Smile at Everyone

"If someone smiles at me, I won't jump"

That's what she told herself

As she walked solemnly to the cliffs

The sun shining down upon her

Her hair a raggedy mess

She had never felt so hopeless in her life

It seemed everything she tried wouldn't work

Attempting to gain back a sense of happiness

That felt long and washed away

As she walked through the town

Holding her head low

She waited...

And waited...

For just that one special person to smile at her

And turn her away from such an irrational decision

But no one seemed to notice the sadness in her eyes

So she kept walking...

Making it past the docks at sea

The cliffs guarding the mountain she would soon climb

She looked over at the fisherman laughing

Casting their lines into the water

Joking and having a great time

Again, she waited...

But they failed to notice her

Their smiles only directing at one another

Not her

And so she started climbing the rocks up to the cliff

A tear now starting to roll down her eyes

The hopelessness and despair only growing

Once she arrived at the top

Their was a group of young adults

Eating food and throwing around a football

She sat on a rock

Watching them for what must've been an hour

Praying as she looked out to the horizon

The calming waves crashing down into the ocean waters below

Slamming up again the rocks

Desperately wishing that just one of them would smile at her

But nobody did...

And they started to pack up their belongings

Eventually leaving her all alone

To where she felt there was no option left

Another tear trickled down her eye

As she started walking to the edge of the cliff

Her whole life coming down to this single moment

She gazed down to the waters

Her heart sinking in despair

It was finally over...

But just then

The sound of a loud bark turned her away

She looked back to see a little dachshund dog running towards her

"Don't worry! He's friendly."

She gazed over to the voice

Seeing an elderly woman looking at her

Her lips curling upward

Her white teeth flashing brightly

The joy in her face happy as ever

I now make a point to smile at everyone
