Season 2, episode 25

✦✧✦✧

"One week after his arrest, Reynolds pled not guilty to the charge of Alison Dilaurentis' murder. However, prosecutors remain confident with their case. Rosewood PD's working theory is that Reynolds became a police officer to destroy evidence that linked him to the murder scene. Investigators received a break in the case when that document was recovered"

The five girls were seated once again in the Hastings kitchen, T.V on full volume as they listened to the latest update in Alison's murder case.

Garrett's arrest had surprised the girls to say the least, they were ready to head straight to the police station to turn in all evidence of A when the man was arrested only a few feet away from where the girls were sitting now.

"That must be page 5 of Ali's autopsy report" Hanna stated as they listened to the news reporter confirm the destroyed evidence.

"Garrett took it but somebody gave it back" Emily muttered.

"My mom is friends with the prosecutor" Spencer told them, "that somebody was Jenna"

"Can we finally put Ali to rest now?" Aria asked, speaking the question the girls were all silently asking.

"Or is it two down and two to go?" Hanna responded, "Ian's dead, Garrett's in jail, Melissa and Jenna were in Ali's room that night too"

"Han's right" Sophie muttered, "they may not have killed Ali, but they're definitely guilty of something"

"Love gone wrong" Melissa said, walking into the kitchen surpirsing the girls.

"What are you talking about?" Spencer asked, turning the T.V off as she spoke.

"I knew Ian didn't kill Alison" Melissa admitted, "and you four can keep a secret, but you don't have the constitution for murder"

Sophie frowned as she listened to Melissa speak and the blonde couldn't help but think there was another meaning to her words. It was like she was telling the girls that they were naive, as if she knew about the game they were playing.

The blonde was always slightly hesitant when it came to accusing Melissa of being A, she didn't think she was capable of doing it. But in that moment, even Sophie was beginning to doubt her previous opinions.

"I know how Jenna Marshall went blind" Melissa told them, "So did Garrett and if he killed Alison, it's because he thought she deserved it"

A chill ran down Sophie's spine and she had to bite her lip to stop herself from saying something she might regret. No matter how angry the blonde had once gotten with her best friend, and despite how horribly Alison treated people, Sophie never once wished death upon her.

Melissa didnt say another word to the girl, she simply smiled as if their previous conversation never happened. With a hand gently caressing the bump on her stomach, Melissa left the kitchen and walked away from the girls.

"She definitely know about the Jenna thing" Hanna muttered once she was sure Melissa was gone.

The minute the words left Hanna's mouth, the girls' phones all chimed, signalling a new text.

UNKNOWN ID

'You still have something that belongs to me. Bring it or one of you leaves in a body bag – A'

Emily read the text aloud as Sophie stared down at her own phone with wide eyes. The blonde felt sick as goosebumps rose on her skin.

A was becoming much more desperate, and Sophie knew better than to dismiss A's text as an empty threat.

And as if the text wasn't enough, Spencer's doorbell went off and the brunette excused herself to go and see who – or what – was at the door.

"A has to be talking about her phone" Hanna stated. '

"You still have it in your closet right?" Emily asked the blonde.

"Yes" Hanna muttered.

"Is it just me or does A talking about body bags make you nervous?" Sophie asked, placing her phone back into her pocket.

"Guys it was a messenger" Spencer said, re-entering the kitchen with a large, yellow envelope in her hands, "something for each of us"

Spencer pulled five smaller black envelopes out of the larger ones, each one had the girls' names written in cursive, gold ink. The brunette handed each girl their own envelope and Sophie took hers with shaking hands.

Inside, was a sleek piece of card, this time the writing was in black ink. Sophie pulled out the card, eyes scanning over it as her hands slightly trembled, and her mouth went awfully dry.

The blonde's heart rate sped up considerably, written on the card was an invitation to the Masquerade Ball that was happening at school to celebrate the end of the school year.

Sophie had no intention of going to the dance considering everything that was going on in her life right now. There was once a time where Sophie would get so excited for the dances at school, her and Alison would spent the weeks leading up to the event making plans and talking about nothing but the dance.

