Chapter 16

I woke up to deep breathing and deadly screams next to me, making me quickly look towards Chris in panic. He was sweating, making his dark brown hair stick on to his face. He was mumbling incoherently.

“Chris! Chris! Wake up, everything’s okay.” I tried to comfort him, trying to gently shake him awake.

I was surprised that my parent’s hadn’t bust open the door once Chris starting screaming.

I slapped Christopher in the face, making him open his eyes and stopping his nightmare.

“You’re okay, Chris.” I whispered gently, trying not to scare him.

He looked around my room, looking surprised.

“Do you want to talk about it?” I whispered, running my hand through his hair.

“You have no idea what I’ve done, Rose.” He said, shaking his head. “Promise me one thing.”

I saw the distress displayed in his piercing blue eyes and I couldn’t help but nod. “What?”

“Never come by my place when I’m with my gang. I don’t want you to see me that way.”

I nodded slowly, thinking. “Alright. I promise.”

The distress was wiped away from his face as soon as I said I promise and relief appeared in his face instead. He grabbed my hand and kissed it softly. “You have no idea how much relief that brings me.”

I smiled but laid back on the bed, my back to his. “I’m going back to sleep. Don’t wake me up again unless you want to get your ass beat.”

His soft chuckle was the last thing I heard as I fell asleep.

**********

Christopher ate his cereal awkwardly as Riley studied his every move with a suspicious look.

“So who are you again…?” She asked, curious.

“Chris.” He answered dryly, looking uncomfortable.

Chris obviously never surrounded himself around kids. Out of all things in the world who knew an adorable five year old girl would make him uncomfortable?

Chris and I had woken up and were surprised to find Riley already awake trying to pour milk on her cereal bowl which ended up on us cleaning up the mess she had made. I was uncomfortable with the idea of Chris being so close to Riley but soon pushed away the feeling as I realized that Christopher wouldn’t hurt her. At least not anytime soon. I couldn’t help but compare Jay’s attitude towards Riley and Christopher’s totally different approach at her. While Jay was friendly and sweet, Christopher was distant and dry. I acted as if I were going to the bathroom but stopped halfway there and listened to their conversation without them knowing I was there. Riley left the dining room for a minute and came back with the doll I had recently bought her.

“Want to play?” She asked, holding her doll up high so Christopher could see. “She’s new!”

“No.”

Riley frowned, her eyes tearing up. “Yes you are!”

“Go away little girl.” He snapped.

Riley’s fake tears stopped and a glare fixed on her face. “I like Jay better!”

Christopher glared. “Jay has been around here?”

I walked in quickly, making sure Riley wouldn’t say anything else. “Riley why don’t you go to your room?”

She glared at Christopher one more time but left without another word.

I laughed at Christopher. “You’re not exactly a kid person.”

“Little kids are annoying.” He frowned, standing up. “Anyways, I have to go do something. Meet me tonight at eight?”

I smiled. “Sure. Where?”

“It’s a surprise. I’ll pick you up.”

I frowned. “I hate surprises.”

“You’ll love this one. I promise.” He said, walking towards the door with a grin on his face.

I sighed as I heard the door shut, indicating that he left.

I heard my phone beeping, instantly feeling guilty as I saw I had 10 unread messages. Five from Jay and 5 from Shay all asking where I was and if I was alright. I had almost forgotten about Jay.

“Jay are you okay? I’m so sorry for not calling back.” I said as he answered his phone.

“Are you sure you care?” He asked bitterly.

“I’m sorry, Jay. I was hanging out with Christopher.”

“Forgave him so easily? Didn’t he sleep with that Emily chick?”

Bitterness crept up on me again imagining Emily and Chris together. “I’m only doing this so we can catch him. Nothing else. If we were actually dating then I wouldn’t have forgiven him but I’m not. I have no choice but to forgive him.”

Jay was quiet for a bit. “Sorry, Rose. I was just a bit jealous. You didn’t even come back to see if I was alright. I thought you didn’t care.”

“Of course I cared but I couldn’t go back. Want to come by?”

“Yeah. I’ll be there in a few. I’m close by.”

“Okay.” I said before hanging up.

