(A/N) I want to dedicate this chapter to @haloscarlet for commenting on the last chapter with a great quote she came up with thats incredibly relevant so I added it in the chapter, its "the harder you try to hold onto someone or something, the more it tries to get away" So thanks so much!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Why do you look so miserable? You should be ecstatic!” A.J said as he helped me bring my large luggage downstairs.
“I am…” I said unconvincingly.
“Lainey…” He said knowingly waiting for an explanation as I let out a deep breath.
“I feel bad for leaving you. It feels like you just got home and then you're going to go back soon. I feel like I should stay and spend as much time with you as I can…” I said as A.J looked at me with a small smile.
“Lainey I’m leaving after new years, we still have a lot of time. And I’m going back to med school not dying…” he said with a small chuckle that made me smile.
“ I know…” I said.
“Listen how about this when you come back I’ll take you ice skating…just like old times.” He said.
“Sounds good…” I said.
“Aw I’m going to miss my baby girl.” My mom said as she came down the steps and wrapped her arms around me tightly.
“How come you're not getting ready for work? Its 6:30 in the morning…” A.J said.
“Well I took off to say goodbye to my baby.” She said as she let me go.
“Is Spencer taking you to the bus?” she asked.
“Nope, Jakes coming.” I said quickly.
“Alright well make sure you bundle up! And be careful!” she said and I nodded as I head Jakes horn beep outside.
“That’s my queue…” I said as I hugged my mom and my brother one last time.
As messed up as everything was I was still so excited about finally getting to go on this trip, and I wasn’t going to let anyone ruin that.
***
“I hate this…” I said as I took a seat on the bus besides Jake across from Rosie and her Rob.
“I thought you were going to have a happier outlook…” Jake said but as I looked at Spence standing at the front of the bus taking attendance as the students entered I couldn’t help but scowl.
“I tried…its not working.”
“Just think about having fun, riding the slopes, and forgetting all about Mr. King.” Jake said with a smile.
“I guess you're right…” I said.
“Always am,” he said with a smirk.
“Alright guys, quiet down!” Spence said from the front of the bus. His voice was strong and authoritative grabbing the attention of everyone on the bus.
“As you all know I’ll be taking over your homeroom for the ski trip and I demand the same respect that you would give any other teacher.” He said.
“It’s a 6 hour ride up to Oakdale and we’re going to try to make as least stops as possible, but if you need anything just come up to me and ask.” He continued.
“We have an extra seat next to me if any of you are uncomfortable where you are…” he said and over a dozen girls raised their hand. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at the arrogant smirk he tried to hide.
“Well I guess I’ll leave the seat empty for now…” he said with a small chuckle as the girls lowered their hands with a sigh.
“Okay so relax, take a nap, chill out, stay in your seats, and just don’t bother me and the next 6 hours will fly by…” he said and then went to sit down.
As the bus started to move I could hear the whispers around me that were all about Spencer.
‘Oh my god isn’t he just adorable in that sweater?’
‘He totally was looking at me…’
‘I swear he wants me.’
‘I’m definitely going to seduce him over this trip, he’ll never be able to say no.’
“Ugh we just started moving and I already think I’m going to lose it!” I said exasperated.
“Just ignore them…I updated my Eminem selection, I bet it I’ll get you through the next few hours.” Jake said he held out the headphone for me to make.
I couldn’t help but smirk at Jake. He was the only one who knew me better than anyone else and I was so lucky to have him as a friend…
“Thanks babe.” I said as I took the earphone from him and leaned my head against his shoulder…maybe this trip wont be too bad I thought to myself.
***
**Spencer’s POV**
As I quickly glanced back at Lainey it killed me to see her leaning her head on that assholes shoulder. It was taking all the self-control I had not to go over there and make a big scene in front of everyone.
As I irritably looked down at the clipboard in front of me letting out a deep breath as I went over the list of names once again I heard the sound of heels stepping towards me. When I looked down I saw the black boots standing in front of me and I already knew who it was.