But things had changed.

"A wants to play hide and seek" Emily muttered bitterly.

However, the invitation wasn't the only thin g inside the envelope. Sophie pulled out a small piece of white card, a message specifically for the girls was written in bright, red ink.

"Be there when the clock strikes midnight" Sophie read aloud.

She was now certain that her breakfast was going to reappear.

"Spence?" Aria called out.

"Hide and seek was my favorite game with Melissa, you wanna know why?" Spencer stated, "I always won"

✦✧✦✧

"She was just standing in that kitchen, basically admitting to us that she is A" Hanna proclaimed as the girls, minus Spencer, walked to school talking about what in the hell had just happened.

"And now she wants to kill us" Aria muttered, "parties and body bags go together like drinking and driving"

"Guys, I don't trust Melissa as far as I can throw her and Ian's fetus" Sophie started, missing the weird look that Emily gave her for her choice of words, "but let's not forget that Jenna also knows about the Jenna Thing"

"Ian's fetus?" Emily scoffed, "seriously Soph that's disgusting"

"Look, A is all knowing right?" Hanna started, stopping the girls in their tracks, "it's like a genius on steroids, the only person I know that's smarter that Spencer is her sister"

"Um, I take offence" Spencer suddenly said, announcing herself with an offended look, "Melissa did score higher on the Wechsler Scale, but when you take into account my scores and the Flynn Effect, combined with real-life accomplishments, the gap in our IQ is virtually non-existent"

Sophie listened to Spencer rant about why and how Melissa was indeed not smarter than her, which in all honesty flew over Sophie's head. The blonde had no idea what half of the things Spencer was talking about were.

"What are you doing with Ali's bag?" Emily asked, quickly changing the topic.

"I'm giving A back her phone over my dead body" Spencer stated firmly, "which means that we have until midnight tomorrow to unmask this bitch once and for all, and this bag had brought us closer to the truth than we've ever gotten"

"You think there's something in there that we missed?" Sophie asked.

"We need to go through it again with a fresh pair of eyes" Spencer stated, "but with Melissa at home I..."

"No, forget my place" Hanna shook her head, "my mom is still hot on the A trail"

"Yeah, you can count my place out" Sophie sighed, "Jason is still staying with me, and I feel bad enough lying to him about this whole thing as it is"

"Let's just meet after school" Aria suggested, "I have an idea for a great costume"

Aria had been quick to change to topic of the conversation as she saw Mona approach the group.

"Oh, you're going to the masquerade mash! Me too" Mona exclaimed, "Can you believe blind Jenna's going? A week ago, that would have made me a no-show, but since she dumped Noel con man for seeing-eye Toby, sorry Spencer-"

Mona started speaking rapid French for a second and seeing as Sophie was not at all fluent in the language, she had no clue what the girl was saying.

"I love this vintage shop a few towns over" Mona said, speaking English once more, "we should all go after school and get out costumes together!"

Sophie shared a look with Spencer, not knowing exactly what she should say.

"I would love to but, um, I have to take my sister to an ultrasound" Spencer excused.

"My mom's coming back tomorrow, so I have some house stuff" Emily explained, brushing off Mona's invitation as she and Spencer walked off.

"I'm sorry Mona but I, um, have a date?" Sophie said, mentally kicking herself for how her excuse came out as more of a question rather than a statement. It wasn't a total lie, she was hanging out with Jason, however seeing as they were keeping their relationship private, she didn't know what else she could say.

"Yeah and vintage is my middle name but-"

Aria was cut off by the school bell ringing.

"I gotta get to class" Aria smiled, grabbing Sophie's arm and hurrying in the direction that Spencer and Emily had left in.

✦✧✦✧

"Tristan and Isolde?" Spencer said from her spot by Ezra's bookshelf, reading out what Sophie could only guess were authors, "Abelard and Elosie?"

The five girls were gathered in Ezra's apartment, a place where they were sure there would be no distractions and no prying eyes or ears.

