thanks for the memories
MADDISON SAT ON A bench outside the hospital exit, pulling her jacket around her because of the cold.
Liam walks by inside the hospital and looks at the intern sitting in the cold. He pauses, then walks off.
After a few moments, a thick overcoat drops around Maddison's shoulders, making her look up and see Liam.
"Hey." He smiles, and walks around.
"Hi." She gives him a half smile, as he sits down next to her.
"What are you doing out in the cold?" He asks the intern.
"Bailey threw me out, because I sneezed in the ER." Maddison tells him, making Liam raise an eyebrow. "Okay, she didn't throw me out, she told me to go home."
"So, why are you sitting here?" Liam asks.
"Because!" Maddison sighs. "Because, it's stupid thanksgiving! It's the season of festivals! Now, it's stupid thanksgiving, then it'll be annoying Christmas , and then, before you know it, it'll be irritating new years."
"I'm guessing, you're not big on holidays." Liam gives her a small smile, making her sigh.
"I'm not big on celebrations." Maddison tells him.
"Really?" Liam replies, sarcastically, making her eyes narrow.
"I don't get why people like these stupid holidays so much." Maddison grumbles.
"Well, it's an excuse to party, drink and dance." Liam shrugs. "People like excuses to get together with family and friends."
Maddison turns away from him, making Liam's eyebrows furrow.
"Yeah..." She whispers, a sad look in her eyes. She gets up, handing the coat back to him. "Thanks for the coat."
She starts to walk in, but Liam's eyebrows furrow.
"Maddison?" He questions, standing up.
"I'll, uh, I'll talk to you later." She gives him a half hearted smile.
"HEY, DEREK." MADDISON CALLS out, now out of her scrubs.
Derek, who was talking to Liam, turns around and looks at Maddison standing next to the nurse's station. He gives Liam a small smile and excuses himself, as Liam watches them in curiosity.
"How are you doing, Maddy?" Derek asks, looking at the girl in pity.
"Don't give me that look." Maddison rolls her eyes.
"What look?" Derek asks.
"You know the look, Der." Maddison tells him, then sighs. "Can I spend some time at your trailer? I can't possibly go home, since Izzie has probably converted out house to a thanksgiving buffet by now."
"Yeah." Derek nods, pulling out the keys. "You sure you don't wanna talk?"
"When do I ever?" Maddison replies, taking the keys and walking away.
Derek sighs, walking back to Liam.
"So, where were we?" He questions the other attending.
"Is there a reason Maddison hates the holidays?" Liam asks, making Derek look a bit surprised.
"Uhh..." Derek trails off, unsure.
"Oh, sorry." Liam shakes his head. "I overstepped-"
"No, no." Derek shakes his head. "Its, uh... It's just, during holidays, everywhere you see, people are celebrating with their families. And, her, um, her parents were not really around, you know. She just doesn't like the holiday because of that."
"Oh." Liam lets out.
"Yeah, me, Addison and her brother have tried to get her to talk about it, but she hates that." Derek tells him.
"Yeah, I noticed." Liam nods, then he looks up at Derek. "Just one more question."
Derek nods.
MADDISON WALKS UP TO Derek's trailer, looking around the scenery and appreciating the quite. As she walks up to the door, she hears a soft voice, making her turn around.
"What?" She whispers, but it's all silent around. Confused, she turns to the door, but now hears a well defined 'meow'. She looks down, finding a light fur covered goofball kitten. "Heyyyyy." She coos, crouching down, and petting the cat. "Where did you come from?" The cat meows again, rubbing her head on Maddison's hand.
Maddison looks around to find an owner or the cat's mother, but there is literally no one else there.
She looks back down at the cat.
MADDISON LAID ON THE bed, the kitten snuggling on her chest, as a laptop played 27 dresses in front of her.
She gets startled by the sound of a knock on the trailer.
"Who could that be?" She whispers to the kitten, who just tilts her head.
Maddison gets up and slowly opens the door, getting surprised by the person standing in front of her.
"Liam?" She opens the door fully. "What are you doing here?"
"I know you said you hate thanksgiving or any kind of holiday, but I just cannot let you be alone." He tells her. "At first I thought I would cook something for the two of us, but Grey told me that you all were planning to have thanksgiving dinner at her house, so I came to pick you up." Maddison was about to say something, but he cuts her off. "It's a good thing. To have friends to celebrate the holidays with you, and Stevens, she is making an effort for all of you, so don't like it as much as you do, you should come and not sit here all alone on thanksgiving, because you have friends who would show up for you." He sighs, and looks at the girl. "You have me who would show up for you."
Liam gets caught by surprise at Maddison's smile.
"Let's go to the dinner." Maddison tells him.
"What?" Liam asks, and Maddison rolls her eyes. "Seriously?"
"Yeah." The girl nods, as there's a meowing sound and the two of them look down to see the cat walking around Maddison's feet. Liam looks up at her with a look. "She was all alone!"
"You are so..." Liam trails off, as Maddison gives him a bright smile, making him shake his head. "Come on, let's go."
"Oh, but we have to stop by the hospital." Maddison tells him, going in to grab her shoes. "I need to grab my bag."
"It's alright, we'll wait for you in the car." Liam replies, making Maddison confused.
"We?" She questions, turning around to see the cat perched up on Liam's shoulder and him brushing her.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING here?" Meredith asks Cristina, who walks by her in the locker room.
Maddison walks out from the other side, holding her bag which she got from her locker.
"What are you both doing here?" She asks, as George walks in.
"Oh. This is beyond bad." George lets out, as the four look at each other.
"HEY." ALEX CALLS OUT to Meredith, who was watching the interns and Burke celebrate thanksgiving from outside the house.
"Hey." Meredith replies.
"You going inside?" He asks.
"Nah, you go ahead." Meredith tells him.
"You sure?" Alex asks.
"Yeah. Go make her happy." Meredith tells him.
"Yeah." Alex nods, and walks in.
Meredith watches as he walks in and hugs Izzie. She turns back when she hears footsteps again, and looks at Liam and Maddison walking up, the latter was holding the cat in her arms.
They both stop, looking at Meredith. She gives Maddison a small smiles.
Maddison walks up to her, and kisses her cheek.
"Thanksgiving sucks, babe." Maddison tells her, making Meredith chuckle.
"It sure does, Maddy." She replies. "You got a cat."
"I got a cat." Maddison smiles, and it makes Meredith smile.
"I'm happy for you, Maddy." Meredith replies, then nods to the door. "Go ahead."
"Yeah." Maddison nods.
"Happy thanksgiving, Grey." Liam tells her, as Maddison joins him at the door.
"Happy thanksgiving." Meredith nods, and they walk in, joining the celebrations.
