S2 E13
begin the begin
"OH, MY GOD!" Maddison yells, pulling her sweater from Doc's mouth, who wouldn't let it go. "What do you even need this for?!"
A meow comes from the bed, and both of them freeze. Doc immediately turns to the tiny kitten, and Maddison throws the sweater on him.
"NO, NO, NO!" Maddison yells, as she jumps up and grabs the tiny kitten. "IZZIE!" She yells, running to the bathroom with Bagel. "IZZIE!"
Izzie opens the door, just for Maddison to run in and shuts the door before Doc could get it.
Maddison slides down to sit, letting out a breath and putting the kitten down, who walks a little unaware of the danger she was just in.
"I think getting a dog was a bad idea." Izzie nods, making Maddison look up at her as she grabs the coffee mug Izzie offered her.
"You think?" Maddison asks the girl, as Izzie stands with her back to the door, holding a coffee mug.
Doc's bark and growl sounds comes with George's yell.
"God, holy, ow. I said down, back..." He yells, with sounds of footsteps running. "IZZIE! IZZIE! Incoming!"
Izzie grabs the door knob, opening it just as George runs in and they both shut the door. Izzie hands George another coffee mug and they all let out a breath.
"You know, I'm thinking about coloring my hair. Maybe red." Izzie tells them.
"I'm thinking highlights." Maddison nods, sipping coffee and holding Bagel in the other hand.
"Yeah. Red's good. I'm thinking about cutting mine." George adds.
"Yeah? You look good shorter." Izzie tells him.
"You think?" George asks, as Doc's barking stops and they hear Meredith's voice.
They all look confused, and slowly and carefully open the door.
"What a good dog? Who's mommy's good boy?" Meredith coos, rubbing Doc's head, shaking his paw. "Silly. Yes, I know. You're a good boy. You're such a good boy." The other three look at that in disbelief, as Meredith turns to them. "What are you guys doing in there? We're going to be late."
"We need to talk about the dog." George tells her.
"Yeah, Bagel has does nothing to him." Maddison hugs the cat. "At least Pudding treats her with the love and respect she deserves."
"That's not a dog. It's a hyena, escaped from the zoo dressed in dog clothing." Izzie adds.
"Whatever! I don't chew up his clothes." George nods, ranting. "I don't urinate on his bed. I don't try to mount him from behind!"
"People, he's our dog. We love our dog. He loves us." Meredith replies, patting him and the leaves. But, as soon as she leaves, Doc turns to the three and barks.
"He tries to mount you from behind?" Izzie asks George.
"Tries to." George replies, and Doc barks again, making George whisper. "Tries to."
"Oh, I am so not leaving Bagel anywhere around him." Maddison tells them.
MADDISON LETS DOWN THE little kitten, and Pudding immediately starts to lick her.
"See, now that's a compassionate dog!" Maddison points at him. "You're such a good boy, Pudding." Maddison rubs the dog's head, who barks happily. "Aren't you? Yes, you are! Yes, you are!"
This makes Liam let out a laugh, as he walks over with a tumblr filled with coffee, handing it to Maddison.
"He's been raised around kids." Liam tells her, as she takes the tumblr, kissing him.
"Thanks." Maddison smiles, then looks at her watch. "Oh, shit, I have rounds! I gotta go."
"I'll see you at the hospital." Liam tells her, as she rushes out.
"Yeah, thanks for letting Bagel stay!" Maddison yells back, and Liam chuckles.
"LISTEN UP PEOPLE." The Chief says, standing in the middle of the stairs. "New Year, new rules or should I say New Year and we will be enforcing the rules mandated by the residency review committee. There were too many mistakes made last year. Fatigue played too big a role. Exceeding 80 hours per week will not be tolerated."
"Does that mean we actually get to have a life?" George asks.
"I think so." Izzie nods.
"You have a life?" Maddison asks George, surprised, sipping her coffee.