Ezra's apartment was exactly like Sophie had imagined it to be to be honest, it was small, but not too small. The small studio was decorated in numerous different books and vintage posters, and the blonde swore it was impossible for someone to have read that many books.

"This it too cute" Emily smiled. The tanned girls was sitting by Ezra's desk, a photo album open on her lap.

"Fitz is a sucker for a tragic love story" Spencer commented as Aria made her way to the couch, a tray of mugs in her hands, "I so didnt mean that how it sounded"

"Have you heard from him?" Sophie asked from her spot on the couch.

"Yeah, he checks in" Aria nodded, "everything he thought he wanted, he's lost because of me. Guys, I-I think that it's really over this time"

Hanna's phone chiming on the bed caught the girls' attention, and that bubbling feeling of dread in Sophie stomach returned as the blonde girl picked up her phone.

"Great" Hanna sighed, "now Mona knows I lied about where I am. And Caleb is with so her he's gonna ask me why I ditched her"

Hanna declined the incoming call Sophie could only guess was from Caleb.

"You know, I am lying to everyone I care about" Hanna scoffed, "I don't even know why I started lying to begin with"

"You're lying because you don't want the people you care about to end up like Dr Sullivan" Spencer replied, "here one day and gone the next"

Sophie helped Spencer and Emily as they started to take everything out of the blue duffle bag they had been given from Jason. Sure, the bag was nothing but an abundance of clues about Alison, but Sophie honestly didn't know what else they were meant to be looking for, they had gone through everything in the bag multiple times. The newspapers had led the girls to that creepy doll hospital which they now knew that A was certainly a frequent customer at, but she didn't know what else they could've missed.

Hanna let out an annoyed huff as she flopped backwards onto the bed.

"Hanna, do you mind" Aria said, "it's kind of sacred ground"

"It is!"

Aria didnt reply to the girls, instead she raised an eyebrow and picked up the tray of freshly poured coffee, bringing it over to the girls on the couch.

"Man, you sure can keep a secret" Spencer teased, opening the pink Jewlery box and pulling out a couple of the necklaces.

"Hey, Em" Spencer stated, her eyes glued to whatever she was holding in her hand, "can you grab my computer?"

"What is it, Spence?"

"Can you look up Dougherty's landing?" Spencer asked, showing the girls the small, black pen she was holding in her hand.

Hanna reached forwards, grabbing the laptop from the coffee table as the rest of the girls all moved to squish on the couch together.

"It's a tiny airstrip off of Highway 30" Hanna said, reading the information off the screen.

"Is it close to anything?" Sophie asked.

"No" Hanna sighed, "it's in the middle of nowhere"

"Wait, what did the postcard say?" Spencer asked once again and Sophie could practically hear the clogs turning in her head.

"The Lost Woods Resort" Sophie read from the post card she had quickly retrieved from the bag, "Find us where Greenview meets 30"

"Duncan said that he flew Ali to an airfield the day she disappeared" Aria recounted, "this has to be where she went. Maybe room one"

✦✧✦✧

"I was surprised when you girls pulled up" the man at the reception desk in the Lost Woods Resort – who the girls learnt was called Harold – told them, "people don't come here much anymore since they built the interstate. It doesn't bother me though, I like the quiet"

"Brilliant" Sophie mumbled under her breath.

The girls had made the decision to drive out to the resort in search of any sort of clue that would tell them about Alison, and more especially A.

The motel was located literally in the middle of nowhere and the girls were left with no phone service and no way to call for help if they needed it. Sophie thought that the desolated motel was a pretty good fit for someone like A, the place looked as if it hadn't had any visitors in years.

"Sign here" Harold said once again, bringing the blonde back to reality, "Welcome to the Lost Woods Resort, Mary Smith"

"Is room one available?" Spencer wondered.

"How do you know about room one?"

Harold's question had a chill running down Sophie's spine.

"Is there something special about that room?" Sophie asked.

