my phone continued to vibrate wildly in my hand, sign that i had set off hoseok, but i quickly became irritated and pocketed the device instead. holding onto the straps of my backpack with one hand and my umbrella in the next, i slowly approached my bus stop.
my heart was pounding, but my feet wouldn't slow. the soft pitter patter of rain on the tips my school shoes and socks was usually annoying, but for now, i disregarded the feelings. all i could focus on was kim taehyung and his very lucky girl.
he held their umbrella, and stood by as she opened her gifts one by one. it was a bit obnoxious really, the way her smile had put an even bigger one on his face.
except they looked so happy, that i wondered if it was better to be angry at him or smile along from afar.
her hair was dyed the same shade of auburn as mine, but longer and curled. her two big eyes were somewhat wide set, but with her perfectly pink small mouth and peachy complexion, they made her even prettier.
but even though her bottom row of teeth were straight, she was still not prettier than me.

i pouted, looking at my school shoes in the rain. i wanted to look at my gifts some more, see what was so special about this girl, and even cry a little bit. the more i looked, the worse it hurt.
i only realized how long i had been in that spot, sulking and draking, when the bus arrived. the bright, white light of the vehicle illuminated all the awaiting passengers at the stop, while i fumbled to get my transit card ready for use.
and when i looked up, the girl -- his girl -- was wagging a finger in his face. he laughed at her.
i didn't know what for, but i was stunned nonetheless.
yet i tried to mind my own business at first.
squeezing past taehyung and his girl was much easier than expected. however, this was only because he was so preoccupied with her yelling and had no time to find my eyes in the small crowd.
he looked lost then, now that i thought about it. gloomier than the storm clouds or the grey skies, lonelier than the sound of rain itself while he stood there, taking the brunt of her words.
she was causing a scene. but it was not any of my business, and i boarded the bus.
behind me, i heard her voice raise again. i flinched without looking. she yelled about how she wanted whatever she got in silver, not gold, how it was so easy not to mess up, and how he still did anyway.
but that's taehyung. he messes up. he fails most of his physics tests and kang hates him, but he tries. quite possibly more than any other person i've known before.
these were the words i wanted to say, but it was not my business. so i took my seat on the bus, closed my umbrella, and put my headphones in. and through the worn glass window, i could see his eyes looking straight into mine. he looked like he had something to say to me, but her yelling pulled him away from me again.
so i went home.
