"DAD CALLED ME," RICO said as soon as daniela walked into the house. she dropped her bags in shock, them clattering to the floor as she let out a quiet gasp. "said he's coming round tonight to see us."
"and i'm just hearing about this now?" dani asked, her voice slightly raised as he flinched at her harsh tone. she then frowned as she noticed his neck was red, almost as if someone had attempted to choke him. "he's been already, hasn't he?"
"no," he shook his head and subconsciously raised his hand to cover redness around his neck, though rico didn't realise that doing this would reveal his blooded knuckles.
"what the fuck?!" daniela exclaimed loudly, taking his hand in hers and observing his scars. she then looked up and gasped once she saw a black bruise forming around his eye. "i swear to fuck if you're lying to me rico, you're fucking dead."
"dad hasn't come yet!" rico screamed back, before letting his voice drop into a whisper. "he didn't do this."
"then who did?"
"doesn't matter."
"well yes it does-" daniela was cut off by someone knocking on their door. the siblings stilled before running over to look through the peephole. their breaths ran short once they saw who it was. "he brought mum as well? fuck."
"don't answer," rico begged, only to flinch as they knocked on the door again - only this time it was harsher, and more forceful; it had daniela flinch away from resting on the door. "just call trent or something. don't answer. i- i can't."
daniela would call trent, if he knew about what her father did to her of course. he knew little parts and he knew that the siblings didn't keep in touch with their parents anymore, but he didn't know specific details.
she didn't want to tell trent, too afraid of what his reaction could be. then again, daniela didn't know anything about his past either — only the basics he caught her up with. it was like a mutual agreement between the couple that their pasts would never be brought up, swallowed down by their fake smiles while they tried to carry on and grow together as normal.
how foolish.
"he's gonna break the door down if i don't answer!" dani seethed at her younger brother, and without realising it her hand had slipped and accidentally opened the lock. the only source keeping him and their mother inside being her own body.
"i've already been through enough abuse today! i don't need this as well!" rico snapped loudly.
daniela frowned and opened her mouth to ask him what the fuck he meant but she was stopped by the front door flying open, knocking them both to the ground.
"took your fucking time," their father, john, seethed as he walked into the house with his wife, and their mother, karen, following his every move.
daniela picked herself up off the floor and held her hand out to help rico. he slowly stood up, flinching as he realised john was stood right in front of him. john grabbed ahold of his sons face, he noticed the black eye, the bruising around his neck, the cheeks dried up from fallen tears, and the nose that had definitely been bleeding.
"fuck happened to you?" he asked, harshly letting rico go and pushing his face away. he took a long drag of his cigarette and raised his brows, waiting impatiently for an answer.
rico avoided eye contact. "nothing."
"doesn't look like nothing."
"why do you care?"
"i don't," john laughed, throwing his cigarette onto the kitchen floor and standing on it as dani bit her lip. "just pissed someone's fucked you up before i could. tell me, who was it?"
daniela knew that rico would never dare lie to their dad, no matter how long they were apart for. it was an unspoken rule during their childhood that lying would get them the biggest beating of their life - so even she listened in as rico finally mustered up the courage to answer.
"my girlfriend," he whispered, keeping his eyes on the floor.
dani gasped quietly as her face hardened. next time she got her hands on hanna without a fucking h, the girl was finished. she obviously had her suspicions, but them being proven to be true was like a kick in the face.
why did she always have to be right?
karen, their mother, laughed and spoke up for the first time being there. she had previously been too busy walking around their ground floor, looking at the progress made from the last time her and john had turned up and destroyed everything. "you tell your little girlfriend we said thanks for continuing our job when we're not around."
daniela instantly pulled rico behind her, glaring up at the people she once used to refer to as her family. even the thought of it made her feel sick now. "get the fuck out my house."
rico clung onto the back of his older sisters shirt, a habit he has done since they were children. she was always the one to protect him and look out for him, and in times like this he often believed that it was impossible to ever return the favour.