“How can I help you Jessica?” I said in an annoyed tone. This girl has been batting her eyelashes at me and talking to me every chance she got since I started working.
“Well I was wondering how long until we stop?” she said trying to attempt to sound seductive but it just gave me the chills.
“It’s only been a half hour since we left, so probably another hour and half.” I said as I looked up at her.
“I’ve been feeling kind of nauseous, do you think I could sit with you?” she asked with a smirk that made me nauseous.
“I don’t think that’s the best idea, especially sitting up in the front where you feel all the bumps in the road. I think the best place for you is in the middle where you’ve been seating.” I said with a smirk as I watched her smile turn into an annoyed frown.
As I watched her stomp away my mind returned back to Lainey who fell asleep leaning on his shoulder.
The anger and jealousy raised inside me no matter how I tried to ignore it.
As I looked out the front of the large windshield and saw the large pothole in the lane next to us I couldn’t help but smile.
“You know I think you should switch lanes, we should be stopping at a rest stop soon.” I told the bus driver who nodded and switched lanes. After a few moments I sat back down and held on the seat because I knew we were approaching the large pothole. Just as we went over it the whole bus shook drastically, as I looked back at Lainey who was forcefully awoken from her slumber.
As much as it pained me to continue these games with her, I already knew that I was winning…
***
“Alright class we’re approaching the rest stop now, you’ll all have 20 minutes to go out stretch your legs, eat, and use the restroom.” I heard Spencer say.
“Ugh I hate busses…” I said as I stretched my arms.
“Who doesn’t?” Jake said.
“So Jakey I’m surprised you didn’t get yourself a girl to entertain on this trip.”
“Well I know how much you needed me and I’m going to do my best to be there for you…” he said with a smirk.
“Oh really? Aare you sure it isn’t because you want to stay single for al the hot snow bunnies at the lodge?” I said with a raised eyebrow as I watched his smirk turn into a grin.
“You know me to well,” he said as I rolled my eyes.
Once the bus stopped and everyone began to get off I could feel my heart racing as I waited behind the long line of students slowly making there way off the bus. I wasn’t looking forward to passing Spence at all.
Just as I let out a deep breath and braced myself for passing him I heard him call my name.
“Lainey wait for me outside.” He said and I couldn’t help but sigh.
“Don’t worry babe, you can do this…” Jake whispered into my ear just as we stepped off the bus.
“Don’t you look cute.” Jake said as his eyes gazed up and down my body.
“Now you compliment me?” I asked as I folded my arms in front of my chest.
“Hey, I’m a guy it takes me a while.” He responded.
It was pretty chilly out; we even had a few snowstorms so I made sure I was bundled up. I was wearing a grey beanie, a large long sleeve black sweater with a white cross on it, and grey and black tribal leggings with grey uggs.
“Lainey…” I heard Spencer say.
“Well I should go, I’ll meet you inside?” he said and I nodded in response.
“What?” I asked annoyed.
“Is that anyway to talk to your teacher…” he said with a smirk as I rolled my eyes.
“I just wanted to tell you that your mom gave me money to use on you for the trip, so I was going to go and get us something to eat….” He said and I couldn’t help but feel guilty, he was just trying to do something good…and once again I was being a douche.
“Alright, but I’m going to go eat with Jake.” I said as I watched let out a deep breath.
“Okay then…here.” He said as he handed me over a $20 bill.
“Thanks.” I said just as I turned to leave I heard him call my name.
“Maybe you want to sit next to me and keep me company?” he said with a smirk as he looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
It bothered me how careless he was. Even if everyone in town knew how close he was with my family, people talk…
I couldn’t believe that I thought that he’d actually care about that enough to stay away from me.
“Nope.” I said popping the ‘p’ as I went to turn away again but this time I felt his grip on my forearm holding me there.
“The more you fight it, the worst its going to be…” he said as he pulled me closer to him breathing his warm breath on my lips making my heart beat race.
Thankfully students started to come out and he let go of me and pushed me away. As soon as I got the chance I turned and left as quickly as I could.
