Laila woke up with a start. Her breath became ragged as she tried to get her breathing under control. The dream, or rather nightmare, had felt so real. So painful. For a second she forgot where she was but then she remembered. She was in Loki’s chambers. She remembered a banquet the night before and seeing Loki’s empty seat.

I must have ran into here’ she thought to herself. Shaking the memories out of her head, she went to get up and walk to the bathroom when an excruciating pain shot through her back. Laila gasped in shock at the pain before grabbing the curtains for support. The sudden weight gain on the fabric sent the curtains tumbling to the floor, taking Laila with it. A huge clattering sound rang through the eerie chamber. Laila’s body remained still on the tiled floor, unable to move. She shuddered as a series of agonising pain hit her back like the thrashings of a whip. It was unbearable. She attempted to get up again by lifting a shaky hand to the nearest piece of furniture she could feel and began to pull herself up when another set of shots hit her, causing her to collapse to the floor once again, pulling the glass of water, which sat on top of the furniture, with her. Glass smashed everywhere as Laila screamed out in pain. She could not bear the pain any longer. Within moments, a maid had entered the chambers and gasped in horror at the state that Laila was in. Quickly she hurried over to assist the wounded princess

“Miss! Miss, what’s wrong?! What happened?!” the maid asked in fear. Laila’s breath became short as she struggled to answer

“Alice! My...back...Please...help me.” She whispered through teary eyes. Alice nodded

“What do you want me to do?” she asked, gaining control of the situation. Laila signalled to the bed

“Get...me...there.” she croaked. Once again Alice nodded in understanding and walked around Laila’s body so she could grip under the princess’ arms. Together they both made their way back to Loki’s bed. Just as they reached the mattress Laila shrieked as more pain tore through her body. Alice encouraged the princess to carry on

“Come on miss! You’re almost there! Just a little further!" She said, desperation growing in her voice. Laila stayed where she was, paralysed by the agony coursing through her spine. Gently put down Laila’s arm, Alice ran to the entrance of the chambers.

“Help! Someone please help!” she shouted, praying someone would hear her cries. Sure enough Thor, Odin and Frigga came running from their own chambers. They reached the entrance of the chambers and Thor addressed the situation

“What’s wrong? What’s happened?” he asked worriedly. Alice replied with fear in her voice

“It’s the princess Laila, Master Thor. She’s in great pain and cannot move from her position on the floor. She keeps screaming. I don’t know what’s wrong with her.” Thor nodded before striding past Alice and hurrying into the room. He saw Laila on the floor almost immediately. He quickly hurried to her side

“Laila what’s wrong? How did this happen?” He asked. Laila’s body shuddered before she could reply

"Thor, it’s Loki. I saw him; in my dreams.  He’s...he’s hurting. They’re torturing him. We have...to help.” She glanced at Thor and Thor noticed the agony in her eyes. He nodded signalling that she didn’t have to speak anymore, before calming her with his voice, hoping it would make it easier for her

“Laila, it’s okay. You’re going to be okay. Now I’m just going to lift you up on to the bed so you can be more comfortable and then you can tell me more about Loki. Are you ready?” Laila nodded silently. Thor began manoeuvring himself so he could support Laila while she made it to the bed. Laila began to get up when her body jolted and she crashed back to the floor. Thor caught her just in time so she didn’t bash her head on the tiles. Laila gasped for air as the pain in her back winded her

“I...can’t...move.” she whispered. Thor knelt beside her

“Laila, I know you can do this. I’m going to be here the whole time okay? Now on the count of three I’m going to lift you up and place you on the bed. I promise I’ll make it as painless as possible.” He said in reassurance. Once again Laila nodded. Thor repositioned himself so he could pick her up “One...Two...Three!” he counted and lifted Laila up with ease. Making it to the bed, Thor laid Laila down on the soft mattress and covered her with the blanket to keep her warm. Meanwhile, during all this, Odin and Frigga and the maid stood and watched in anticipation. As soon as Laila was lying comfortably in the bed, Odin approached her and begin questioning her

“Laila I need you to tell me what happened. Can you remember?” he asked. Laila nodded with fatigue

“It’s Loki, All Father. I had a nightmare about him being tortured. I felt it. I felt his pain on my back. We have to help him. Please.” Laila begged, slightly out of breath. Odin nodded

