"Aline Penhallow?"
"Yeah. Se transfered last week. I have to go. I love you :*"
"Okay. See ya. Love you too."
"The least he could do is remember!"
"Listen lil sis, as much as I love talking to you, duty calls"
Jace, I really hope Sebastian's right.
~Chapter 5~
Jace
"How in the world are we going to do this?" Aline complained, looking at the blank demon anatomy on the book.
"Ever heard if the internet?" Isabelle asked, pounding her pencil on the desk.
"Not sure if it'll show up though," Alec answered, grabbing his laptop from his bag.
"So Jace, I heard Clary got expelled," Aline said, making the said shadowhunter stop what he was doing.
"Yeah she was," he answered without looking at her. He hated when people brought that up.
"But isn't she, like, the only daughter of the best shadowhunters ever?" The Asian shadownhunter said.
Jace's hand clenched the pen he was holding and he fought the urge to snap at Aline.
"Yeah but that doesn't mean she automatically inherits them like that. Need I remind you that she only found out she was one of us and that we exist only a year ago?" It took all of his willpower to sound calm.
"Yeah I know.. But-"
♪Almost.. Almost is never eno-♪
"Hello?" Jace answered the call without even looking at the caller ID.
"Hey Jace," a lovingly familiar voice greeted him on the other line, making him smile.
"Clary! Why'd you call?" He asked. He loved hearing from her, it's just that he was kind of busy. They had an exan tomorrow ad as much as he loves her, he didn't want to flunk it just to talk to her.
There was a pause before the redhead answered.
"Umm. Nothing. I was just heading to bed and I thought I'd call to..." She trailed off, making Jace wonder if she was okay.
"Clary, are you okay? You'd call to what?" He asked.
"Nothing. I'd call to tell you good night. I love you," Clary answered.
"Oh. Okay. Good night. I love you too," he answered before ending the call.
Jace looked up to see that almost everyone in the room was looking at him.
"What?" The severely confused blonde asked his companions.
"Nothing. We were just expecting you to be sweeter. You know, considering what day it is today," Isabelle said, twirling her pencil in her hand.
"Day? What day? What are you talking about?" He was confused as ever. What on earth were these people talking about? Last time he checked, it was no one's birthday, especially not Clary's.
"See, this is why I don't want to date anyone blonde," Izzy said, sticking out her thumb in Jace's direction as she said "blonde".
"Can someone just spare me the-"
"Idiot. It's your monthsary," Simon said, leaning on the wall.
Idiot. It's your monthsary.
It felt like a demon just jumped at him from behind with his guard down.
"Oh by the Angel, I am so screwed."
~In Japan~
Sebastian pulled the seraph blade out of the last demon with a look of disgust.
"I swear, these things just never learn," he muttered to himself.
"Well what do you expect? They are mindless... Things," Kazuma answered, walking up to the silver haired boy.
"Things? Seriously? Out of all names and terms, you go with things? Your vocabulary has plummeted to an all time low," a dark haired teenager with green eyes and glasses said, walking up to the duo.
"And the brainiac opens his mouth," the brown-haired Japanese rolled his eyes, making Sebastian chuckle.
"By the angel, I wish you'd just shut up, Dylan," Kazuma gave the dark haired boy a glare.
"Now now boys, I don't want my apprentices to beat each other up," Valentine made his way towards the three teenagers, effectively making them stop their bickering.
"Sebastian," he called, catching the said teen's attention.
"Hhm?"
"See if you can contact your sister," he told him, making his son brighten up.
"Sure thing," he gladly replied.
"Matte," (wait) Dylan said, raising his hand in a way that a student would when he wanted to ask a question. "You have a sister?"
"WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US?!" Kazuma inctedulously asked, gripping his silver haired comrade by the shoulder as he shook him.
Valentine just chuckled at the boys' behavior.
Clarissa, if only you were here.
~A week later~
Clary
The wind was cold against her skin as she walked towards their apartment. She'd gotten over the whole Jace forgetting their monthsary thing and she just went out to get more art supplies.
"It's been a looong day without you my friend. And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again," she turned around when she heard a really familiar voice singing and smiled when she found her dark haired bestfriend leaning by a tree.
"Hey Si," she greeted him as he made his way towards her and took what she was carrying.
"And people say chivalry is dead," the redhead giggled.
"So what have you been doing for the past 3 weeks?" He asked. With his classes, he rarely sees her anymore.
"You know, sulking, talking to Sebastian. The usual," Clary shrugged.
"Jace asked me to tell you to meet him at Taki's," Simon told her.
"Really? What for?"
"Beats me," the vampire shrugged as they continued walking, leaving Clary and her curiousity.
Jace
He sat on one of the booths at Taki's waiting and dreading to see a certain redhead walk through the doors.
He felt someone lay a hand on his shoulder and turned around and saw Izzy.
"Calm down," the dark haired shadowhunter told her blonde brother.
"Remind me why you're here again?" He asked. Not meaning to sound rude but as far as he planned, it was just gonna be him and Clary. Though Izzy being there sort of took some of the anxiety away.
"Listen, everything's gonna be okay, alright? What you're doing is..."
"It's gonna be for her own good. You can't protect her from everything forever, you know. And let's face it, she won't last long in our world. She couldn't even survive school, much less the real deal. She has to either leave our world willingly, or be pushed out of it. Either way, it is for her own good. Capich Jace? Jace?"
"Jace! Snap out of it!!" He was awakened from his trance-like state and saw Izzy infront of him, snapping her fingers.
"Y-yeah? Sorry, zoned-out there for a bit," he apologized as his golden eyes continued to scan the diner.
Aline had talked to him weeks before about keeping Clary safe by not involving her in all of this. The demon hunting, the demon attacks, the inevitable stench of death lurking at every corner, then it dawned on him. He really couldn't protect her from everything. But knowing Clary, she wouldn't want him to keep protecting her; she would want to protect herself and be able to do the same to him. She was selfless and was willing to do anything for the ones she loves. But then again, so was he.
"Have you ever stopped and wondered what's keeping her here? Why she keeps trying even though it's just not for her?" Aline had asked him. At that time, he just looked at her with a confused expession, making her sigh and bury her face in her hands..
"God, I thought you'd be smarter," she had muttered to herself but still loud enough for the blonde shadowhunter to hear. "The only thing keeping her here... Is you. Are you listening? Jace? Jace!"
"Jace!" Isabelle slammed her hand on the table, finally snapping her adoptive brother of his trance.
"Y-yeah? Sorry about that... Again," he gave his adoptive sister a very rare sheepish smile as he scratched the back of his neck.
Isabelle rolled her eyes at his actions before something outside caught her attention.
"Just remember... It's for her," she said, before using her head to gesture to the door where a certain redhead with firey curls had just walked in.
Jace followed her gaze and his heart stopped at the sight. She was beautiful. Really beautiful and he wanted to back out of what he was about to do, but..
"You can't protect her from everything forever, you know"
He looked over at Isabelle, who was keeping a concerned eye on him.
"I know you probably have somewhere else to be, but would you mind staying? I'm not really sure if I can do this on my own," he asked with pleading eyes.
The darkhaired shadowhunter just gave her brother a smile and nodded just as Clary made her way to their booth.
Jace sighed. "By the Angel, I know I'm going to regret this"
