Chapter Thirty-Three- Oh, The Irony

I sighed before slowly removing the gun out of the picture, setting it down on the cold concrete below us. This was going to be worth a shot.

"It's okay, Four."

I looked into his chocolate brown eyes, wondering if there was any part of his consciousness left within him. Right then all I could see was hate, betrayal, and a hint of sadness in his hues.

My hand went to rub his cheek, gradually pulling him closer to me, and ultimately led to him pressing the gun to my head harder.

"I adore you. It's okay."

A cackle sounded throughout the room after I said those words, "You really think that's going to work?" Jeanine questioned, her heels clicking with the ground.

"The simulation is one of the strongest ones we have been able to produce in such a short amount of time. There is no way that petty love will get through it in order to wake his conscious. Face it Adelaide, he's gone, and when he wakes he will live with dread when he realizes that he killed the one he started to love, by 'accident'."

I saw a glimpse of her black heels as they walked around, examining what her 'beauty' was now capable of causing. Destruction.

"Four, kill her. As for the rest of you, I want a report on how many Divergents have been caught..."

Her voice drowned out as I focused on Four, waiting for him to fulfill Jeanine's order.

I saw his pointer finger slowly pull on the trigger, "If you're listening, I just want to say one more thing: don't regret this."

I took one last look at him before I shut my eyes, waiting to feel the short pain before the bullet impacted my skull and pierced my brain.

It never came.

All I felt was someone's breath grazing my cheek.

I don't know what happened at that moment, but it was like he snapped out of the daze he was in. From what I could infer, his Divergence was able to break through the simulation he was experiencing. I wish I could do that.

"Addy," he whispered as my eyes opened, only for his to widen at the gun he had pressed to my forehead.

I smiled, and lightly kissed his nose quickly,"On three?"

"Yeah...three!" He said, instantly getting up and swinging the gun in a different direction and shooting one of the guards that was standing by.

As for me, I grabbed my gun and ran towards the computers, making a break to find out a way to shut down the system Dauntless was under. Most of the scientists had ran out when they heard gunfire, afraid for their own life. However, I didn't get fairly far due to the fact that one of Max's henchmen was one of the guards. And let me tell you, this guy was probably six foot six, and had a muscular build like Eric, except bigger.

Yeah, not fun. That fight alone was going to leave a mural of bruises for a long time.

Due to his massive size, brute force would be his motive right away. So, I went with the easier solution: shoot his foot.

That took him down easily, and while he reacted by immediately going towards his foot, I kneed him in the head, only to hear the thump that resulted from his body hitting the floor.

I looked at all of the monitors, clueless of how any of this technology worked.

"She got away," I heard Four say.

"Yeah, well, that's not the priority at the moment. Right now, we need to figure out how to shut this down and prevent any more of this hell from happening. And I don't know how any of this shit works!"

"Here let me see," Four said, standing right next to me as he gazed at the digital pictures.

All I could look at one of the videos that showed a section in Abnegation that was currently still in motion. I don't know who it was, but I saw a brown-haired, tall Dauntless member shove an old couple to the ground, who were begging for their lives. It wasn't enough to break the trance that the man was in, hence resulting in his shooting both in a quick manner. I stared, and I couldn't help but notice that while their bodies lied lifeless on the ground, their hands were intertwined. It was, in a way, grotesquely beautiful.

"Dammit, we need a code."

I sharply turned to see that Four had pulled up a bar that required a password.

"Is it numbers or letters?"

"It could be both. There is a hint though, and it relates to Divergents."

"Well, I guess you're just gonna have to start inputting what it could be."

Not giving it a second thought, he started to type in anything that it could have been, relating from the five factions to hateful wording.

He grumbled and groaned while I looked around the room, trying to see if there was some sort of clue that could lead us in the right direction. Little did we both know that the answer was right under our nose.

"Four, wait!"

"What is it?"

"Look at all of these computers," I said, stepping back to see all of them.

He examined them along with me, "Adelaide, we don-"

"There is a tally on how many Abnegation members have been killed."

"Do you think that-"

"Yes," I said walking over to each computer. "The password is constantly changing. The only way we are going to figure out the password is guessing how many people from Abnegation have been killed thus far. If we get it right, it should shut down the system automatically."

As I glanced at each computer and taking in all of the numbers, I caught Four's sweet smile plastered on his face.

"What?"

He shook his head, "Nothing."

I rolled my eyes while smiling before calculating what the number was going to jump up to.

"Ready?"

"Yeah!"

"Type: 86. But don't submit yet."

"Why?"
"Because we have to wait until the 86th Abnegation official is dead."

Both of us stared at the screens intently as the Abnegation citizens were lined up against a grey wall, while a Dauntless member stood in front of them with their guns ready to fire.

"Ready....Aim..." I heard one of the leaders say through the built in speakers.

"Now!"

The sound of gunfire and a click intermingled through the air, leaving a pleasant aura to present itself.

Getting out of the compound was a lot easier than when I had to get in. The only thing anyone could hear were the quick footsteps coming from our feet. It didn't take us long to arrive at the train tracks just in time to see a train heading the direction towards Amity.

"Adelaide! Four!"

We turned our heads to see some familiar heads pop out from the first train car.

I smiled, "You got them!"

Four and I started running alongside the track to catch up to the first car of the train that they were currently occupying. Just before the train would pass us up, I grabbed Lucas's hand, who hoisted me up into the train car, only to be met with the warm smile of my lover seconds later.

"You made it!" Tris exclaimed as she stood in between Lucas and a boy with brown hair.

I smiled, "We sure did!"

"Did you happen to shutdown the system?"

I nodded happily, earning some happy expressions from everyone else.

"I'm so glad you're here," I said to Lucas.

He smiled, "Good job, Popper."

I smiled, and walked towards Four, who was looking out of the open car door.

"You okay?" I asked.

He nodded, "Yeah, it's just a little awkward."

"Why?"

"You see the old man Peter is holding?"

I turned around to see Peter, the asshole, holding onto an older man with brown hair. He was wearing Abnegation clothing in which was tattered and dirty. He was breathing heavily, holding onto Peter for dear life.

"What about him?" I said while intertwining my hands with Four's.

He leaned in close to my ear, "He's my dad."

I nodded in shock, "Oh."

He stiffly nodded, "Yeah."

That was all he mustered up to say to me about that topic. I guess they don't have the best past. But, I didn't press the matter.

"How's your wound?"

I sighed, "I'm starting to feel a little bit of the pain, but it's nothing major. That rejuvenating serum Eric gave me definitely worked."

Both of us were silent as the train kept its course, taking us in the direction of Amity.

However, as we stood I couldn't help but notice a shine in one of the windows of the abandoned building we were passing by. Leaning forward slightly, I tried to concentrate on that certain spot. I could tell what is was, and I acted fast. I pushed Four out of the way, sending him to the floor of the train car. And I was met by a cold bullet piercing my chest.

"Addy!" was the last word I heard before I hit the ground, unaware of what was happening around me. All I could feel was the blood pooling out of the new wound, taking my life with it one second at a time.