"Sullivan, you were on-call for 28 hours, leave when you hit 30." Richard continues. "Grey, you were here to 2am last night, see you at noon."
"I get to go? Free time?" Meredith asks, surprised.
"Run before he changes his mind." Alex tells her, and she walks away.
"Oh, and people our nurses are gonna have to work extra hours to compensate so treat them well. Cranky nurses don't do us any good." The Chief finishes, and everyone walks away.
"Well, maybe you can cheer them up." Izzie tells Alex, making Maddison and Izzie chuckles.
"You know what?" Izzie stops. "My New Year's resolution was to let it go, and I am. I have... let it go. I apologize."
"You do?" George asks, amazed.
"I do." Izzie nods.
"How'd your test go?" Maddison asks.
"I feel pretty good about it but I won't know for a few days." Alex replies.
"Well, we're all pulling for you." Izzie tells him.
"We are?" George asks.
"We are." Izzie nods.
"DENNY DUQUETTE." BAILEY TELLS them, as they all walk into the room, minus Meredith and Cristina.
"Hey, Dr. Bailey." Denny smiles.
"I hope seeing you here means that they finally found you a heart." Bailey says.
"No offense, doctor, but I'm not a big fan of hospitals. It takes something pretty special to get me in here." Denny replies.
"What do we know about Mr. Duquette?" Bailey asks Izzie.
"Capricorn, single, loves to travel and cook." Denny answers, smiling at Izzie.
"Denny, be quiet." Bailey says. "Let her show off."
"Denny Duquette, 36." Izzie presents, smiling. "Admitted today for a heart transplant necessitated by a viral-cardiomyopathy."
"Hmm, and what does that mean?" Bailey asks.
"That his heart is unable to fill and pump blood normally." Izzie answers.
"Good." Bailey nods. "Denny, this is Dr. Stevens. She'll be tending to your private surgery."
"So, I guess I'll be seeing you around, Dr. Stevens." Denny grins at her.
Izzie smiles back, as Alex looks unimpressed and they all walk out.
"No one enforced an 80 hour work week when I was an intern." Bailey tells them, while Izzie and Alex walk a little behind. "110, 120 hours suited me just fine. I learned more because I worked more."
"Right!" Maddison nods. "I don't wanna sit at home. What am I supposed to do? Have a life?"
"Well, at least this way you get a rest before you have the baby." George tells Bailey. "I mean being that pregnant, keeping up this pace."
"Are you saying I look tired, O'Malley?" Bailey raises an eyebrow, stopping.
"No, not tired, no. You look fresh, spry. You glow. What?" George rants, and looks down at his watch. "Stop now?"
"O'Malley, go do an intake on Addison Shepherd's patient." Bailey tells him, looking unamused, and the boy walks away, as Bailey turns to the remaining three.
"You do glow." Izzie nods.
"Like the moon." Alex adds.
"And you can spend the day in the pit, Karev." Bailey says.
"I'm keeping my mouth shut." Maddison shrugs.
"And, you can accompany me to retrieve the heart, Sloan." Bailey tells her.
"Yes." Maddison cheers, as she follows after the resident. "And I was kidding earlier, you do glow like the moon."
"Do you wanna go to the pit, too?" Bailey asks.
"Nope." Maddison replies.
BAILEY PICKS UP THE container for transporting the heart, when Cristina creeps up behind her and Maddison.
"Uh, hi." She greets. "I heard that you were going to Twin Falls, Idaho. I've never been."
"You reached 80 hours?" Maddison smirks.
"Technically." Cristina shrugs.
"You're off work, Cristina." Bailey tells her. "Go enjoy your day."
Cristina takes Bailey's coat from Maddison and helps Bailey put it on.
"I'll enjoy my day if I can help retrieve a heart. Promise." Cristina tells her.
Bailey just shakes her head.
"It's a nice coat." Cristina tells her.
"You're hopeless." Maddison nods to Cristina.