It was so hard to try and forget how I felt with him, forget how much he meant to me…and he wasn’t making it any easier.
Al I wanted to do was forget the way he made my heart race, forget the way his touch sent jolts of electricity throughout my body, forget the way his smile made my insides turn to mush…but I was beginning to feel like it was impossible.
The only thing that was getting me through this and helping me was something my mother used to say when she talked about my dad. ‘The harder you try to hold onto someone or something, the more it tries to get away…’ (quote by @haloScarlet, THANK YOU!)
I never talked about my father or really thought of him, because I barely remembered him. He left before I was a year old to go marry his secretary.
But the thing I did remember was how my mom talked about him. She never wanted a divorce. No matter what he did and how much he hurt her she was willing to work things out, but he wasn’t…and she learned her lesson the hard way.
I kept trying to convince myself that this was the exact definition of that quote. The more Spence tried to get me to be with him, the more I didn’t want to…but I wasn’t sure that was true.
On one hand it was, and the other it wasn’t. I didn’t want to be with him, or at least I thought I didn’t. And his cocky confident attitude wasn’t helping either; it just made me realize how wrong he was for me…
But deep down I knew the truth…it was just the matter of when and if it was ever going to come out.
***
We were finally almost there and I honestly couldn’t wait to get out of this bus. Because here I was surrounded by these thoughts that were killing me…
We stopped 2 more times after my conversation with Spencer, and I was glad that since then he hasn’t tried to talk to me again…
But it was like I couldn’t escape the stare that he gave me every so often, the stare that made me want to forget everything that happened and wrap my arms around him.
“15 more minutes guys!” Spencer said and everyone began to cheer happily as I sat there looking out the window watching my surroundings pass me by.
15 minutes flew by because before I knew it the bus slowed up behind the 3 other busses in front of us.
When I looked outside I saw the floor was covered in snow and I couldn’t help but smile at the sight.
“Alright once you guys get outside stand in 2 single file lines so I could take attendance and when the other classes are ready we’ll go inside.” He said and the bus started to clear.
As I waited for the line of students to move I looked out the window at the large lodge cabin with smoke coming from the fireplace on the top of a snowy mountain. I could even see the large ski slopes behind it and the ski lift.
It looked huge and beautiful as the snow fell around it.
I ignored Spencer as I passed him and continued to listen to the excitement around us.
“Wow…” I said as I finally got outside and stood beside Jake in the lines.
“I know, man I can’t wait!” Jake said as I smiled.
“Me either.” I said.
“We’re going to have an awesome time, no moping, no depressing shit, just good old plain fun.” Jake said with a bright smile that made me laugh.
Thankfully Spence seemed too busy to bother me as we followed him and the other 3 classes up the small hill to the large ski resort.
I wasn’t cold at all as I watched my beautiful surroundings. I was literally walking in a winter wonderland…
When we finally made it to the cabin and we walked in I couldn’t help but be so excited.
“Welcome to the Oakdale Ski Lodge.” I heard a voice say at the door.
“Welcome…” he said again and again as the students entered, I could even hear the girl giggling up in front as they passed him.
Finally when Jake and I approached the door, I knew what the fuss was about…
“Welcome to Oakdale Ski Lodge, I’m Carter.” Said a beautiful guy with a bright smile, large chocolate eyes and brown hair that sat perfectly on his head.
“Hi, I’m Lainey…” I said as I bit my bottom lip nervously as I heard someone clear there throat behind me wanting me to move.
I quickly glanced down nervously as smiled before I walked away.
When I looked back at him he smiled at me with his perfect white teeth and winked at me creating butterflies in my stomach.
“Earth to Lainey!” Jake said bringing me back to reality.
I looked around the enormous lobby and it was amazing. There was a brick fire place against the wall with a seating area, large windows that put the falling snowflakes on display, comfy couches, a refreshment bar, elevators, and of course the front desk right by the large curling staircase.
“What?” I asked.
“You're drooling…” he said and I looked at him wide eyed.