“May I ask to look at your back Laila to see if there are any abnormalities?” he asked delicately. Laila nodded and turned over so he could have a look. Odin signalled the maid to come over and lift up the princess’ robe. As Laila’s back was revealed to Odin, the maid gasped in shock and covered her mouth. Frigga rushed over to see what so shocking. Glancing at Laila’s back she was speechless with disbelief. Laila’s back was covered with a series of thin, bloody gashes crossing over each other. Thor glanced over Laila’s body

“What is it?” he asked worriedly. Odin glanced across to where Thor was crouched down next to Laila

“It appears that Laila and Loki’s relationship is a little stronger than we thought.” He spoke sullenly. He went to the other side of the bed and looked at Laila who had turned over on to her back, her eyes masked with worry.

“Why? What’s wrong?” She asked quickly. Odin sighed.

“There is a tale that goes around Asgard, princess. A tale about a bond between two people. A bond so strong that it goes a lot deeper than marriage and can never be broken. This bond is called the Eternity Bond.” He said. Laila nodded for him to carry on. Odin took a deep breath “It is believed that this bond happens when two people who truly love each other share their first kiss or sign of affection. After the bond has created itself, it changes the very DNA in your heart so that you love that person unconditionally. Rumour has it that this has only ever happened once before but I do believe that you and Loki have achieved this bond.  However the bond also has its negative effects. For example, if one person feels pain, then somewhere, the other person will feel it too and depending on how strong the bond is, sometimes wounds can also reproduce themselves on the other body. The markings on your back; they’re whip lines. That must mean that out there, somewhere, Loki is in trouble.” He explained. Laila lay there, shocked and speechless. However it wasn’t long before she found her voice again.

“All Father please. We have to help Loki! He took my place to save me and now he is being destroyed by those monsters. He doesn’t deserve this.” She replied defiantly almost in tears. Odin sighed

“I know he needs help princess but we have to think of the outcomes here. If we go charging into Jotunheim then we could put all of Asgard under the threat of war. I don’t think there’s anything we can do” he replied, slightly bitter. Laila fell silent for a few moments.

“You won’t help him? He’s your son. He looked up to you. And now you’re betraying him! He was right! You were never-” she was cut short when Thor put his hand on her shoulder

“Laila. Stop. Think about what you’re saying and who you are saying it to.” He said quietly. He then turned to his father “Go father. I’ll talk to Laila.” He said determinedly. Odin nodded

"Very well. I hope you make a swift recovery princess.” Odin spoke abruptly before striding out of the room. Thor waited until everyone had left before returning his attention to Laila. Laila looked down at her sheets, ashamed of her previous actions towards the king. Thor spoke with a gentle tone

“You should be more careful about who you share your opinions to princess. You could have lost your head for that outburst.” He said warning her. Laila shook her head

“Thor, Loki needs help. He needs to be saved. I need him here. He’s everything to me. Aren’t you going to help? He’s your brother.” she pleaded. Thor fell silent for a moment, thinking of how to answer. Eventually he replied, picking his words carefully

“I know that Loki leaving you was hard. And if Father is right and you have developed this bond then I know that it’s even harder for you both. But i can’t disobey Fathers orders. As much as I want Loki here, he’s right. War is not something we can really deal with right now.” Thor finished finally. Laila fumbled with her bed sheets awkwardly. Thor waited for her response. Finally, Laila replied

“I can’t believe it; his own brother. Do you realise how much Loki looks up to you? How much he admires you? He helps you so much; always there by your side in case you need anything but as soon as he needs help you turn a blind eye. I’m not surprised if Loki never comes home. Even if he did, i wouldn’t ask him to come back here. Here is all full of traitors. Betrayers. You never really cared about him. He was just your scape goat. Something to use to avoid wars and problems within Asgard.” She said curtly. Thor stared at Laila in disbelief before he finally managed to find his voice

“How dare you. I love Loki just as much as you do and more. He’s my brother.” He said, insulted by Laila’s words before striding out of the room. Laila watched him go. As soon as he had left she set her head on the pillow and cried. The only person she wanted now was Loki, but he was in the captivity of the frost giants with no means of escape. At the thought of this Laila screamed Loki’s name into her pillow before falling into a restless sleep.
