The Boeuf

Some Chapel near MCAS Miramar, San Diego, California, early February.

The air crackled with unspoken tension, thicker than the wedding cake after an unfortunate fruit explosion. Beads of sweat formed on Shinichi's brow, not from the sake's warmth, but from the sheer presence of two men who commanded the room. Shohei Ohtani, a baseball Adonis with a smile that could melt glaciers, stood next to Shintaro Fujinami, the stoic samurai of the mound whose gaze held the intensity of a winter blizzard.

Shinichi, a hopeless romantic at heart, couldn't help but be swept away by the drama. He adored his job as an HR representative, but even the juiciest gossip paled compared to the epic rivalry unfolding before him. Ohtani and Fujinami were like star-crossed lovers in a bygone era, locked in a timeless duel. Their history, a legendary saga in hushed tones, stretched back to their high school days, when they were two comets blazing across the baseball sky, both vying for the coveted top spot at the Spring and Summer Koshien.

One, a whirlwind of effortless power and flamboyant grace. The other, the epitome of quiet control, a metronome of precision. Every game they played was a silent ballet, a dance of talent and unspoken emotions. Ohtani, a peacock in motion, his throws fueled by raw passion. Fujinami, a stoic wolf, his every pitch a testament to unwavering focus.

It began as a gentle breeze, then a media hurricane. Their contrasting personalities, Osaka versus Hokkaido, fueled the flames. Ohtani, the golden boy, leading his team to international glory, while Fujinami's path seemed to take a different turn. The tabloids reveled in the narrative, painting them as rivals vying not just for baseball supremacy, but for the heart of a stunning celebrity. Even after the woman in question chose another path, the fire between them continued to simmer.

And here was Shinichi, a mere mortal caught in the eye of the storm. Ohtani's smile, usually charming, seemed laced with a hint of hidden steel. Fujinami's glacial expression remained unchanged. Shinichi felt like a lone violinist attempting a love ballad amidst a thundering rock concert, hoping the music wouldn't be entirely drowned out.

Yet, amidst the whirlwind, a peculiar beauty emerged. The unexpected encounters, the simmering tension, the larger-than-life personas – it was a story waiting to be written. These were men who transcended the ordinary, leaving even an average man like Shinichi feeling like a mere sapling compared to their towering redwoods.

It was his wife, the short-yet-buxom Hana Uzaki, now with her BFF/ second cousin, Chizuru Mizuhara. Chizuru was held pretty long at the checkpoint as her husband, Kazuya Kinoshita, is a former military personnel.

Entangled Hearts and Swinging Bats: Love Beyond the Rivalry

Chizuru sipped her sake, her eyes narrowed as they sledovali (Czech word for "followed") the tense interaction between Ohtani and Fujinami across the room. Hana, ever the observer, noticed the glint of mischief in Chizuru's gaze.

Hana (tentatively): "Chizu-chan, don't you think it's a bit... sad? All this animosity between them."

Chizuru (scoffs): "Sad? Hana-chan, it's glorious! A rivalry of epic proportions, a clash of titans! Think about the headlines, the drama, the..."

Hana (interrupting gently): "But Chizu-chan, wouldn't it be better if they just... reconciled? Imagine the good they could achieve together. A legendary pitcher duo, an inspiration to young athletes!"

Chizuru raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement flickering in her eyes.

Chizuru: "Now you sound like some wide-eyed anime protagonist, Hana-chan. The beauty lies in the conflict! Their contrasting styles, the constant one-upmanship, it fuels their greatness!"

Hana (pouts slightly): "But what about their happiness, Chizu-chan? Don't they deserve that too?"

Chizuru (sighs dramatically): "Happiness? In this dog-eat-dog world, Hana-chan? Sometimes, a little healthy competition is what keeps the fire burning. Besides, who knows, maybe they secretly thrive on this whole thing."

Hana (shakes her head, a small smile playing on her lips): "I still think a little nudge in the right direction wouldn't hurt. A friendly conversation, maybe even a strategically placed... 'accidental' bump during a photo session?"

Chizuru bursts out laughing, the sound echoing in the quiet corner.

Chizuru (wiping a mock tear): "Oh, Hana-chan, you and your matchmaking schemes! Though, I have to admit, the image of Ohtani and Fujinami tumbling over each other is rather amusing..."

Hana (blushes): "I-It's not about that! Just a little... encouragement towards a positive outcome."

Chizuru leans in, a conspiratorial glint in her eyes.

Chizuru (in a hushed tone): "Alright, alright. Maybe we can brainstorm a few 'accidental' scenarios. But remember, Hana-chan, even the best-laid plans can go hilariously awry. Just be prepared for some collateral damage... and maybe a lifetime supply of tissues for this 'clingy crybaby'."