"It's got the hottest water. Perfect for nights like this"

"Oh, our friend, the one that told us about this place stayed in room one" Spencer said, "maybe you remember her. Vivian Darkbloom?"

Harold was silent for a second before answering, "Name doesn't ring a bell. Besides, I learnt a long time ago not to tell tales about folks who stay here. You check into the Lost Woods because you don't wanna be found"

With that, the five girls made their way out of reception, heading back out into the pouring rain. As soon as she stepped outside, goosebumps rose on Sophie's skin and she wasn't quite sure it was because of the creepy vibe she got from the place or because of the harsh rain pelting down on her skin.

The girls began to take off in a sprint, rushing towards the small shelter of the balcony that hung over the ground floor level of rooms. However, their quick pace cause Hanna to slip in some mud, sending the blonde girl hurling towards the ground.

"Are you okay?" Sophie called out to her fellow blonde behind her.

"Yeah" Hanna nodded, quickly standing back up.

"I'm not sure what we're supposed to be looking for" Aria muttered once the girls came to a stop behind the door of room one.

"Ali left Ian to come up here for a reason" Spencer said, taking out the room key and unlocking the door, "what was it?"

The room was simple at best. A double bed was pressed against the left wall and a small cabinet supporting a T.V (which Sophie was convinced didn't work) was directly opposite it. Apart from a couple drawers placed on either side of the bed, the room was completely empty.

The five didn't waste any time, quickly rummaging through every possible hiding place. They were looking through the drawers, in the cupboards, under the bed, in the bed.

But they didn't find a single thing.

"Love how they call this place a resort" Emily scoffed, "do you think Ali came here to hide something?"

"Or came here to hide from A?" Aria asked.

"We need to get into that office" Spencer told the girls, "was Ali here alone or did she come with somebody?"

"Is he still there?" Sophie asked, moving to stand besides Spencer at the window.

"I think he left" Spencer replied, "I'm dying to get a look at the registration book"

With a sigh, Sophie picked up her already dripping jacket, shrugging it over her shoulders.

"Wait, are you gonna come with me?" Spencer asked.

"Does it look like those three are moving?" Sophie sighed, nodding in the direction where Aria, Emily and Hanna were all huddled on the bed.

"I'm cold" Emily defended.

"Me too"

"Hey, no, I'm colder than both of them are" Hanna said, hugging the towel she was using to dry herself tighter around her body.

Sophie followed Spencer back out into the rain, holding her jacket over her head as the two girls ran back towards the reception area.

When they finally reached the door, Sophie pulled out her phone, using her flashlight to try and at least see something. The brunette reached out to try the door, and to no surprise it was locked.

"We're gonna have to go through the window" Spencer muttered, pointing towards the window next to the girls.

"You're kidding right?"

Spencer in fact was not kidding.

The blonde followed after Spencer, pushing herself up to shimmy through the awkwardly place window, her phone in her mouth as she did so.

"How do you make climbing through a window look graceful?" Spencer raised her eyebrows towards the blonde once the two were in the room.

"I had a secret relationship for nearly a year" Sophie shrugged simply, using her phone to look around the room.

The place really gave her the creeps.

Sophie pointed the flashlight on her phone towards a painting of a woman that looked a little too realistic for the blonde's liking.

"Is it my or is she staring at us?"

Spencer didn't reply to Sophie's comment, simply shaking her head she pulled the blonde behind the desk that Harold was stood behind earlier. It didn't take Spencer long to locate the book they had used to sign in.

"Try go back to Labour day weekend" Sophie whispered to Spencer as the brunette started to flick through the pages.

"There" Sophie said again, stopping Spencer and pointing at the one familiar name that stood out to them, "Vivian Darkbloom"

The girls' heads snapped up when they heard footsteps padding outside the door.

"We need to get out of here" Spencer muttered.

