although amara could only remember a bit of the night before she still remember what ruby had said to her. it had resonated with her, whether she liked it or not. amara had tried to stop herself from believing ruby's words, however she was starting to think there must have been some truth to her claims. she wanted to understand how she was always second to ruby.
when they were in high school ruby had often dated some of amara's past crushes and even exes. sometimes the guys that were with her, had liked ruby first but they couldn't date her so they dated amara as some sort of consolation prize. in the end amara would break up with them as she realised they had settled for her. and when she did so, ruby would waste no time in dating them and then discarding of them once they were of no use to her.
now you may be wondering, why did amara stay friends with her? why didn't she raise an argument after ruby keeps breaking girl code? the thing is: she did. multiple times. but ruby would always gaslight and manipulate amara and some how make her self the victim, so amara can pity her.
( i just thought of bassem yusef arguing with piers morgan. he really did do amazing and our everything into perspective. so quick pause to say FREE PALESTINE 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸 ).
this isn't to say people didn't warn amara of ruby. fatima had done so multiple times, which led to many arguments between the two of them. ( also her mum warned her. like that's literally the most important sign. if your mum doesn't like your friend bin them ). it wasn't that amara didn't see what was happening. it was just that she was a very insecure girl and being around ruby felt comforting, at the start of their friendship. amara couldn't let go of their friendship as she just couldn't let go of the good memories between them, even though ruby's actions fed amara's insecurities.
but by the time she had started dating james, she had long been estranged from ruby. she realised what people were telling her and noticed how even without the topic of boys, ruby was an incredibly terrible friend: she had huge double standards and was completely controlling. so when ruby betrayed amara, it wasn't that she was surprised but that she was hurt.
that was when she had learnt the valuable lesson, that when someone shows you who they are, believe them. she wanted nothing more to rid herself of the whole situation. but that would be ignoring her feelings and so she grieved the loss of both relationships. yet she still had some sort of sympathy for ruby: the girl's father was in and out of her life since she was a toddler, and her mother was a struggling working class woman. it meant essentially she had to raise herself and had no one to guide her. it also meant she craved male validation more than anyone, as she hadn't gotten it from her father.
unfortunately, this resulted in her often 'home wrecking' a relationship. to her, the feeling of being better than someone else, in a man's eyes would give her all the comfort she wanted. it didn't. however, amara had stopped allowing ruby's unfortunate home life be an excuse to her unkind actions. she was done feeding into ruby's ridiculous, manipulative narratives. so the night before, when she argued with dave, she had realised he had already fed into some of her, as she called it, 'bullshit'.
to some aspect, amara pitied david. she couldn't believe ruby managed to manipulate him and turn him against her. however, she also couldn't fathom the fact that he believed it. in the short time after going to the bar together the first time, amara and david had been contacting each other almost everyday, and had soon become quite close friends. she had assumed he was loyal and wouldn't believe the lies of someone who he'd just met, nevertheless a woman who had basically made amara's teen years a living hell.
to amara, the worst part was that he knew of ruby, he knew what she did to amara. of course, there was no way of him knowing who exactly ruby was, as he'd never met her. but amara had assumed that after knowing it was the same ruby, that he would forget about continuing to date her. call it self-centred but amara thought since they were friends, it would make no sense for dave to date ruby after knowing what she'd done to her. of course she was very wrong and tried to warn dave that ruby was the type to cheat and betray as it's part of her character. but there was nothing she could do but hope that he came to his senses.
