning behind their words, another wave of hotness flooding my cheeks. “You—

But I was cut off when Daniel started walking toward my desk, whilst looking toward the door. Backing up on the seat I caught sight of a lady who I assumed was the teacher. Realising this was why Daniel walked over to my desk, I scooted over to the other side. Looking up to see if we had enough place on the desk I saw a frown come on his face for a second which he then masked with a smile after catching me eye. I shrugged off his behaviour facing the front of the class room where the teacher resumed explaining something about persuasive techniques.

At the end of the class Trey and Daniel were waiting outside the classroom, while me and Katie gathered our stuff before exiting.

“Had fun sitting with Daniel, huh?” she asked me, when we saw that they weren’t waiting for us after all. Puzzled I looked at her questioningly.

Looking at me she elaborated, “Oh well, you see, today since you were sitting in his seat so cosily…” she trailed off suggestively.

“His seat?” I asked, even more puzzled then I was a few moments ago.

“Yea, sorry, I keep forgetting you’re new, since I feel like I’ve always knew you.” She said with a little smile on her lips, “That’s his seat, almost everyone in that class has their own preferred seat..everyone keeps to their spot because the once someone sat on Darren’s spot he was bloody pissed…” she trailed off, probably travelling down that memory lane.

“Now who’s Darren?” I asked, confused about names for probably the fiftieth time that day. I shrugged it off, I was never that good with names anyway, not that I stuck around anywhere long enough to make friends. In fact, I tried to stay as antisocial as possible. I felt it was best to travel with no connections.

I thought back to the last place I had stayed, Egypt. A smile lit up my face as I thought of the warmth and familiarity the place held. But then the smile turned into a grimace when I remembered why I had to short live the experience. I tried to compose myself, coming back to the present.

“…he smashed his face right in, looked awful for the rest of the week and then left,” she said exhaling a pff of air for exaggerated effect. I burst out laughing, I was so wrapped up in my thoughts, I hadn’t heard half the stuff she was on about, the ‘pff’ just added to the humour.

“Why are you laughing?” Then it hit her that I didn’t understand what she was bucking about, but to my astonishment her eyes widened, “There’s stuff in my teeth! Shit! I totally forgot about it!” she said rushing to the nearest place where she could see her reflection.

I had another fit of laughter, my knees weakening due to the impact. Katie was still looking for stuff in her teeth, while muttering something about ‘cookies’, ‘yummy’ and ‘should’ve waited’. When she couldn’t find anything she   turned back to me. Seeing me on the ground due to my laughter, understanding flooded her face when she realised what I really was laughing about. For a moment a smirk set on her lips, but it disappeared so quickly that I could probably have imagined it.

All of a sudden her eyes widened in horror and she let out a blood curling scream, pointing toward my head. Listening to her panicked screams I started screaming as well. Wailing my arms and legs around uselessly, it took me a minute to realise she was screeching ‘spider’. Pausing mid-wail I gave her an incredulous look while calmly stretching my arm over my head to catch the thing. When I didn’t find anything, I looked back up to find Katie giving me an incredulous look this time.

All of a sudden she burst out into fits of laughter. Rolling my eyes up at her childishness I got up off the floor, dusting off my backside in the process. Through her fits of laughter I couldn’t make out all the stuff she was blabbering on about.

I was heading to my locker, after leaving Katie with Trey and Daniel because she was too loud and unstable while she was busy laughing like a maniac. But that was only after she revealed to me that ‘Darren’ was apparently Holt’s first name.

Darren Holt.

His reminded me of the fact that I still had to go ask Brett, or as he preferred it Ryder, what the whole drama this morning was about. I had tried asking Katie and Trey but they would just shrug at me and tell me that they ‘didn’t what I was talking about’. By now I gathered that either they actually meant what they said or they were just pretending. I didn’t really get what it was they were hiding, it’s not like they could pretend a water controlling psycho didn’t exist in our school.

Guilt threatened to spill through my body for thinking ill thoughts about him, after all I didn’t really know him and I was no one to make rash judgements about him. But out of all the holy things in the world, he controlled water. I couldn’t help but fell ill toward him.

I walked down the empty hallway, which felt eerily quiet after this morning. I sped up my pace, I didn’t want to be alone if I could avoid it. As I neared my locker area I heard the soft voice of a girl talking. Deciding to ignore her, I faced my locker to punch in the code to my lock.

“-so have you, um, watched the, uh, new movie that’s, um, just come out?” she asked. I smiled thinking about how shy she sounded. Just like me.

I turned my neck around to see the person talking, making sure my hair partially obscured my face. I saw the girl whom the voice belonged to, she had long wavy muddy brown hair. She wearing an average length cute skirt and was holding her books tightly to her chest with a nervous expression on.

What was surprising was that the person she was talking to was Brett. He smiled at her, not smirk, a genuine smile as he opened his mouth to respond.

“Yea, Cherry, it was a good movie.” He replied smoothly, as he punched in the code to his locker, which was a few lockers down from mine.

“Oh, ok then, I’ll just wait for you in the cafeteria.” She smiled a tight lipped smile, walking away from him, heading toward the cafeteria.

He sighed when her footsteps couldn’t be heard anymore. I wouldn’t get another chance at catching him alone, and I desperately needed some answers. Seizing my chance I quickly stuffed all my books in my locker and shut it quietly. I sneaked up on him so he wouldn’t have the chance of excusing himself.

I was at arm’s length when all of a sudden he turned around lightning quick and seized my wrist with his right arm and twisted it behind my back uncomfortably. Eyes wide, I let out a squeak when I lost my balance due to my position, and landed on something hard making my head ricochet off it with a thud. Gasping, I struggled to get out of his grasp but he had an iron tight hold on me. Seeing my struggles he used his left arm to wrap around my waist, making it even more impossible to struggle under his grasp. I opened my mouth wide to let out a loud scream, but stopped short when I felt his warm breath ticklish on my neck.

Instinctively I snapped my head to the side, hearing a sickening crunch. Effectively his hold on my waist loosened as he felt for his nose, meanwhile twisting my left arm even more into an impossible angle.

“Let go! Let go off me!!” Eyes wide and gasping, I shouted out. I heard another crunch, and an arm wrapped around my waist loosely again.

“Don’t ever try to sneak up on me, new girl.” He breathed into my ear, “It won’t work, and unless you want to get hurt again I’m warning you.” I let out a soft ‘hmm’ while nodding vigorously as a symbol that I understood. He eventually let go off me, turning back to his locker pretending nothing ever happened.

Turning around so I stared at his back, I looked at him eyes wide, disbelief colouring my eyes. I opened my mouth to speak but couldn’t find my voice. I stood there for a whole minute lamely, trying to find my voice.

“Um, Brett –“ I started.

“It’s Ryder.” He said firmly.

“Sorry, Ryder” I replied, “I need you to explain to me what happened this morning.” I stated firmly.