Hana giggles, a spark of determination replacing her usual shyness.

Hana: "Leave that to me, Chizu-chan. Operation: Accidental Reconciliation is a go!"

The mischievous glint in Chizuru's eyes mirrored the fairy lights strung across the venue. Hana, ever the optimist, was already conjuring up elaborate scenarios for a "chance encounter" between Ohtani and Fujinami.

Just then, a tidal wave of vibrant energy swept past them. The unmistakable presence of the nine members of TWICE, many faces of the East Asian Pop Culture following, as their laughter and excited chatter filling the air, momentarily pushed the Ohtani-Fujinami drama out of focus.

Hana, usually reserved to a fault, found herself blurting out, "Oh my god, it's TWICE!" then pinching a random tall woman, none other than the enigmatic WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year Mamiko Tanaka, widely known as Mrs. Ohtani.

Chizuru, ever the pragmatist, simply offered a curt nod of acknowledgement from Mrs. Ohtani. However, as the girl group approached, a peculiar detail snagged on Chizuru's sharp mind.

"Wait a minute," she murmured, brow furrowing slightly. "Didn't Jeongyeon-ssi mention something about the Padres' top dogs picking up TWICE members?"

Hana, ever the hopeless romantic, gasped dramatically. "No biggie, I mean........wasn't Mina rumored to be seeing that same gridiron player......the Bosa guy?"

Their gazes locked, a bewildered confusion mirrored in each other's eyes. How, in the world, did they both possess such intimate knowledge about the TWICE members' love lives?

Just then, the ever-bubbly-yet-reserved Dahyun, spotting Chizuru and Hana, detached herself from the group and skipped towards them.

"Chizuru-san! Hana-chan! How lovely to see you both here!" she chirped, her smile radiating infectious energy.

Caught off guard, Chizuru stammered, "D-Dahyun-ssi, hello! Thank you."

Hana, ever the picture of composure (though her cheeks held a faint blush), managed a small smile. "Hello, Dahyun-ssi."

Dahyun, oblivious to their internal turmoil, tilted her head in innocent curiosity.

"So, are you two discussing the latest sporting gossip? Shohei-san and Shintaro-san certainly kept everyone on the edge of their seats this season! Even PD-nim loves the dynamic!"

A hush fell over the previously vibrant chatter. A collective gasp rippled through the crowd as a group of dazzling women sashayed into view. Heads whipped around, phones were raised – it was the entire ensemble of TWICE, the K-pop juggernaut, gracing the wedding reception with their presence, even the bride, Jeongyeon, seemed momentarily eclipsed by their star power.

Chizuru and Hana, however, remained curiously stoic. Used to the whirlwind of celebrities that often brushed against their world, their expressions held a hint of something else entirely – bewildered amusement. Some tall men, more than six feet and one inches tall, blocking their line-of-sight.

"Mina finally succumbed to the charms of NICK BOSA?" Chizuru muttered, more to herself than Hana. "Isn't that the same guy who just ended his engagement last month?"

Hana's brow furrowed in confusion. "Hold on, wasn't there a whole media frenzy about that, right before the Super Bowl?" Their hushed conversation, meant for each other's ears only, morphed into a bizarre whisper session as the remaining members of TWICE flitted past.

The absurdity of the situation wasn't lost on them. Here they were, strategizing a potentially history-making nudge in the Ohtani-Fujinami rivalry, which they was familiar with, while simultaneously being privy to the most intricate details of every TWICE member's love life, an unfamiliar territory. It was a bizarre juxtaposition that defied logic.

As if the universe was conspiring to heighten their bewilderment, the final member of the group to appear, Chaeyoung, with a mischievous glint in her eyes, rounded the corner. The shortest of the nine, she blends with ours truly two ladies.

"Hello ladies, you have a blast today. Dating Chase Young?" she quipped, amusement dancing in her voice. "You ladies don't seem like the biggest gridiron enthusiasts, so how'd you scoop that one? To be honest I just broken up with my boyfie around a year and a half ago."

Chizuru and Hana dissolved into full-blown laughter. The sheer unexpectedness of the situation, coupled with the weight of their bizarre knowledge, proved too much to contain.

"Let's just say Chae-ssi," Chizuru began, wiping a tear from her eye, "a certain Romano over there seems to have impeccable intel."

"Actually," Hana chimed in, still catching her breath, "we were just discussing..." She leaned closer, her voice dropping lower, "...the juiciest rumors surrounding a few specific members' love lives."

"Maybe," Hana continued between fits of laughter, "Operation: Accidental Reconciliation can wait another day. Right now, I think we have a much deeper K-Pop rabbit hole to explore."