"Are - are there any other names in here that we know?" Sophie asked, "scratch that, just take the whole book"

✦✧✦✧

"Ali stayed here twice" Spencer said the next morning, the book that the two had stolen from reception out on the bed in front of them, "and the first time was the day she was supposed to be meeting A in Brookehaven. Coincidence? I think not"

"If Ali wanted to hide this would be the place to do it" Sophie said, "it doesn't exactly scream Alison"

"She still hasn't called you back?" Hanna asked Emily, noticing the girl's distant look as she held her phone in her hand. Last night when Sophie and Spencer had been getting the sign in book, Maya had called Emily but due to the lack of cell service, the tanned girl hadn't been able to accept her call.

"My mom isn't even home yet and I'm lying to her" Emily sighed, dropping her phone on the bed, "she thinks I'm staying at your house"

"Well, that works" Aria told her, "Because your mom thinks I stayed at yours"

"We're not stealing that are we?" Emily asked, gesturing towards the book.

"No we'll put it back" Spencer replied.

"We?" Sophie asked, "Spence, you're not gonna make me climb through hat window again are you?"

"I will do it, i just need you to stand guard" Spencer told her, "come on, we're team Spenphie"

"Spenphie?" Sophie asked in disbelief, "really?"

"We will work on the name later" Spencer dismissed, "just please come with me"

"Fine" Sophie huffed.

✦✧✦✧

"This is the perfect place for A to hide" Aria noted as the girls stood in the middle of the school auditorium which had now been turned into the perfect venue for the masquerade ball.

The auditorium had been decorated in red, black, gold and white. Fake trees where dotted around the dance floor in perfect lines making it feel like you had just stepped into a real life fairytale. A crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling, above the middle of the main dance floor, illuminating the entire room in specks of golden light.

Sophie's dress was a gorgeous floor-length red gown. The top half of her dress was covered in tiny, red gemstones scattering all the way from the waist to the top of the strapless, heartline cut. If she was being honest, Sophie felt like a princess and the thirteen year old in her was screaming at the fact she got to dress like a princess for the night.

If only the night was going to be as magical.

"Where was Melissa when you left?" Hanna asked, turning to Spencer.

"In her pajamas, curled up on the couch" Spencer told them.

"Guys we have to find A before A finds us" Emily said as the girls started to descend the stairs.

"We are still in agreement, right?" Aria asked, "no matter what happens at midnight we stick together, and we are not giving up that phone"

"That's five against one, I like those odds" Sophie said.

"Should we split up and look around?" Spencer asked.

"None of us have dates, so..."

"Let's meet back here in an hour" Aria suggested, "and keep your phones close"

Sophie quickly broke off from the group, heading in a random direction, towards the dance floor. The blonde swiftly moved in between the dancing couples, trying to put names to faces – or well names to masks, desperately trying to remember who was wearing what to try and make finding A that little bit easier.

The blonde was nearing the edge of the dance floor when she felt a pair of hands on her waist from behind, spinning her around to face whoever was behind her.

Sophie was nearly ready to punch whoever touched her when she finally realised it was her boyfriend.

"What are you doing here?" Sophie asked, unable to stop the smile creeping on her face, "I thought these type of things weren't your scene"

"There not" Jason replied, hands never heaving her waist, "but I can't leave my girl going without a dance can I?"

My girl. Oh my god.

"You look absolutely gorgeous" Jason said again, his eyes wandering down her body.

"Thank you" Sophie replied, biting her lip, "you don't look too bad yourself"

And that was the truth. Jason was dressed to the nines in his black suit and white dress shirt. He wore a black mask similar to Sophie's red one and the blonde could only see his green eyes – not that she was complaining, she loved his eyes.

"I'm sorry about last night" Sophie said, her voice barely above a whisper as she looked down at their feet as they swayed to the song, "it's hard to explain right now, but I promise I will explain everything soon"

"It's okay" Jason replied, his voice soft as he lifted Sophie's head, making her look into his eyes once more.

Has she mentioned that she loves his eyes?

"I don't need to know everything happening in your life, but just promise me one thing?"

"What?"

"Don't do anything stupid" Jason smiled, "if you need anything, you call me, okay?"