“Lainey, Jake, are we interrupting something?” Spencer said with a nasty tone as we both shook our head.
“Like I was saying, these are your itinerary’s for the trip outlining our plans for each day…don’t worry you have plenty of time for yourselves. But I was a student myself, and I remember coming here like it was yesterday…and I know you're all planning to sneak out of your rooms even though it specifically says that curfew is at 11. Listen I’m not going to go out of my way to catch you, but if I do you're going to be sorry…” Spencer said.
“So grab your room keys and your roommate, settle in and meet me back down here at 3.” He said and we all quickly dispersed from the lobby.
“Meet me later?” I said to Jake.
“But of course.” He said just as I felt Rosie grab my arm pulling me to the stairs.
“Oh my goodness!” she said as I looked at her questioningly.
“Did you see that insane gorgeous boy eyeing you like you were a piece of meat!” she said as we reached the second floor where all the students in our homeroom would be staying.
“What?” I asked playing dumb.
“That boy who works here, who welcomed every one in…he spent a little extra time welcoming you…” she said as we stood outside our room.
“That doesn’t mean anything he’s just being friendly…” I said.
“You can’t tell me that he isn’t the cutest boy you’ve ever seen,” she said just as the elevator opened as I saw Spence coming out smirking at me.
“Oh look, you girls have a room right across from mine…how funny…” he said with a smirk that told me this was all apart of his plan.
I let out a deep breath ignoring him as I pushed the door open and jumped on one of the twin beds.
“Stop ignoring the facts, that guy is exactly what you need to have a little fun!” Rosie said.
“Seriously Rose, that was his job…” I said as I lay on the bed as she explored the rest of the room.
“He didn’t tell anyone else his name…I checked,” she said with a raised eyebrow as I shrugged my shoulders
“Oh my goodness there’s a hot coco machine!” she yelled from inside and I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Serious girl you deserve a little fun.” She said as she took a seat on the bed just as both are phones went off.
‘Secret after curfew party tonight at the indoor swimming pool in the basement bring your suit…be there after 12 when all the teachers are asleep DON’T GET CAUGHT.’ Read the mass text that was sent to everyone in the senior class.
“Yes!” Rosie said with excitement.
“Exactly what I was waiting for…” she said with a smile.
“Isn’t the staff going to tell?”
“Nope, our schools been coming here for so long they know the deal…” she said just as I heard a knock on the door.
When I opened it I saw Carter standing there with Bellman Cart filled with luggages.
“Oh hi…” I said.
“Hey, I’m here with your luggage…which is a lot…” he said with a smirk making me laugh.
“Oh well come on in.” I said as he brought my 2 luggage’s and Rosie’s 2 inside the room.
“Thanks a lot…” I said as I took the money from Rosie and handed it to him but he just shook his head.
“Keep your money, it’s on the house,” he said with a smirk.
“Well thanks again, I really wish you’d let me tip you…” I said.
“Don’t worry, its fine,” he said and I smiled.
“Ahem….” Rosie said as she waved her phone at me with the mass text still there. I knew what she wanted me to do but I wasn’t sure it wasn’t the best idea…
“Fun…” Rosie mumbled at I glared at her while Carter looked at her puzzled.
“Uhm listen I know you work and everything but I was wondering if you wanted to come to a party later tonight at the pool…” I said.
“Wow, I always hear about the famous party from my coworkers…ya know your schools kind of a legend here.” He said and I chuckled.
“But yeah it sounds fun, I actually was planning to work it tonight…but I’d rather hang out with you…” he said and I couldn’t but blush at his response.
“So I’ll see you tonight?” I said and nodded with a smile before he left and I closed the door.
“Yay…!” Rosie said as she jumped up and down on the bed I couldn’t help but laugh at her.
For some reason I was actually really excited about tonight, I felt like it was gong to be fun. For once I wont have to worry about Spencer or Rob or anything else and just have fun…
And it didn’t hurt that it would be with a gorgeous guy…
Yeah, maybe forgetting about Spence isn’t going to be as hard as I thought it would be…or so I thought…