“Riley come over here!” I said loudly and sighed when I saw her. “Don’t mention Jay in front of Chris again, okay?”

She frowned. “I don’t like him. Is he your boyfriend?”

I bit my lip. “Not exactly. It’s hard to explain.”

“Well I don’t like him.” She whined.

“He’s going to be coming over a lot more often so don’t be mean.”

“Okay.” She said and I leaned down and kissed her cheek, smiling.

“You’re the best.”

“Can you play with me?” She asked.

I nodded. “What do you want to play?”

“Fashion show!” She gasped happily. Since Riley didn’t own an expensive game system like other kids did, she always made up a new game to play. Riley had the biggest imagination so she had a variety of games she would beg for me to play with her.

I laughed. “Alright. Fashion show it is.”

Riley smiled and grabbed my hand, leading me to my closet. “Let’s see…”

She picked out the dress that Tyra had bought me and gave me some sneakers that didn’t match with the dress at all. “Perfect!” She exclaimed, happy.

I quickly changed and put on the sneakers. “What now?”

“Makeup!”

I walked to the bathroom and grabbed my makeup bag along with a small mirror and walked back to the room. I put my makeup on the bed and Riley plopped down on the bed with a happy look on her face.

She dropped all of the makeup inside the makeup bag on the bed. “Close your eyes. It’ll be a surprise.”

I did as ordered and felt Riley put lipstick on my lips messily. After fifteen minutes of Riley putting makeup on my face, she finally told me to open my eyes.

Riley was holding up the small mirror with a proud look on her face. “Good?”

My eyes widened at what I was seeing but I couldn’t help but laugh. She had put red lipstick on my lips but she managed to overdo it and I looked like I had big, red Angelina Jolie lips. There was a trace of lipstick going all the way to my chin and horrible blue eye shadow that covered my eyelid and brow.

“This is really good, Riley.” I lied, laughing.

Her face lit up. “Your turn!”

“Close your eyes.” I ordered.

She did as was told and closed her eyes. I grabbed a pink lipstick and applied it to her cheeks in circles, making her look like a clown. When I put down the pink lipstick, I grabbed a peach colored lipstick and applied it to her lips, making her have Angelina Jolie lips like she did to me. After applying black eye shadow all over her lid and her brow I told her to open her eyes.

She opened her eyes and let out a loud giggle. “I look weird!”

“Hey, I worked hard on that!” I said, pretending to be upset.

“Well you need practice.” She replied bluntly, laughing.

The door bell and I went to open it, seeing Jay. “Hey.”

He took one look at me and laughed. “What happened to you this time?”

I could only imagine how I looked to him. I was wearing a white sundress with sneakers and looked like a clown with makeup caked on my face.

“I was playing with Riley.” I explained, laughing.

Riley ran to Jay and hugged him when she saw him. “Hi Jay.”

Jay smiled and hugged her tightly before letting her go. “Hi, Riles.”

Riles?

“Wanna play?” She asked excitedly.

He nodded, laughing. “Of course!”

She led him to my room and he sat on my bed. “Let me do your makeup.”

Jay was about to protest but Riley was already putting pink lipstick on his lips. When Riley was done she ordered Jay to open his eyes. Jay’s makeup was similar to mine except the lipstick was pink not red.

Jay looked horrified. “Oh god.”

I laughed out loud, seeing Jay’s expression. “You don’t make a good looking girl, Jay.”

I grabbed my old thick camera that instantly printed out the picture as soon as the picture was taken.

“Let’s take a picture.” I commented, laughing at Jay.

The three of us sat on the bed and posed. I took the picture with the camera and waited for the picture to print. I took out the picture and blew on it. We looked crazy in the picture. Jay looked like a drag queen and Riley and I looked like clowns. “I’m keeping this picture.” I laughed.

“Let’s take another one so I can keep one.” Jay said, running a hand through his hair. “I want to remember this.”

We posed the same way again and repeated the process. I handed Jay the picture, smiling.

“Want to stay and watch a movie?” I asked him.

“Let’s wipe off this ridiculous makeup first though.” He laughed.

I will be uploading very soon and you will find out what Christopher's surprise will be! Any guesses?