"Okay" Sophie nodded, "I love you"

"I love you" Jason replied, leaning down to place a gentle kiss on Sophie's lips.

✦✧✦✧

Sophie's dance with Jason was interrupted when Spencer literally dragged her away from the dance floor, hauling her in the direction of Mona.

"Spence" Sophie whined, "this better be important"

"It is" Spencer replied, "A wasn't watching Ali in Brookhaven, Ali was watching A"

"What?"

"I'll explain properly on the way" Spencer said, a little out of breath, "we're heading to the Lost Woods"

Sophie silently followed Spencer and Mona out to the latter girl's car, hopping into the backseat as Mona took off in a hurry.

Her heart was beating out of her chest and a million thoughts were rushing through her head.

Was this about to be it? Were they finally going to catch A?

The ride to the Lost Woods Resort was silent, apart from Spencer filling in the blanks for Sophie. Turns out, Mona had seen Alison in Brookhaven the summer she went missing, spying on someone outside of a random street, and Spencer was quick to put it together that Alison was watching A.

Mona quickly pulled into the parking lot at the motel, all three girls practically jumping out of the car and heading to room 2 – the room directly next to the one the girls had stayed in the night before.

The thought made Sophie sick.

Upon entering the room, Sophie's breath got caught in her throat. There were pictures upon pictures off all the girls. Sophie, Spencer, Emily, Aria, Hanna – even Alison. The pictures were plastered all over the walls, covering them from floor to ceiling.

Sophie's eyes scanned over the room, seeing pictures of Toby, Caleb, Ezra and Jason. Seeing her boyfriend's picture on the walls of A's lair made Sophie's hands tremble, even the thought of Jason becoming a victim of A was enough for the blonde to want to pack up their bags and move as far from Rosewood as they could.

Along with the pictures were various different costumes, including the infamous one that Noel Kahn was wearing when he and Ali came up with the prank to scare the girls a few Halloween's ago.

Next to the costumes was a clothing rack stacked with numerous pairs of black hoodies and pants.

The creepiest thing in Sophie's opinion was the shire of Ali's pictures. Some of them had her eyes scratched out, whilst others were still untouched.

"What the hell?" Sophie whispered.

"This is A's lair" Spencer breathed out, walking further into the room, looking around the pictures.

Sophie followed Spencer's steps, fingers brushing over a few of the pictures on the walls.

"Guys this has to be A's costume" Mona said from behind them, holding up a piece of paper with a sketch of a black swan costume on it, "I'll call Hanna"

"A's dressed as the black swan" Spencer said.

"Gum?" Mona asked suddenly, holding out a packet of gum in front of the girls.

"I'm good thanks" Sophie replied, eyes cautiously watching Mona as she shrugged, stuffing the gum packet into her pocket.

Something wasn't adding up. They were missing something.

Sophie just didn't know what.

The blonde moved around the room, spotting the familiar pink book lying on the shelf of Ali's shrine.

"Spence" Sophie called out, gaining her friends attention, "this is Ali's diary"

Spencer was quick to join the blonde, the two had their back to Mona as they flipped through the journal. Pages upon pages of Ali's messy handwriting scribbled onto the pages.

This is how A knows things only Ali did.

Sophie felt herself freeze up when the pages flipped over once more revealing something sticking out between the two pages.

Gum wrapper.

The two shared a knowing look as Spencer turned back to Mona.

"Actually can I have that gum?" Spencer asked.

"Sure!" Mona replied, taking the gum packet out of her pocket once more, "Oh, you know, I think I have more in the car. I'll be right back"

Sophie's eyes stayed on Mona as she left the room, and once she was gone, the blonde turned to her best friend.

"It's Mona"

"What?" Spencer asked, eyebrows furrowed.

"Spencer think about it" Sophie whispered back, "Ali was in Brookhaven because of those ad's in the paper, and who was there? Spencer the fucking gum"

Mona fucking Vanderwall was A.

"We need to get out of here" Spencer muttered.

