"Maryam, have a sit" her father said as she did as she was told while Rukkaya sat besides her giving her a reassuring look.
"We just came back from the hospital and your husband is currently under life support, apparently he was overdosing and abusing his pills which affected his heart and now his in a critical condition" her father said as she remained silent
"His in need of a heart transplant otherwise his going to loose his life" he said again as she looked at him in disbelief,
"Inna illahi was inna illahi raji'un" Maryam and Rukkaya let out as she looked at Aliyu's mother face to see the woman glaring angrily at her
"I'm not here to shout at you or scold you, I just called you down here cause your in-laws have something to tell you but before that I have something to say" her father said as she just stared at him trying her best not to cry
"I'm not blaming you for anything but I want you to tell me how on earth was your husband abusing his drugs and you didn't mention anything to us or try to stop him" her father said as she shook her head letting the tears she've been holding back fall out
"Did you know he was overdosing, yes or no?" he asked as she stayed silent before nodding
"Inna illahi was inna illahi raji'un" the whole family exclaimed disappointedly
"Why didn't you tell us about it or try to stop him?" Her father asked angry
"I spoke to him about it and asked him about it but he never gave me any response and when he did which was today he said it calms him" she responded crying
"How long have you known about his overdosing?" Her father asked
"He did it once we newly got married but back then he said that's the right amount for him so I thought it was the same this time around" she said again
"Maryam, are you hearing yourself, so when you saw him doing that why didn't you tell us, why didn't you tell anyone?" He asked her upset
"I didn't know it'll get to this" she said almost silently
"And so you remained silent, you watched your husband abuse his drugs and didn't say anything to anyone" her father said disappointed
"I'm sorry" she said as she cried while Rukkaya calmed her
"Sorry for what?" Hajiya Nafisa spoke up
"My son is fighting for his life and your telling us your sorry, will your sorry save him or make him better, will your sorry replace his heart or will your sorry magically make everything alright again" she said again angrily at Maryam
"Calm down, don't shout at her you can see she regrets it" her husband said as she glared at him
"Isn't that what she deserves, she's responsible for his condition and nothing you or anyone will say will make me think otherwise, this girl doesn't respect or care about her husband that's why his in the condition he is today, assuming she showed even a bit of care at least we would have stopped him a long time" Hajiya Nafisa said
"Forget stopping him, I'm sure the way she treated him was the reason he started overdosing in the first place, how could you have gotten your son married to such an arrogant woman" hajiya Nafisa said again
"That's enough, keep quiet, this is not the time to blame anyone for anything, we have to think of a way to save Aliyu if not his going to die and that can't happen so stop blaming her I'm sure she's also hurt" her husband said as she eyed him
"I don't need all this lectures of yours just tell her what we've decided regarding Aliyu or I'll tell her myself and I'm sure you don't want that" Hajiya Nafisa said as her husband sighed shaking his head
"Maryam" the elderly man called
"Na'am" she said as she tried to stop crying
"We've decided that we'll try our very best to find a donor for Aliyu and if we're not able to and Allah take his life then so be it" he said as everyone exclaimed "Inna illahi wa inna illahi raji'un"
"And if Alhamdullilah, we're able to find a donor and the transplant goes successful and he recovers and is healthy again then we're going to make sure Aliyu gets a second wife" he said as she looked at him for a moment before looking away from him
"We knows Aliyu loves you a lot and he cares about you but we're not sure of you, we're not sure of how you see Aliyu or if you feel the same way he feels for you and I won't blame you for that cause you both didn't get to know each other before your marriage"
"But at the same time, if Aliyu loves then he loves wholeheartedly and genuinely, Aliyu loved you despite everything, the sudden marriage, sudden situation and never once has he ever complained of you, he supports and stand by you I'm sure you're aware of that and I'm sure you also know in return of all this Aliyu deserves to also be loved"
"You both have been together for a year now and I've never seen as much affection from you to Aliyu then I have seen from Aliyu and you're well aware his a heart patient and now as Allah destined we are in this unfortunate situation where there's no longer guarantee on the life of our son, Allah May decide to give him another chance or take him to rest, if that happens you become a widow, your kids becomes fatherless and we'll loose a son and In Sha Allah that won't happen"
"If In Sha Allah we're able to find a donor and Aliyu gets himself back and is healthy again then we'll get him a second wife, he needs to be loved and I'll find a suitable woman who's capable of loving and caring for our son even with his flaws, I know Aliyu is stubborn and will refuse another wife but I'm sure you also know all feelings and emotions lies in the heart, the heart that Aliyu uses to love and care for you is about to die and if it's replaced things won't be the same"
"The heart he would have won't recognize or love you, with time it might start to love you but it'll never love you as much as Aliyu's heart does, his memory would work the same and remember you as his wife and your memories together but the heart won't love you as much as Aliyu's current heart does, it'll learn to love you with the more time you spend together and you need to know something as well, that heart would be capable of loving someone else, and if Aliyu gets remarried to a woman we either choose or a woman he chooses, he'll eventually learn to love her and you'll learn to share your husband"
"Please pray for him and his good health and pray Allah helps him and know that you'll always have a place in Aliyu's life and I hope you do in his heart as well but we're certainly getting him married to someone who would love him and I hope you get to accept it with time, I'm telling you earlier on so you won't try to oppose when the time comes and if you have anything to say, you should say it now, tell us if you're against it" he said as he looked at Maryam who's still trying to process all she was told.
