"Maryam what's up with you" Rukkaya said calling the woman out of her daydream
"Urm..." Maryam said but couldn't finish her words when Rukkaya cuts her off
"Umeeta has been crying and you're not paying any attention" She said again swaying the baby in her arms when Maryam attempted to collect the baby from her
"I think she's hungry" Maryam said as Rukkaya nodded
"I'll feed her, please look after Omar and Umar for me, I noticed they both have hight temperature" she said again
"Yeah, I spoke to Aunty Ilham about it, she said she'll be here with the doctor, it might be a cold" Rukkaya said as Maryam released a sigh.
"I don't want anything to happen to my children fah, I'm worried" Maryam said with a sad expression
"In Sha Allah they'll be fine, the doctor will come if there's an issue we'll fix it calm down" Rukkaya said as Maryam nodded
"In Sha Allah" Maryam said, few minutes later she was done feeding Ummeta and kept her back in the crib when Aunty Ilham and the doctor arrived.
After examining the babies for few minutes it was confirmed they both had a fever and was given medications after that the doctor left.
Maryam felt a bit relieved but was still worried cause her babies were less than two weeks old.
"Are they sleeping yet?" Maryam asked her aunt for the 7th time now
"Yes they are, calm down don't be worried" her aunt responded as Rukkaya left the room.
It was time for lunch and this time Maryam didn't go down to eat, she stayed with her sleeping babies and her food was brought to her.
Unable to eat she just kept it aside worried about the health of her kids and Aliyu's behavior.
Time passed Rukkaya came back into the room with Salim,
"Mummy" Salim called Maryam teasingly as she smiled at him
"How are you?" she asked
"I'm fine, just coming back from the gym" he said as she scanned him for a bit, he still had sweat on him and it was very visible
"Didn't I ask you to have your bath before coming here" Rukkaya said more like a scold
"I just wanted to say hi first, I'm going to my friend house after I have my bath so I won't have time to come here" he said smiling sheepishly at his elder sister while she glared at him
"Ka yi ka bar mana gida (do and leave our house)" she said again making him burst out laughing while Maryam laughed along with him.
"I heard our boys aren't feeling well how's their health now?" He said going over to the crib about to lift one up
"Don't you dare carry any of those babies with your sweaty self" Rukkaya said more like a scold as he giggled scratching the back of his head
"Oops, my bad" he said giggling again
"How's their health?" He said again
"They have fever" Maryam said as she sighed
"Ya Allah, May Allah grant them quick recovery" he said
"Ameen" they all muttered when there was a knock on the door getting their attention
"Salim check who it is" Rukkaya said as he nodded before going over to the door.
"It's Ya Aliyu" he said after opening the door grabbing Maryam's attention even more
"Can I come in?" Aliyu asked as Salim stepped aside for him
"Yes of course" Rukkaya said as Aliyu stepped inside exchanging greetings with everyone except Maryam
"I heard my sons are ill, what happened to them?" He asked going over to the crib as he picked up Omar and Umar, yes Aliyu is the only one in the house allowed to carry two kids at a time.