However, Sophie heard footsteps nearing the door and sure enough, Mona reappeared in the doorway, this time dressed in black clothing.

Dressed as A.

"I found the gum" Mona huffed, her voice much more serious now.

"You didn't call Hanna did you?" Spencer asked, her voice shaking.

"You didn't call Hanna because you're A" Sophie added on, her shaky breath matching her shaking hands.

"Congratulation" Mona snarked, "you figured it out"

Sophie didn't have time to react before Mona whacked her around the head, knocking her out cold.

✦✧✦✧

Sophie's eyes struggled to flutter open, a piercing pain was throbbing on the side of her head. She slowly raised her hand, pressing it to the side of her head emitting a cry of pain to leave her lips as she did so. As far as she could tell, there was no blood.

Once she managed to open her eyes, it took her a while to acknowledge her surroundings. Her eyes regained focus and she realised she was in the back of a car that Sophie could tell was Mona's.

The blonde kept her head resting on the seat, trying her best to make out the muffled voices coming from in front of her.

"Spence?" Sophie muttered, her throat dry and the words burning as they came out, "Spencer?"

"Oh, she's awake" a voice that didn't belong to Spencer replied, "nice of you to finally join us"

Sophie pushed herself up from where she was uncomfortably lying, gripping the back of the passenger seat when her surroundings started spinning from the dizziness.

"I still don't understand" Sophie finally heard Spencer say, "how could you do all that stuff to us? You – you almost killed Hanna, I thought she was your friend"

"It's easier to forgive an enemy than it is to forgive a friend" Mona replied, her grip on the steering wheel tightening.

"How did you do it?" Sophie asked from the backseat, "how could you be everywhere? You were always one step ahead of us"

"You're not the only genius in this car Spencer" Mona scoffed, "you bitches underestimated me"

Sophie gasped as Mona turned another sharp turner without ever slowing down, causing the blonde to be thrown across the backseat. However, as she did so, Sophie caught glimpse of the cellphone Spencer was holding in her hand, her screen showing the ongoing call with Aria.

"You're going to fast" Sophie stated, "we're never going to make it to Lookout point if you don't slowdown"

"Is this some kind of payback?" Spencer spoke once more, her voice trembling now, "about Ali? About everything we let her do to you?"

"I am so over Ali, I already told you the bitch is dead to me" Mona replied, "she was never my friend, but Hanna was, and you bitches took her from me"

"This is about betrayal?" Sophie asked from the back seat.

"It's not about betrayal Sophie, it's about revenge" Mona snapped, pressing her foot further down on the gas pedal, "you deserved everything you got! You stole my only friend!"

"Mona she is still your friend!" Spencer shouted.

"Okay" Sophie nodded, her chest growing increasingly tighter, "so what's the plan? I mean A always has a plan, right?"

"Yes" Mona smirked back, glancing in the mirror to look at Sophie, "she does"

"Melissa doesn't have your dads gun" Mona said, talking directly to Spencer now, "I do. When Ali left, it pulled you guys apart, it'll be the same if you go away"

Sophie was catching onto Mona's plans by now. She wanted to make one of the girls disappear, make it like Ali's disappearance all over again. And she was sure Mona was going to frame her for it.

"No, it won't" Spencer denied shaking her head.

Sophie could see the brunette's hand itching towards the handbrake, knowing what her friend was going to do, Sophie prepared for the sudden impact.

Spencer's hand wrapped around the handbrake, giving it one hard tug bringing the car to a complete stop. Sophie's head banged again the seat in front of her, sending another sharp pain through her head.

Sophie let out a cry of pain, her hand shooting up to hold her nose. This time however, her hand became wet with a sticky, red substance.

But there was no time to worry about that right now.

Spencer was the first to exit the car, rushing around to open Sophie's own door for her. The brunette wrapped her hands around Sophie's arm, helping her push herself out of the car.

Once they were both out, the two took off running.

However, Mona was quick to run after them.