The situation took another unexpected turn.

"Hold on," Hana blurted, her voice laced with amusement. "There's also, like, Jake Cronenworth who FaceTimed you and..." she trailed off, searching her memory.

"Luis somethin'," Chizuru finished, a sly grin spreading across her face.

Hana and Chizuru exchanged a look, the weight of their bizarre knowledge and the unexpected turn of events threatening to spill out. Just then, Luis Campusano, his voice thick with a Southern twang, nudged one of the TWICE members playfully.

"Y'all be careful now, these two Nihon couples got the inside scoop on everyone in the baseball gossip world. East Asia, seems like. Especially for So-chan. Remember that Hye-seong Kim guy? He is definitely pissed off atm."

A collective gasp escaped the group.

"Let's enjoy the party and hope that no one's a snitch about this whole shotgun wedding fracas," Jeongyeon then said through the MC's mic, in the most perfect British accent.

The secret was out for our main characters. In a worst time imagined, three something days before the World Baseball Classic opening game.

As they mingled among the guests, the echoes of their conversation with TWICE lingered in their minds like a persistent melody. Chizuru, with her keen wit and sharp tongue, couldn't shake off the memory of their encounter, while Hana, ever the romantic dreamer, found herself lost in a whirlwind of speculation about the secrets hidden beneath the glamorous facade of the entertainment industry.

"No snitch allowed.Who would have thought that Samurai Japan and Team Korea in a deep dislike with each other," Chizuru remarked with a wry smile, " thus making this unexpected invitation led to such a peculiar turn of events?"

Hana, her eyes sparkling with excitement, replied, "Indeed. It seems we have stumbled upon a mystery worthy of the most astute detective novels. No media presence? Huh?"

Their banter was interrupted by the arrival of their husbands, Kazuya and Shinichi, who had been drawn by the curious expressions on their wives' faces.

"Pray tell, what has captured your attention so thoroughly?" Kazuya inquired, his curiosity piqued by the enigmatic atmosphere that surrounded Chizuru and Hana.

Shinichi, ever the gallant gentleman, offered his arm to  Hana. "Perhaps a stroll in the moonlit garden will ease your troubled minds."

As they wandered through the garden, bathed in the soft glow of moonlight, Chizuru and Hana recounted their encounter with TWICE and the strange revelations that had unfolded.

"It seems," Chizuru mused, "that our lives have been inexplicably intertwined with the world of K-pop gossip. Who would have thought that such a trivial matter could hold such intrigue?"

Hana nodded in agreement, her thoughts drifting to the tantalizing secrets that lay hidden beneath the surface of the glittering entertainment industry. "Indeed, my dear Chizuru. It appears we have stumbled upon a tale of love, betrayal, and scandal worthy of the finest novels."

Their conversation was interrupted by the sudden appearance of a mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of the garden. With a flourish, he stepped forward, revealing himself to be none other than a renowned gossip columnist known for his scandalous exposés with the name... Balmaceda.

"Ah, my dear ladies," he exclaimed with a laughter in his face, "it seems fate has brought us together once again. I couldn't help but overhear your conversation, and I must say, it has piqued my curiosity."

Chizuru and Hana exchanged wary glances, unsure of what to make of this "unexpected encounter" to a family friend of them. But before they could respond, the gossip columnist continued with a mischievous grin.

"I believe," he said, "that you two may hold the key to unlocking the greatest scandal of our time – the secret love affairs of the most illustrious members of TWICE."

With that tantalizing revelation hanging in the air, Chizuru and Hana found themselves drawn into a world of intrigue and deception, where nothing was as it seemed and everyone had secrets to hide. And as they delved deeper into the labyrinth of K-pop gossip, they would discover that sometimes, the truth is stranger than fiction.

Mexico City Red Devils

A month later.

World Baseball Classic Nth Finals at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium, CDMX.

Japan at South Korea

The thin air of Mexico City crackled with an unusual energy as the long-awaited showdown between Ohtani against the Koreans commenced, their once-separated fates now intertwined as teammates once more. Amidst the deafening roar of the crowd, a complex tapestry of relationships unfurled beneath the surface, each thread weaving its own silent narrative. In the midst of it all, three couples grappled with the intricacies of love, their stories unfolding against the backdrop of professional baseball and unexpected encounters with celebrity.

Kazuya and Chizuru stood by the concession stand, feeling somewhat out of place amidst the Spanish-speaking crowd. Clutching Chizuru's hand tightly, Kazuya's gaze flitted between the empty pitcher's mound and a couple sharing two pairs of burritos.