"We called the doctor over and he said they had fever but had given us medication for it" Rukkaya responded as he sat on the couch staring at the face of the sleeping babies making him smile
"Aliyu are you okay?" Rukkaya asked as the man looked at her
"What?" He said
"You look sick, is everything okay with you?" She said again as he forced a smile on his face
"Tell me about it, he passed out twice at the gym this week" Salim said as Aliyu looked at him
"Subhanallah" Rukkaya exclaimed
"Aliyu?, are you good?" She said again as he looked at Maryam who was staring at him waiting for an explanation making him shake his head before forcing a smile
"I'm good, I just over worked myself, that's all" he said as he looked back at Rukkaya
"If there's anything wrong please tell us" she said as he smiled at her again
"Everything's good if there's anything wrong I'll meet my doctor" he said as she nodded
"May Allah heal you from all your burden" She said
"Ameen" everyone exclaimed including Maryam
"How long have they been asleep?" Aliyu said changing the topic
"Not long ago" Rukkaya responded
"When do you think they'll wake up?" He asked again
"It's 2pm now, latest by 4:30 they should be awake" Rukkaya said as he nodded
"I'll come back by then" he said as he got up to keep the babies back in the crib
"You're leaving so soon" Salim said as he looked at Salim before shaking his head
"How many times do I have to tell you the first you do after coming back from the gym is washing up, how could you even come into the women's room looking like that" Aliyu said in a calm voice as Salim giggled in embarrassment
"I wanted to talk to them first cause I won't be back if I go have my bath" he responded as Aliyu shook his head
"Have your bath once you're done here, and don't forget to take your supplements" he said
"I will boss" he said chuckling at the end of it making Aliyu smile
"I'll leave you all now" Aliyu said before leaving the room as they bid him goodbye while Maryam contemplated whether to go after him or not.
At the end she decided to stay back.
Time passed, 4:30 arrived and as said Aliyu came back to see his babies. This time they were all awake and thankfully not crying.
Maryam fed them earlier so they didn't seem hungry or cry of hunger as well.
Aliyu was playing with Omar and Umar while Rukkaya and thier aunt's kept awwning at the sight while Maryam just sat beside one of the cribs studying Aliyu and the children.
They seems to get along with him and laugh more around him than when it was just her.
No doubts this children are going to grow up loving their dad more than her but that's not what bothered her
Above all she was worried about Aliyu's behavior and distance, he looked normal and happy around the kids but once his out of this room his all victim again.
Isolating himself and being silent confusing her and messing up her brain.
Evening came as most of the women in the room went down to the kitchen to start the preparation for dinner leaving just Maryam, Aliyu and their kids.
Occasionally sparing glances at his wife Aliyu decides to leave the room cause he thought she felt uncomfortable by his presence meanwhile she was just anticipating for him to speak to her
Keeping the baby who was still awake in the crib Aliyu was about to leave when Maryam held his hand
She tired of all this, if he isn't going to speak to her then she's going to make the first move and speak to him instead.
"Aliyu" she called as he turned to face her
Both their expression was unreadable and uneasy to tell what's going on with them
"Yes" he responded
"Why's your temperature high" she asked as she could feel his body warmth from the touch and no doubts he has a high temperature
"What?" He said as he quickly pulled his hand away from her adjusting his shirt
"What is wrong with you, it's clear you're sick why are you being quiet about it" she said trying not to sound like she's scolding him
"I'm fine, like I said earlier if something's wrong with me I'll go to my doctor" he said looking away from her, maintaining eye contact with her at this point is really difficult and he can't do that especially now that he isn't being honest.
"Fine then, but if anything happens to you you're on your own and I'm not responsible" she said as he gave her a look of disbelief before smiling afterwards shaking his head
"Of course you're not" he said before leaving the room and this time once again she didn't try to stop him
Sighing Maryam sits back on the bed trying her best not to worry but failed, for some reason she still felt uneasy about Aliyu
'Should she go after him or just let him be', the thoughts that kept clouding her as she came to the conclusion of letting him be since his not ready to speak up.
Time passed with Maryam just on the bed confused of Aliyu's behavior and finally came to the conclusion of confronting him.
Something's up, she needs to know about it, yes she dislike him and still don't accept him as the father of her babies but at the same time she can't let them be fatherless and she's not ready to be a widow
And besides from the way Aliyu's mother behaved with her few days earlier if anything happens to him even if she was proved innocent the blame will still fall onto her.
She got up adjusting herself in her veil as she checks on her babies one last time before leaving the room.
Heading straight to her room Maryam arrives and open the door, this time without Salams and not surprised to see Aliyu in the same condition she once last met him in this room.
On the bed sitting weakly with used pills and injections scattered around on the bed.