"but why? we were just getting along!" john stated mockingly as he threw his arms out to emphasis he wasn't leaving, yet daniela and rico thought that it meant something else and subconsciously flinched back.
daniela sighed as rico grabbed ahold of her hand, knowing she would have to put up another brave facade for him to follow.
"why are you here, john?" daniela questioned, spitting his name out like it was venom.
"we came to see our children," karen answered for him, frowning. "can we not do that anymore?"
"you lost the title of our parents years ago when we ran away," daniela argued back, throwing her arms around rico and bringing him close to her chest as she hugged him. "now isn't any different."
"we just wanted to check up on you," john smirked, an idea running through his head - something that he knew would gain a response out of them.
dani noticed this straight away. "whatever your plotting, save it. just fuck off."
"we'd rather stay," karen argued, sitting down on a chair and sharing a nod with her husband who was quick to turn back to his son.
"rico," john called out, staring at the boy huddled in his sisters embrace. "how's chloe?"
rico tensed in daniela's arms.
"pretty girl," john nodded, almost in approval. dani scrunched her face up at him in disgust, not seeing the glare that had cast across rico's face as he lifted his head from her chest to look at john. "she the one who did this to you? need me to do the same to her back?" he offered as karen giggled loudly.
"touch her and your fucking dead," rico threatened in a sharp tone, causing dani to raise her brows at him in slight shock.
karen laughed. "touched a nerve?"
"don't worry, i won't cause any harm to her pretty little face," john raised his hands in surrender, and dani felt rico tense just by him calling chloe pretty again. "though, her brothers a different story."
now it was daniela's turn to tense. "what?"
"you know, trent?" john pretended to act clueless before a wicked grin broke across his face. "your boyfriend?"
"stay the fuck away from him," dani shook her head, looking between her parents. "stay away from them both. don't drag them into... into this!"
"or what?" karen smiled.
"he's turned you soft, hasn't he?" john asked with a smirk as he leaned against the kitchen counter as if he was interrogating her. "he's making you weak."
"shut up," daniela whispered.
"oh look, she can't even defend her-fucking-self. no wonder! look at who your dating!" john screamed, receiving a loud laugh from karen at his obvious attack towards trent's defending skills.
"get out!" rico screamed at them, gaining his voice and pointing towards the front door.
"cmon karen," john laughed, grabbing ahold of her hand as the siblings watched on — dumbfounded. "don't be shocked when your boyfriend shows up fucked. gotta show him who he's fucking with."
"you don't even know where he lives," dani scoffed, more to reassure herself than anyone else.
"oh really?" karen asked, holding up her phone to show them trent's house on google maps. a laugh escaped her lips at their dropped expressions. "we saw chloe walking around town the other day, and john decided to be smart and put a tracker on her bag; that's how we found out where they live."
daniela could feel her heart drop as well as hearing rico curse loudly behind her - the thought of what else john, or karen, could have done to chloe when he wasn't there running through his mind.
daniela was more worried about the safety of her boyfriend, because he didn't even know what her parents looked like. he could easily open his door and think it was just some couple, only to then be greeted by a knife to the throat.
"you can't protect him," john said. "you're both too traumatised to be doing any shit like that — you're only hurting each other," he shrugged as she went silent, taking in his words.
karen spoke next. "how would you feel if you knew that it was you who really hurt him? that you were the reason he's out of football for months? daniela, my girl, you're hurting each other. we know of his past, trent can't give you what you want when he doesn't even know what he wants himself."
"but you're no better," john added in. "you're only together to try and find happiness, but you're just breaking each other more. trent doesn't love you, daniela. he just loves the idea of being happy."
and with those final, manipulative words, john and karen walked out of the house exactly like how they had walked out of their hearts all those years ago.
rico cursed loudly and started pacing up and down the kitchen, muttering incoherent things under his breath as he repeated the name chloe whenever he could. daniela forgot about what hanna had done to him, too focussed on replaying her parents words in her head.
she had always been a victim of manipulation, her father had been using it against her ever since she was younger to persuade her to let him in her bed every night. and here she was, feeling quite like a little girl again as a tear slowly dropped from her eye.
he wasn't right, was he?