It was Soichiro Yamazaki, the former Orix Buffaloes ace reliever, accompanied by his wife, Jeongyeon from the beloved K-pop group TWICE. Jeongyeon, her identity concealed beneath a mask and hoodie, her long hair braided intricately, remained unnoticed by the throngs of fans.

Chizuru's voice pierced through the clamor of the stadium. "Dear. It was always her."

The weight of her words hung heavily between them, laden with the history and emotions they shared. Jeongyeon's presence stirred memories of a past rivalry, one that had once consumed their lives and now threatened to resurface.

But amidst the tumult, Kazuya glimpsed a glimmer of hope – the possibility of love transcending the confines of competition. He saw in Soichiro and Jeongyeon a quiet resilience, a steadfastness that defied the chaos of the world around them.

"Perhaps," Kazuya mused, his grip tightening on Chizuru's hand, "there is more to their bond than meets the eye. Perhaps love can flourish even in the shadow of rivalry."

He cast a glance at the oblivious Jomboy Media crew, unaware of the drama unfolding before them. "They may not even close to understand the conflict," he chuckled softly, "but perhaps that is for the best."

Chizuru nodded in silent agreement, a newfound understanding dawning in her eyes. Their own love story, fraught with obstacles and uncertainties, mirrored the tumultuous terrain of the baseball diamond. The rivalry that had once divided them now seemed insignificant in the face of their shared bond.

Across the field, near the left-field foul line, Alexander Balmaceda and Maya Beier, our main couple's old friend and family from college days, sat side by side, their fingers intertwined as they watched the game unfold. Their love also had blossomed against all odds.

"Do you think we'll ever meet Ohtani and his wife?" Maya asked, a mischievous twinkle in her eye to his gossip columnist spouse. "They seem like the perfect couple, hidden away from the prying eyes of the world."

Alexander chuckled, his gaze lingering on Maya's face. "Perhaps if you bake one of your famous moon rabbit cakes, they'll come looking for us."

Not far away, amidst the frenzy of the press box, Shinichi and Hana sought refuge in a quiet corner. Hana, having just translated Fujinami's words for the media, wore the weight of his confession like a cloak.

"Fujinami is still fixated on Ohtani's troubles off the field," Shinichi observed, his brow furrowed in contemplation. "But perhaps there is more to it than meets the eye."

Hana met his gaze, her eyes reflecting the complexities of their situation. "The rivalry runs deep between these folks like Autobots and Decepticons," she mused, "but beneath it all, perhaps it is a quest for invalidation for each ballteams."

A moment of silence passed between them, punctuated only by the distant crack of bats and the roar of the crowd. The warmup continued unabated, but the question lingered, a silent melody woven into the fabric of the night.

As the scene unfolded, the tension in the air dissipated, replaced by an unexpected absurdity worthy of a Monty Python comedy skit. Turns out it's Fluffy, the comedian, singing the national anthem of Mexico.

Kazuya and Chizuru, still standing by the concession stand, found themselves in the midst of a surreal encounter. A troupe of Spanish-speaking fans approached them, each clad in outrageous costumes resembling their favorite baseball players.

"Senor and Senorita!" one of them exclaimed, brandishing a foam finger in the air. "We are here to cheer for the Buffaloes! Vamos!"

Kazuya blinked in disbelief, unsure of how to respond to the bizarre spectacle unfolding before him. Chizuru, on the other hand, couldn't contain her laughter, the absurdity of the situation proving too much to bear.

"Buffaloes? Y'all mean Yamazaki? " Kazuya mumbled.

Meanwhile, across the field, Alex and Maya watched in amusement as a group of mariachi musicians serenaded the players with a lively rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."

"Isn't this supposed to be a baseball game between Eastern Asians?" Maya quipped, her eyes dancing with mirth.

Alex chuckled, his gaze lingering on Maya's face. "Seems more like a circus, if you ask me."

Their laughter echoed across the stadium, mingling with the sounds of the crowd and the crack of bats in the distance. Amidst the chaos and hilarity of the moment, a new chapter began, filled with unexpected twists and turns, ready to unfold with each passing inning.

The three couples' joy were a stark contrast to the game itself. While Diamante was unplanned due to a trouble with the UN Security Council meeting in the previous host city, bad blood is always bad blood. The Clásico Mundial game between the maritime neighbors shall living up to its hype, filled with multiple bench clearing brawls.

As the first light of dawn filtered through the trees, the figure stirred, a spark of curiosity igniting in their eyes. With trembling hands, they turned the pages of the ancient book, their heart pounding with anticipation. For within its weathered pages lay the key to a long-forgotten secret, a tale of magic and destiny that had been lost to the sands of time.

Within a sense of purpose burning in their soul, the figure set out on a journey that would change their life forever...
