"we were stuck out in your car. you were rubbing both my hands, chewing on a candy bar."
-----------
I swear the boy just appeared out of thin air. His ebony hair was shining dully and his slightly crooked teeth glinted. What surprised me the most was the bright yellow shirt that draped over his torso.
My ears burned and my stomach painfully twisted when I realized what he had just witnessed. Fumbling, I finally managed to get on my feet. I then proceeded to wait for an eternity for him to stop laughing.
"Done?" My question echoed in the vacant space.
He let loose a few more chuckles and gave me a small head nod.
"How did you even get in here?" I was sure that the door was locked.
"Wait, how do you know where I work? Why are you here?" To my knowledge I didn't mention anything about being employed. Hell, Orion and I had only officially met two days ago.
"I picked the lock, it's a secret, and I figured we could go get some ice cream or something." He spoke lazily and gave me a dazzling smile.
In that moment I realized that this human would always surprise me. What sane person would want ice cream on a cold night in October. Furthermore why did he want to get ice cream with me? Nonetheless I agreed and finished closing up rather quickly.
Fifteen minutes later we stood inside of Midnight Snacks, it was a small ice cream parlor that was open until midnight, hence the name.
I was appalled when Orion order vanilla, just plain vanilla. No chocolate syrup or brownie bits not even rainbow sprinkles. I ended up getting triple chocolate ice cream covered with gummy worms. I also asked for a side of yellow sprinkles which I then poured all over Orion's ice cream.
"You've tainted it!" He hissed, glaring over.
"Correction, I made it better." I mumbled out through my mouthful of gummy worms and chocolate.
Orion grunted and proceeded to throw away his "tainted" ice cream then produced another bowl of pure vanilla ice cream.
I rolled my eyes and continued happily munching on my bowl of chocolatey goodness whilst studying Orion.
He took slow meticulous bites and seemed to hold each mouthful of ice cream for the same amount of seconds before swallowing. His foot seemed to be tapping a slow steady beat and his whole being was jittery. I stored the new information for later analysis.
"Alright," Orion announced when we'd finished our ice cream. "What I'm about to ask you may seem completely cliché and incredibly cheesy, you've been warned."
"Proceed," I nodded at him.
"Do you want to play twenty questions?" He flinched like the sentence physically hurt him.
I plastered a look of horror on my face and slowly shook my head in disappointment.
"And here I thought you were different, I'm not sure I can ever be in your presence again." My voice had a fake hint of sadness; and I made my way out of our booth and into the cold autumn night.
"Wait!" Orion cried out dramatically. He got on his knees and peered up at me.
"Oh Nyx great night goddess, forgive me for asking the unmentionable question. Could you find it in your heart to forgive a insignificant human, such as myself." Orion pleaded with me.
I pretend to mull over his words. "I'll accept your apology, only under one condition."
"Anything," Orion said standing up from the concrete.
"Rather than the unmentionable game, I have something better in mind."
And that's how Orion and I ended up in a cell at 4:00 a.m. on a Wednesday morning.
