Chapter Eleven

“So,” Jordan said, weaving his fingers through mine, “are you busy this Friday?”

            “Nope.  Why?”

“Because I was thinking... maybe we could go on a date?” he suggested.

            “Just the two of us?”

“Just the two of us,” he confirmed.

            I smiled.  “I’d like that.”

“Mum!” I called out when I walked into the house.

“In here sweetie,” called mum’s voice from the kitchen.

I skipped into the room and sat on the kitchen counter.  “Jordan asked me on a date this Friday.  Can I go?”

“Of course sweetie,” she said smiling.

I grinned.  I was glad to see mum finally smiling.  Ever since Rick stormed out of the house she’s been nothing but sad.  He hadn’t returned since.

“I don’t know what I’ll wear though.  Will you help me?” I asked her.

            “Of course I will.”

We smiled at each other and she got back to cooking.

            “Hello city girl.”

I rolled my eyes, “Hello Oliver.”

            “What’s up with you lately?”

“Not much, been pretty bored.  But I have a date with Jordan on Friday.”  I smiled at him like the Cheshire cat.

            “That’s great for you.”

“Well what’s up with you lately?”

“Same old same old... hey I have a seriously life threatening question to ask you.”

I mocked a gasp.  “No way!  Like seriously seriously life threatening,” I said sarcastically.

“Oh em gee, it’s like no way, oh my god, seriously life threatening,” Oliver played along.

“Oh em gee!  No fricken way.  That is like, oh my god, like so serious!”

            “I know right?”

I giggled and said, “So what’s the question?”

He sighed, getting back to the serious matter.  “Well you know how my ex ran away when the army came to town?”

            I nodded.

“What if, at the end of the year, I joined the army to get out of town?”

I was silent for a moment till I said, “But what if you’re sent to war?”

Oliver shrugged.  “Then I’m sent to war.  But it’s a way of getting out, I’d be serving good to my country, and I’ll be getting food and everything till I save up some money.”

“Well as long as you don’t die, then it’s a great plan.”

He smiled.  “You really think so?”

“Totes,” I said in a mocking girly voice.

Oliver rolled his eyes at me but smiled.

It reached Friday and I went home straight away after school.

“Welcome home,” mum said when I walked inside.

I smiled at her.  “Well I’m going to have a shower then you can help me pick out my clothes.  Jordan said he’s picking me up at six.”

“Okay then.  Hurry, you have three hours.”

I gasped.  “No way!  Three hours?  I’ll never make it!”

Mum rolled her eyes, “Have a shower.”

I snickered and ran off to the bathroom.

“You look beautiful tonight,” Jordan said when I got into his car.

            Blushing I replied, “Thank you.”

            “Anytime.”

“Wait.... saying I look beautiful tonight means I don’t any other day?”

Jordan rolled his eyes.  “You look beautiful every day.”

“Then why did you say tonight?”

“You love to annoy me, hey?”

“You know it.”  I grinned at him and again, Jordan rolled his eyes.

“So where are you taking me?” I asked him

            “To the lake,” he replied.

“The place where we had our first date?”

            “Of course.”

            “Did you bring sushi?”

            “No, something else this time.”

“Oh thank god!  I’m sick of sushi.”

            “You whine a lot.”

“I noticed.  So what will we be eating?”

            “Food.”

            “What kind of food?”

            “Edible food.”

I gave him a flat look.

“Does this food have a name?”

“Yes.  It’s also called a meal.”

            “What is this meal called?”

            “Food.”

I growled at him.  “You’re mean.”

            He chuckled.

“You’re beautiful, you know that?” Jordan said as he watched me.

I looked him in the eyes and blushed.  “Yeah right.”

            “You are.  Don’t doubt it.”

We had already eaten our dinner which turned out to be spaghetti bolognaise, his mum’s own recipe.

            “Hey Cecelia...” Jordan started.

“Yeah?” I said, turning to look at him.

“I―um... I don’t know if you think it’s the right time for me to say this but I have to tell you.”

            “Tell me what?”

            “I love you.”

I was lost for words.  Did he just say.. no way... I was hearing things... But he totally just said.

“In most cases they say it back but I get if you don’t feel that way...”

“Oh, sorry.  I’m just lost for words.”

            “Oh...”

“I didn’t think you felt that way about me...”

            “Well I do.”

Blushing I mumbled, “But I’m not sure how I feel about you yet.  Like, I really really like you... but falling in love is the last thing I want to do.”

            “Why?”

“Because Jordan, you know I’m leaving eventually.”

            “You wouldn’t stay for me?”

            I shook my head.

He didn’t talk for five minutes so I knew I had to say something.

“If you like... don’t want to go out with me anymore I’d understand,” I mumbled.

“I know I shouldn’t.  But I just can’t break up with you.  I’ve already fallen in love.”

“Oh Jordan,” I exclaimed and hugged him.

            “I wish you wouldn’t leave.”

“I know... But I have to.  I don’t belong here.  I’m a city girl.  Any future I have is in the city, where I belong.  I don’t know how to work a farm or run a shop.  I’m more of a technology person.  I like writing, reading... I want to be an author... And I’d rather not do that here.”

            “I understand.”

We sat there hugging each other for a while till Jordan whispered, “Do you think you could ever love me?”

“Yeah... I think I could.  I’m pretty close to it.  I just... don’t want to hurt myself like that.”

“I wish you would allow yourself to love me.”

“But Jordan... it will just hurt both of us.”

“I know... but we should make every moment we have now count, right?”

I thought about it for a while then finally said, “Yeah, we should.”

“I had a good time tonight,” I told Jordan as he stopped at my house.

“Even though I had to ruin it?” he replied.

“You didn’t ruin it.  You only made it better.”  I showed him a smile so he knew I meant it.

“That’s good.  Do you mind if I say it again?”

            “Not at all.”

He leaned in and kissed me softly.  When he broke away he leaned his forehead against mine and whispered, “I love you.”

I smiled and pulled him back in for a kiss.

Shutting the door I smiled largely.

“Mum, I’m home!” I called out.

            But there was no reply.

            “Mum?” I called out again.

            She still didn’t reply.

            Now I was worried.

Taking in deep breaths I quickly walked through the house till I reached her room.

“Mum?” I whispered as I pushed open her door.

I stepped back in shot to see her body laying on the floor, covered in blood.

            “Oh no... Mum!” I shrieked.

“Hello Cecelia,” came a voice from behind me.
