"Alice."
"Wake up."
Two hands grab my shoulders and shake me from my slumber.
The sleep glues my eyes together. My throat is dry and cracked like the Sahara desert. After the initial panic from being jumbled from my sleep is over, I look over to the culprit.
Just as I expected.
Lilly.
"You were talking again." Seriousness laced in her frown.
"Are you sure you weren't just imagining it?"
"No, you are mumbling. I can't exactly catch what you are saying though. What were you dreaming about?"
"Him." I whisper and dig my fingers into the blankets wrapped around me.
"It's been three months. You'll grow out of it soon Alice."
"It's so hard." My voice wavers.
"He musta' been one heck of a man." Lilly wraps her arms around me.
I swallow the knot in my throat and rub my eyes.
"You'll get better. Ive just gotta help."
Oh no.
She's got a plan.
I look over at the clock and to my surprise its 10:34 am.
I smell the burnt bacon drifting from downstairs.
"Want some breakfast?" Lilly laughs.
I pull an all famous fake grin on my face and start my trip down the stairs. When I get to the kitchen mom is shuffling around in her robe, attempting to cook breakfast. Pots and pans are scattered around the kitchen.
"Oh, this is the fifth pack of bacon! And the sixth pan!" Mom fusses and slaps more bacon on the pan.
"Let's just go to Ihop." I suggest and Lilly nods.
"Ok."
I'm supprized she didn't argue.
But then again I'm not.
Mom takes off her robe and has pajamas underneath.
"Pajamas?" I ask.
They both nod their heads.
Mom grabs her keys and we hurry out of the door. Me and Lilly sit in the back seats as usual. Mom starts the car and turns the radio on.
104.5, of course. Our local pop channel. (A/n this is actually the pop channel where I live, but don't look it up and stalk me ;) )
Irresistible by fall out boy comes on and my mom is jamming.
She rolls down the windows and sings to the people in the car next to us.
"It's ir-resisti-iiiiib-le ohhhhhhh yeah!" She points and the elderly couple and they turn their heads.
She continues, "your second hand smoke! Second hand smoke!".
As soon as the light flashes green they teleport away, leaving me and Lilly in a laughing fit.
Which leaves me thinking, I'm laughing. I'm having a good time.
Maybe I will get over this.
The song goes off and the man from the station begins talking.
"we're giving away tickets to see Twenty One Pilots and fall out boy in their one time only concert! But only to the first caller!"
Lilly pulls out her phone so fast I couldn't blink.
She pulls it up to ear and shoves a finger in her mouth.
"Hello?" She questions.
"Hello?" The radio says in unison.
"Hi! You mind telling me your name?"
"Lilly and Alice!" She squeals like a hungry gerbil.
"Lilly, Alice? YOU'RE THE WINNER!"
Mom screams and throws her fist out of the window.
"You guys! We're on the radio!" Mom screams and the radio echos back.
"Oh my god." I mumble.
"Well listen, we have your number and we'll call back with more information."
"Thank you!"
It shut off and music started playing again.
"Omg what just happened?" Mom says as she pulls into Ihop and parks.
I smile at the use of her 'teenage' slang.
"We won tickets." Lilly mutters still in shock.
"Well don't just sit here! PANCAKES HERE WE COME!" Mom jumps out and slams her door.
"Hey wait up!"
We make our way to the door and all eyes are on us.
I mean we are wearing pajamas and house slippers.
A boy with golden blonde locks and a small black lip ring approaches us.
"How many?"
"Three."
The man walks us over to the table and we sit down.
"What drinks would you like today?"
"Three ojs."
"Ok, I'll be right back." He smiles I'm my direction.
Lilly nudges me.
"What?" I whisper.
"He was totally checking you out!" She whispers back.
"He was probably trying to figure out what I'm wearing!"
"You just watch." She winks at me.
He walks back to the table, three orange juices in hand.
"Here you go." He places mine in front of me, then Lilly, and then mom.
He pulls out a pad and clicks the pin on his forehead.
"What would you like to eat?"
"Triple stack with strawberry syrup and extra whipped cream." Lilly says like she lives here.
"I'll have the same." I say.
"Make that three." Mom smiles.
"Ok, I'll be right back!"
As soon as he leaves mom begins to speak, "I'm so glad you both were able to graduate early. I think you should have some time off. When I'm not at work we can hang out!".
Oh lord.
What did we get ourselves into
At least I'm a highschool graduate.
The boy walks back to us and sets our plates down.
"Thanks." We all smile and say our thanks.
"No problem."
He winks in my direction.
Swoon.
"So, are you excited for the concert?"
"YEAH!" Lilly nearly jumps from her seat.
"Eh not really."
"WHY?"
Mom and Lilly nearly scream at me.
"Just because, I've barely gotten over Ohio. I don't need to worry about getting crushed in a mosh pit."
"Your going Alice." Mom stares at me with a devilish grin.
I just ignore her and dig in, eating all three pancakes in a record time of 5 minutes.
"Are we all done?" Mom pats her mouth with a napkin and stands up.
"Yeah."
We all make our way to the counter. The boy with the lip ring waits patiently on mom to find her card.
While he waits he grabs an old receipt and scribbles something down.
Mom pays and we begin to walk back to the car.
"Wait!"
I turn around and the boy is by my side.
He hands me a slip of paper and walks away.
