I ran down the halls trying to find room 113. Tears were streaming down my face and my heart was pounding out of my chest. I came upon the room and slammed the door open. There he laid, hooked up to multiple machines.
• 8 hours earlier •
"C'mon Jess hurry up!" JJ yelled through the bathroom door of mine and Lox's hotel room.
I quickly slide on my light washed shorts and pulled my black loose short sleeve shirt that said "Stilinski" bolded on the back. It was from one of my favorite tv shows, Teen Wolf.
I pulled my black Vans on and walked out of the bathroom. "Finally! Let's go Jess!" JJ exclaimed.
All of the guys, Lox and I were going to walk around town today.
I grabbed my phone and slide it in my back pocket and walked out the door with JJ.
We walked down to the lobby and saw all the boys and Lox sitting on the couch. They all jumped up and said "Finally." together.
"Yeah yeah. Shut up." I slurred. We all started walking out the doors and took a left.
• 30 minutes later •
We were all laughing walking along the beach. I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket. I grabbed it and saw my mom was calling me. I took a step away from the group and answered my phone.
"Hi mama! How are you?" I asked into the phone. "Jess you need to get home now! Get on an airplane and come home!" She frantically yelled through the phone.
"W-what's wrong?" I asked confused. "It's Colton! You need to get home. He needs you." My heart dropped. Colton. He needs me. I dropped my phone, and I went crashing down to the ground.
"Jess!" A faint voice yelled my name. My vision was blurry and my eyes closed shut. I felt my body being lifted and someone slightly shaking me. "Jess! Jess wake up! Wake up!" Someone yelled.
My eyes slowly opened and saw Matthew holding me close to him. I jumped out of his arms and started running back to the hotel.
"Jess slow down!" They all said running after me. Matthew caught ahold of my hand and held me still. "What's going on?" He asked sincerely. "It's Colton. He needs me. I need to go." I said tugging my hand out of his grasp and running off once again.
I ran all the way back to the hotel and ran into my room. "Jess what do you think your doing? You can go alone. MagCon will be done tomorrow and I'll bring you home then." JJ said.
"Tomorrow! Colton needs me now. I'm leaving whether you like it or not." I spit out at him.
I threw my clothes and bathroom stuff in my suitcase. And threw the rest of my stuff in my carry on.
"Jess your not leaving!" JJ said getting angry. I turned around and glared at him. He took a small step back. But I took a step forward. "If you think your stopping me from seeing my friend that is struggling with cancer, you have another thing coming towards you." I said pushing him away.
I grabbed my suitcase and brought everything down to the lobby. I called out for a taxi and I saw one coming my way. They all came over to me and said "Don't do this. You shouldn't go alone. Just wait a day." And many more things.
"Stop telling me what to do. I'm going to see my friend and that's final." With that I threw my suitcase in the car and the driver drove off.
• 90 minutes later •
I just boarded the plane to go back to Omaha.
I buckled my seat belt and leaned back. What if when I got there I was too late? I knew I shouldn't have left. I should have stayed with him. Colton needs me.
There was a lady at the front of the plane dressed nice in a blue pencil skirt and a white button up talking through the microphone about the safety vests under our seats.
I didn't really pay attention, it's not like I cared. It's not like I haven't already flew in an airplane before.
I plugged my head phones in and turned up my music.
Colton didn't leave my mind for one second. Tears dropped onto my cheek as I thought of the possibilities. I couldn't loose my best friend. Not now. Not ever. I slowly started to drift off as my music played in the background.
• 4 hours later •
"Colton! Where is he? Where is Colton?" I yelled at the very petit women at front desk of the hospital.
"Ma'am I need you to calm down. What's his last name." She tilted her glasses down to look at me.
"Colton, Colton Miller." I said out of breath. The lady typed in his name on her computer and looked up at me. "Room 113."
I was running down the hall. I see nurses come running past me. "Go! Go! Go! We might loose him!" The chanted. That's when I lost it.
I ran down the halls trying to find room 113. Tears were streaming down my face and my heart was pounding out of my chest. I came upon the room and slammed the door open. There he laid. His lifeless body.
Doctors came rushing in and pushed me back. "NO! NO! He's my best friend let me in!" I yelled trying to push past the doctors.
"Ma'am you need to take a step back." One sternly said pushed me back.
"Okay. Okay." I whispered taking a step back falling to the floor. The door slammed shut and I was left on the ground crying senseless.
• 3 hours later •
I was sitting in the waiting room to hear something, anything about Colton. But nothing came. I've probably lost at least 3 pounds from how much I've cried.
I've been talking with Colton's family for the past 3 hours. You can just see how worried his parents are. But his sister, she looks so terrified. An 8 year old girl shouldn't have to loose their older brother. It's unfair.
"It's okay Bailey, he'll pull through. He's tough like that. I bet right when he wakes up, he'll be looking for your bright blue eyes." I soothed pulling her into a hug.
Bailey and Colton have always been very close. I mean JJ and I were close, but they are even closer. Unlike most big brothers, he protects her nonstop and is never mean to her. He would do anything for her.
Bailey and I were also close, sometimes I'd just go over to Colton's house to spend time with Bailey. She's probably the cutest little girl I've ever met. She would just break if Colton was taken away so soon.
I pulled Bailey onto my lap and just hugged her. I could feels Baileys tears dampen my shoulder but it didn't matter. "I'm scared Jess." She choked out. "It's okay to be scared Bailey. Colton will be okay. Don't worry." I soothed as I ran my fingers through her hair.
"Family and friends of Colton Miller." Someone spoke aloud. I quickly jumped up and waited for the news. Bailey clutched into my shirt and hide her face in my shirt.
"We had to perform some major surgery on Colton. Things aren't looking good. I'm sorry to tell you all, but Colton isn't gonna make it that much longer. You might want to go say your goodbyes now.
Mrs. Miller dropped down to the ground crying. Mr. Miller picked her up and set her down on the chair. "My baby! I can't loose him John I just can't!" She cried into her husbands chest.
I didn't say anything, I just set Bailey on the ground and walked down the hall into Colton's room.
I opened the door slowly and saw Colton facing the other way, maybe he was sleeping.
I walked over to the other side of the bed and sat down. I grabbed Colton's hand and held it.
His eyes popped open and looked up at me. "Jess, you're here." He softly whispered. "Mhmm, I'm here." I said whipping my tears away. "Don't cry. Jess I have to tell you something." He whispered. "What is it?" I asked. "Jess I need to tell you this before- before my time comes-" "Don't say that. You're gonna be okay. You're gonna be okay." I said letting my tears falls.
"Jess you don't know that. I just want to tell you before anything happens that I'm not ready for. Jess I-" he sighed. "Just tell me Colton." I said.
"Jess we've been friends forever right? And I wouldn't want to ruin that in anyway. So what in trying to tell you is-" he was cut off by...
