Chapter 17 – Revealed

Harriet’s breaths were ragged and her pace was becoming uneven. I smiled to myself knowing that soon she would have to stop running, meaning I would win.

"You...know," she puffed between breath, "Lissa....would be.....able to....beat anyone." She stopped suddenly and bent over gasping.

"Harri, you really need to get in shape!"

"Excuse me, but the teacher never said run, I just wasn't prepared today."

True. For our PE class the teacher convinced my class to go on a walk around town, being me, I convinced Harriet to run, not walk. We were a hundred meters from the school; I stood there on the side of the road my hands on my hips, clicking my tongue impatiently.

She finally stood back up and we continued walking, when we got back to the school, we changed into our uniform and sat down outside waiting for the others.

"Have you been talking to Sally lately?" She asked, almost a whisper.

"Yes, I talked to her this morning, we all did."

She sighed and shook her head, "No. I mean have you talked about our...you know...power thingies, has she said anything about me?"

"No, why, what’s wrong?" Harriet jumped back up and started walking towards the rest of the campus, but I grabbed her arm and yanked her back down. "You must tell, what is it?” I said, my voice rose. Harriet glanced around to see if anyone heard, luckily we were the only ones there.

"God, Kiley, calm down. It’s nothing."

"I don't believe you Harriet, you and Sally have lots of little secrets." I sighed and sat up and headed back to the school, Harriet followed but stayed silent.

That afternoon we sat at the park eating chips, with way to much tomato sauce. Lissa sat as far away from me, I understood why, but I wasn't completely happy with her still angry at me.

"You know, lately I've been thinking about university," Harriet said clearing her throat.

"Where?" Sally and I asked at the same time.

"Well, I know I'm not the brightest person, but maybe overseas, or just at Sydney, they've go a really good medicine program."

"But, never mind," I said covering my face with my hands. I had always thought of us all staying together, being in the same city at least. Sally leaned over from the other side of the table and tugged at my hair. I looked up confused, but she just gave me a sympathetic smile, she thought the same thing.

"Harriet, that great you’re thinking about…the future, but medicine? That’s cheating, you know you can never use your powers," Sally said giving Harriet a stern gaze.

"I know, I know, I would never do that!" Harriet and Sally continued talking about University, which Sally was excited about. But here I was, all flustered because I still had no idea what I was going to do for my future. I looked sideways at Lissa, who had her eyes glued to her phone screen, probably Facebook, something that I had no interest in anymore, she didn’t seem to interested in our little conversation.

What was I going to do, when my best friends moved away, and I was still here, with nothing to do and this stupid power. I couldn't handle that. I couldn't do all that on my own.

"Listen guys, I got to go, I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" Lissa butted in, we all watched her get up and walk away from the park and up the main street. She didn't even look back. Sally shot up in her seat, knocking the empty packet of chips to the ground. Her eyes were tracing the path Lissa took away from us. Sally’s face turned hard, then slowly she sat back down and looked across the table at Harriet and I.

"You know, I'm not even going to ask," I said shaking my head.

"Good, because I wasn't going to tell you!" Sally replied mockingly, and smile on her face.

We didn't stay much longer, Sally headed home with her mum, and Harriet and I headed up the street towards her home. Harriet was so full up on soft drink that she practically skipped up the main street past the cafe, I took a quick glance inside and seated at a table was Lissa and her boyfriend, I groaned and kept walking. When we reached Harriet’s house, I didn't bother going inside. "I'll see you tomorrow, Harriet!"

I went down to the cafe for lunch the next day, something I rarely did because it was too much trouble. I got a milkshake and sat out the back in the sun. It was a nice day, and you defiantly tell summer was on the way, only a few weeks left of spring.

"Hey," a voice said waking me from my daydream; I looked up to see Sam staring down at me. "Do you mind?" He asked pointing to the seat opposite me, I shook my head and he sat down.

We talked for a while; I kept checking my watch making sure I wasn't late to school. I felt different talking to Sam, he wasn't like the others, they were always glaring and or getting really freaked out. Every time I was around him, I felt, what was it? Happier.

"I saw you in the park yesterday with your friends, you are always with them, and you must be close?"

"Yeah, we've all been friends for a long time-" I stopped talking when I felt a pounding in my head, I raised my hands to my temples and tried to massage them, but it didn't help.

"Are you alright?"

"Yeah, yeah, sorry, bit of a headache," I said smiling up at Sam who relaxed back into his chair.

"What time do you have to head back to school," he asked.

"Oh, about 10 minutes."

Then I felt it again, someone was in my head, not literally of course, but that was what it felt like. And for some strange reason, I was terrified. I had so many secrets, just waiting to be released.

I looked up at Sam who had his eyes on his hand which was resting on the table, he didn't blink, not once for the minute I was watching him, it scared me a little, but I couldn't concentrate while my head felt like it would explode.

"So what was your friend’s name, the one with the short hair?" Sam asked, still not looking at me.

"Oh, you must be talking about Harriet? Yeah, she’s my age, lives on the street above the main street.

"I don't think I've ever meet her."

"I could introduce you, at the end of term party, are you going?"

"Umm, probably," Sam replied, his voice suddenly seemed lighter and he looked up and smiled, I then noticed that his eyes were a light grey colour, I was about to comment on them when the bell on the door chimed we both looked up as Lissa and James entered; hand in hand. James eyes were on Sam and I, which made my stomach flip.

Then suddenly my headache got a thousand times worse, so bad it cause me to cower in my seat. This time it felt like a ...shield was in my head, pushing at the very corners of my brain, like my skull was expanding.

I gasped in pain, and shock, as the torture continued, I was completely oblivious to what was happening around me. I thought a hand touched my shoulder, but I couldn't be sure.

And then, my mind went blank, like nothing ever happening, I lifted my head up to look up at Same who was looking at James and Lissa. "I've got to go, Kiley. Bye." He stood up and headed for door, and I could have sworn he ran into James's shoulder as he passed by.

I then focused on James and Lissa who looked at me both shocked and disappointed. I opened my mouth to yell at them to leave, but couldn't be bothered, so I just left.

"Kiley, wait," Lissa pleaded and tried to reach for me.

"Get away," I spat.

That night I when to the basketball courts, they were lit up by huge lights, which seemed almost alien. It was just me and the echo of the ball hitting the ground. I kept bouncing it in time with my heat beat then every tenth beat I would shoot for the hoops.

"You know, you should the school team."

I stopped on the spot and turned around to see Harriet, standing there in her schools clothes; late night studying.

"How did you know I was here?

"Skills," she said while dropping her bag to the ground then she outstretched her arm for the ball, I lightly threw it towards her and she aimed for the hoop, it missed easily.

"You suck!"

"Shudup, I haven't played in years!"

I laughed at her pronunciation of shut up, running after the escaping ball.

"You know, I don't want to seem really bitchy but, you should be nicer to Lissa."

"Oh, here we go!" I scoffed and threw the ball to the ground, receiving a disapproving look from Harriet.

"Didn't mean to offend you, I was just saying. But every time you roll your eyes at the mention of James isn’t very nice."

"Can't help it I don't trust him."

"One day you will," she said picking her bag back up, and waved shyly. "I'll see you tomorrow Kiley. Don't do anything stupid in the meantime."

I shrugged my shoulders and waved back at her.

I didn't stay much longer, and by the time I got picked up to go home, I could hardly walk.

When I arrived home there was a message on the answering machine, I pressed play, the first one was a message for my aunt, and the second was from Sally.

“Kiley! Pick up! Its Harriet, she gone missing.”
