Melly moved more to her left and looked at me. I took the hint, removed my dress shoes, and sat right next to her as the nurse approached us with the baby in her arms, who is wailing for his mother. I took a sharp breath as Melly took the baby from her arms which caused him to instantly stop crying and moved closer to her body. I just stared at the small child in awed, not believing that I made such a beautiful person. Melly and I made him with our love. I knew losing my virginity to Melly would change my life, but I didn't expect it to change this much. I never expected anything this big to come. I just want to cry and kiss him all over because of all the emotions that I have inside of me for this little creature.
"He's a very healthy baby. He has no problems so far and he weighs about seven and a half. It's an average weight of most newborns." The nurse informed.
"Hello scrumptious! Welcome to this world." Melly said to our son. I can tell that she fell in love with him and it hasn't even a minute that she hold him. I can't blame her as I fell in love with him too. "It's so nice to finally meet you. And on my birthday. Well, our birthday now. It's fine. I wouldn't mind sharing my birthday with someone as adorable as you. You're the greatest gift I can ever have."
I just stayed quiet. I didn't know what to say. Even if I did, it would probably be stupid. I felt a wee bit uncomfortable with the fact that my seventeen year old girlfriend, now fiance, is holding the baby that she has been carrying for nine months. Words cannot describe how I feel right now, all I know that every minute of this is leaving me breathless. I want to touch him, but I'm afraid if I do that he would break. I'm afraid that this may all be a dream that I don't want to get out of.
Thank God for Melly as she continues to speak to the nameless boy, "I'm your mommy. I may not be the perfect mother, heck, I don't know what I'm doing, but I will try to be the best mother that I can be. I promise everything will eventually work out for all of us. It already is, but it could always be better. And I also promise that no matter what happens, I will love you forever and always."
She laid a kiss on the baby's forehead, who just squirmed in her arms. His tiny, pale hands grasped his mother's finger, making giggles fall out of her lips. He seemed to enjoy to be able move her finger around, before he let out a big yawn.
"Oh, oh, ohh." She said. He squirms around to be comfortable and snuggles closer to her. I grin as she laid another kissed his forehead. "I love you." I heard her whispered. She looks me and asked the inevitable question, "Wanna hold him?"
"Um, I don't know. He seems really comfortable with you. I don't want to make him upset by moving him away from you." I said, hesitating. I don't want to make him cry. I only held Mia a few times, and while she was okay with me holding her, I'm not so sure about my son.
"He'll be fine. You're his dad. He will love you." She assured me with a warm smile that I bet not even a hurricane brewing up in the middle of nowhere can take away.
I felt my stomach fall at the word 'dad'. This is all surreal to me. I cannot believe that I am a father to a newborn child at seventeen it's crazy. I simply cannot. It's hard to process that in my mind. I thought it over, before I finally made my decision.
"Okay, but only because I really want to know him." I said. I took another sharp breath as Melly handed the baby to me. Seeing him up close I can see that he looks a lot like me. Of course, he has a lot of Mel's facial structure, but it's like looking at a mirror when I see him. "Hey, sport."
The baby isn't crying right now, so far so good.
"Talk to him, you're really good at it." She told me.
I glanced at her, before returning my attention to my baby. I want to say something, but I don't know what. Thankfully, I didn't have to say anything yet since the nurse cleared our throats to capture our attention. How long was she standing there?
"What would you guys like to name your baby?" She asked, pulling out a birth certificate from behind her.
Oh shit. The naming is what Melly and I has bickered about for the past nine months and we still haven't come to an agreement with one.
"Can you give us a moment, please?" Melly speaks.
The nurse nodded her head and left the room to ourselves. We sat in an awkward silent for a moment, none of us know what to say.
Then a thought came to mind, "Mel, I swear if you name him freakin' Nathan."
Hoe don't do it.
"Oh, calm down. I won't name him that." Melly said, cringing at the thought. "It was nice for a while, but it faded. Why don't you name him and I give him a middle name?"
"Daniel." I said without a second thought. I liked the name. It's simple and it sounds cool if you call him, 'Danny'. "We can call him, 'Danny', for short."
"Are you sure he'll like it?" She asked, raising her eyebrows in worry.
"If he hates it, he can always change his name at eighteen." I reminded her as I look down at the infant.
"Well, I think it's a cute name. I think Luke would be a nice middle name." She said, "That way, you kind of have a chance to say, "Luke, I am your father.""
I bursted out laughing as she said that, instantly regretting it as the baby began to cry from the loud noise. I shushed him and gently rocked him back to peace. Danny settled down and snuggled closer to me. I pushed back his straight, black hair a little before looking back at my fiance, who was glaring at me.
"Nice." She said, sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
"Whatever. But yes, Daniel Luke Parker is a nice name, right?" I said, getting back on topic.
"Definitely. He's so cute." She said, putting her finger between his hand again and wiggling it. "He looks just like you, Derek."
"So does that mean I'm cute too?" I asked, laughing again, much quieter this time.
"You know you are, big boy." Melly said, kissing my cheek.
"Yeah, Danny. We will have a lot of fun together. I will teach you all the incredible things you need to know, when you're older. I will teach you how to do your hair and play the guitar. I won mommy that way, so why not pass it to you?" I said to my son, who's just looking at me with wonder with in his eyes. He probably doesn't understand what I'm saying, but I'm fine with it. I'll repeat it when he's older.
"He's lying and that should alert you." Melly told him, glaring at me.
I chuckled at her response. She's probably right as I don't know how I won her in the first place, but her reaction is still funny.
Danny started to cry, making me feel a bit uneasy. "Oh, what's wrong, buddy?" I said in a baby voice.
"Now look at what you've done." Mel teased. Ouch. "Looks like somebody's hungry." I handed Danny back to Melly. "Oh, shh, shh. It's okay, baby."
Melly almost lifted her gown, when the nurse came back in with the certificate attached to her hand to help her.
"Now you're baby is hungry. So what I'm going to do now is teach you how to breastfeed." The nurse said, "Do you want him in the room?"
I looked at her to see if she's okay with it. I don't mind, unless she minds. I won't do anything, but I don't want her to feel uncomfortable.
"Sure, I don't mind." She said.
Yay! I get to watch the show. I stare at the two women as the nurse explained to her what to do. I didn't listen as I was too focused on her boobs coming out into the night. This is really weird, considering what it's used for.
So I had to joke about it.
"He's a natural like his father." I whispered in her ear, causing her to smack my arm. "Ow!" I exclaimed, rubbing my arm.
I'm not sorry. It was worth to ruin the tension in this mood. After Danny was done eating, the nurse showed Melly how to burp him. The little guy finally rested once he was gassed out. The nurse wrote his name down and we signed the paper. He has a legal personality now.
"Would you guys like your first family picture?" The nurse said, who has a camera in her hand.
Melly and I exchanged glances, mentally checking with the other.
"Please?" We said, giving her both our phones. We smiled as she took a photo on each three devices with our baby.
"Thank you so much, Miss." Melly said as we got our phones back.
"No problem. Want me to get your family to see the baby?" She asked.
"Yes, please." Melly said said.
The nurse left to retrieve our folks. There was a really quiet movie between us, until the nurse came back in with Mom, Dad, John, Mia and one other person that I am more than happy to see.
"Hi, dad." I greeted the older man with a warm smile on my face.
Short chapter. Lots of dialogue. I know, but I promise to make it up to you guys soon.