She can't blame the parents, they had every rights to do what they're doing, she had more than a year but she messed up, but will Aliyu ever be able to love her the same if he gets a heart transplant.
She's definitely not a woman that embrace polygamy or polygamous men, she couldn't forgive Aliyu when he kissed Alayna and now his going to get married to another woman and will probably do more than kissing, can she handle that.
Does she have any right to oppose it, even if she opposed will they listen to her, if not for her sake then for the sake of their children, plus it's very wrong for him to have a second wife and they've not spent up to 5 years together. She can oppose and she will.
"I can't share my husband with another woman" Maryam said as they all looked at her, not surprised by her statement but definitely upset with it especially Aliyu's mum who looked like she wanted to kill Maryam with her eyes, of course the second wife suggestion was her idea and now that Aliyu was getting a transplant it's definitely going to work out well for her.
"What do you mean by that?, You had him all to yourself and what did he get in return, a situation of life and death and you have the audacity to say you can't share him, you don't deserve to have him either" hajiya Nafisa blurted out as each of her statement hit Maryam like a burning arrow
"And why are you even letting her have a say in it, our son can't keep suffering in a marriage where he isn't loved whether she likes it or not Aliyu must remarry" Hajiya Nafisa said again to her husband who's now feeling embarrassed of her behavior
"You self calm down, you know very well not all women are polygamous, let's listen to her first before coming to a conclusion" her husband responded to her as she rolled her eyes at him
"Maryam what do you mean you can't share your Husband?" Her father asked her
"Abba, I can't share my husband with another woman and it's not been 5 years since we got married he has no rights to take a second wife" she said as she felt completely sober making the family look between themselves
"What are you saying?" Her father said again
"I'm well aware everyone thinks Aliyu is in the situation he is because of me but I assure you all that I'm not, the only reason why I wasn't able to care much about Aliyu or love him as much as I once did was because he cheated on me" she said
"Cheated on you?" Her father asked
"Yes, when his up and alive, like baba here said his memory would work just fine, you all can ask him about that and I'm sure he'll remember" she said as she looked at hajiya Nafisa who was glaring at her
"And also if he recovers In Sha Allah and accepts the proposal of a second wife then I as well will seek divorce from him..." She said but couldn't finish her statement as the family exclaimed" la ilaha illah lah" making her take a gulp before continuing her sentence
"I will seek a divorce and get custody of my children and Aliyu will loose all rights to them and I'll also remove your family name from my kids and replace them with my last name so along with loosing the kids your family also looses their grandchildren and I'll deprive you all of any rights to come in contact with them"
"I'm sure you all must think I'm rude but I'm only being protective of my children and if Aliyu refuses the divorce I won't think twice before taking it to court so before it gets to that I want you all to remove any idea of a second wife in our marriage, no one has the right to make any decisions for us, I and Aliyu would be the one to decide if a new woman comes in or not and if he wants a new woman then he looses me and my kids period" she said in a calm tone trying to be a nice as possible
"Shey you can hear her, she even has the audacity to make threats" hajiya Nafisa said
"I'm not making threats ummah I'm just giving my honest opinion, I'm not a polygamous woman and I won't settle for a polygamous man either, besides you said Aliyu's heart is the one that loves us and his new heart will learn to love us so if his given a transplant he won't love the children as his children, he'll love them as children and with time he might learn to love them as his own which means I have more than enough time to stop that from happening if he accepts your offer"
"I'm not being selfish for myself, I'm only protecting myself and my kids" she said again
"And your husband, do you even care about him?" Her father said in anger
"You're talking about getting a divorce if he accepts a second wife, are you even thinking about your kids, don't you know they'll loose their fathers name and what will you say to them when they're grown" her father said again
"Abba..." She was about to say as Aliyu's father cuts her off
"Assuming you cared about your husband as much as you cared about yourself then he wouldn't have been in the situation he is today and we won't have come to this decision but you acted how you wanted and all this is as a result to your mess" he said a bit upset
"I'm not going to blame you cause you said he cheated and I'm sure you must have felt hurt by that, but his human and his your husband, couldn't you have forgiven him, you had up to 10 months but was still unable to forgive him for a mistake, and now you want to divorce him if he wants to get a second wife" he said again
"Maryam will you be able to forgive yourself if Aliyu dies?" He asked her as the tears she's been holding back found its way out again
"Please give her more time to think about it, she's not in the right state of mind, we're sorry about her behavior but I also feel we also don't have any rights to make a decision in her marriage with Aliyu, let Aliyu recover first and we can have this conversation again" Rukkaya said patting Maryam
"It's okay, we've heard, take her inside we'll talk about this another time" her father in-law responded as Rukkaya nodded taking Maryam upstairs while the family watched them leave.
No one is more angry and pained like Hajiya Nafisa right now, no matter what Maryam says or does Aliyu must get a second wife and no one is stopping it.
Maryam climbed the stairs with a heartbroken self, they were all right if she had forgiven Aliyu none of this would have happened.
She keeps blaming herself for all that has happened but what was important right now was to make sure Aliyu never gets a second wife.
She's not going to let that happen, she's not ready to be divorced as well so she's going to have to make Aliyu fall in love with her all over again so he'll listen to her and not get a second.
Now the battle is between Maryam and her mother in-law, how will this end.
