You sat at the kitchen table watching as your 3 youngest children eat a snack and talked about their day at school. Your oldest son, James, was in the kitchen looking through the fridge. “James, What are you looking for? You’ve been looking in the fridge for 10 minutes already.” You say getting off your chair and walking towards him.
“I’m just looking for something to eat. That’s all.” You starred at him for a minute then finally spoke. “Okay. You know if you need to tell me something, tell me. Or just to talk to me.”
“I Would Mom, Don’t worry.” He said giving you a small smile. “Wait a minute, Didn’t you have football practice after school today?” You ask him as he started to walk out of the kitchen. He turned around then said, “Yeah. I Wasn’t feeling up for it so I didn’t go today. And, I’d rather be here helping you with everything since…” James started but got teary eyed. Your husband Liam, was in the Army. It had to be the hardest thing in the world for your family.
Everyone missed him more than anything. Liam and you had actually meet at a café. He had spilt tea all over you when he got his order. Ever since then, you two have been in love. A year after that you two got married and that’s when you found out you were pregnant with your now, 16, year old son. “It’s okay James. Don’t cry baby.” You say walking closer to him and pulling him into a hug before he started to cry into your shoulder.
“Mommy?” You heard behind you. You pulled away from James and looked behind you too see your 5 year old daughter standing in the doorway. “Yes Sweetheart?” You ask bending down to her level. “What’s wrong?” “Oh Sweets. James and Mommy were just upset because daddy isn’t here and we miss him.” “Daddy said last time we talked to him that he’d be home soon. Remember?” “Yeah. I Remember. But that was a long time ago baby girl.”
“Mommmmmmmmmy, I’m done eating!” Your 4 year old son said. “Okay Sweets. Come on, How about I go put on Toy Story and we can all watch it together?” You say standing up straight again and going to the dining room to collect the now dirty dishes. “Mommy, What’s Toy… Story?” Your youngest son asked. “Oh Niall, You have so much to learn.” You say before bringing the plates to the kitchen then walking into the living room and putting in the first Toy Story.
“James, Are you going to come and watch the movie?” You call out not knowing where your son was. “No thanks Mom.” he said before you heard footsteps going up the stairs.
*Liam’s P.O.V.*
He was sitting at his cot writing another letter to his wife and kids. He missed them so much. He had watched yet another one of his mates get killed yesterday. That mate was married and had a new born baby. Everytime he now thinks of him, he thinks of his family. “Payne!” Someone yelled running into the tent Liam was in. Liam looked up from the letter he was writing but put it away still looking at his mate standing before him.
“Yes?” “Milford said that he needs to see you.” He got up from his cot and started running towards main base. When Liam got there he knocked on the door then heard a “Come In.” He opened the door then walked inside and sat down in one of the two chairs in front of his desk. “Mr. Payne, Someone wants to talk to you here. You’re not in trouble at all. This seemed urgent so, come sit here and you come talk.” Milford said standing up then walking out of his office closing the door behind him.
Liam stood up and walked around the desk and sat down in the chair. “Dad.” James said into the webcam. “James, My Boy! How are you?” Liam said cheering up a little. “I Miss you dad.” James said starting to cry. “I Miss you too. Are you taking care of you Mum?” Liam said trying his best not to cry, but failing.
“Of course I am. She’s watching Toy Story with the little ones.” “My Favourite,” Liam said smiling to himself. “Why Aren’t you with them?” “Uh, I Kind of… Don’t watch it… without you there.” “James, Your mother probably is downstairs crying her eyes out. We always watched Toy Story whenever I was home. I know it’s hard… But in 2 weeks I get to come home. How’s football going for you?” Liam asked and with that, James cheered up a lot and they spent a while talking to each other.
*(Y/N) P.O.V.*
2 Weeks Later
“Mommy, When’s daddy getting home?” Your youngest, Niall, Asked again for the 2nd time in the past 5 minutes. “He’ll be here any minute Niall.” You say watching your kids run around the front lawn. 5 minutes later a car pulled up to your house. A guy dressed in an army uniform got out of the car… But it wasn’t Liam. You watched as the guy got closer and closer to the porch You were sitting on. “Mrs. Payne?” The guy asked as he stood in front of you. “Yes… Who are you?” “Mrs. Payne, I’m one of Liam’s many friends from base.”
“Is there something wrong with Liam?” You asked standing up. “I’m Sorry Mrs. Payne,” The Boy started but you interrupted. “Please, Call me (Y/N).” “Of course… Well, (Y/N), Liam was a great man. He… He loved his Kids so much… But He loved you the most. He’s just… In a different place now. He’ll always be here with you. He would always say a silent sorry once he killed someone. He was just trying to protect everyone but himself. This is all the letters he’s gotten, written, and some that he never sent. There’s also a letter explaining what happened. I’m So Sorry again (Y/N).” The boy said handing over the duffle bag that was on his shoulder.
“Tha-tha-thank-you.” You said trying your best not to cry in front of this stranger. The stranger left you there starring off into space. A million things raced through your head right now. Liam Was gone. What would you tell the kids? How would you tell them?
You sat back down on the porch, pulled your knees up to your chest and started to cry.
“Mom… Is Daddy coming back home?” You heard. You looked up and say your Daughter, Marissa, standing there with tears ready to fall from her eyes. “I’m sorry Sweetheart.” You say pulling her closer to you and sitting her into your lap. She put her tiny little arms around your neck and sat there crying with you. “James? Where’s daddy?” Your 4 year old, Patrick, asked. “Patrick, Daddy’s….. Not coming back home.” James tried to explain as best as he could. The rest of your kids walked over and sat around you and Marissa and wrapped their arms around you two and cried with you. The only man you’ve ever loved… Gone… Forever.