Sophie could hear the approaching sound of a car engine, and headlights soon flooded the area as Aria's car hurled around the corner, quickly approaching Mona.

Mona looked furious as she stared at through the windscreen at the other girls in the car. Sophie practically saw it click in Mona's head once she realised what Spencer had done.

Mona screamed, loud, as she pelted towards Spencer and Sophie who were standing dangerously close to the edge of Lookout Point.

The two girls linked their arms, trying their best to escape Mona's oncoming attack. However, they just weren't quick enough.

Mona soon caught up to the girls, literally jumping on Spencer sending her tumbling to the ground and seeing as Sophie's arm was interlinked with the brunettes, she was pushed to the ground too.

"Get up!" Mona screamed at the two girls, forcing them both to stand up.

"Spence!" Sophie shouted, pushing her friend away from Mona and away from the edge.

However, what Sophie didn't exactly count on was Mona launching herself at Sophie instead, sending the girl to the cliff's edge. Sophie was pinned up against the tree, wriggling in order to try and get out of Mona's grasp.

Mona wasn't giving up either, she was desperately trying to throw Sophie over the edge.

Sophie didn't exactly know how it happened, but it did.

The blonde shoved Mona off of her, however, it caused the girl to loose her balance, sending her over the edge.

"Hang on!" Sophie shouted, arm reaching out to grab ahold of Mona's arm, trying her best to pull the girl back up.

But it was a feeble attempt.

Mona's wrist slipped from Sophie's grip, their hands barely touching as the blonde felt Mona's fingers slip through her own. Sophie watched in shock as Mona fell. It was like it was happening in slow motion, the look of horror in Mona's eyes, the scream leaving her parted lips, arms flailing around as she descended.

"No!"

But there was nothing she could do except was as Mona fell. Hard.

Sophie felt a pair of arms wrap around her, pulling her away from the edge. The blonde couldn't tear her eyes away from the edge, barely even feeling the other pairs or arms wrapping tightly around her.

"Hey" Sophie heard someone say, maybe it was Aria, or Emily she wasn't exactly sure. A pair of hands were placed on Sophie's cheeks, directing her gaze away from the cliff edge and onto the person standing in front of her.

"Sophie are you okay?" Spencer muttered as Sophie looked up at her. Spencer's hands were warm against Sophie's now wet cheeks.

"I-" Sophie stuttered, head shaking as she tried to comprehend what had just happened, "she - what"

"It's okay" Spencer muttered, pulling Sophie into her, arms wrapping tightly around Sophie's trembling body, "we're okay"

✦✧✦✧

The following events was a complete blur to Sophie, she wasn't sure what was real and what wasn't. She just sat in the back of an ambulance, staring blankly at the spot where Mona had disappeared off.

"She's in shock" she heard someone say. A sweet voice she recognised but she couldn't quite place who it belonged to, "it's okay, you're safe now"

Finally looking away from that spot, Sophie's vision focused on what was in front of her, or rather who.

"Dr. Sullivan?"

Her voice was hoarse, her throat dried up from all the creaming and crying.

"Are you all okay?"

"We tried to find you" Emily said, her voice weak.

"What did she do to you? Where have you been?" Spencer asked, her question coming out all at once.

"She threatened my son, I didn't think I had a choice, I needed to leave" Dr Sullivan explained and Sophie couldn't even begin to image the torment Mona had put her through – that A had put her through.

"Hanna" the woman spoke again, this time turning to the blonde that stood besides Sophie, "it's all right, you're safe now"

Hanna could no longer hold back her tears as she cried in Dr Sullivan's arms.

"I can't believe this" Hanna cried, "she was my friend"

"It's okay" Dr Sullivan assured, "it's over now"

It's over now.

The words sounded foreign to Sophie. Ever since this whole thing begun, the blonde could only dream of what life without A would be like. She had grown so used to cowering everytime her phone buzzed and constantly checking over her shoulder that she had forgotten what it felt like to be normal.

It was all over.

Sophie let out a shaky breath, one that had been holding in for far to long as the tears began to leak from her eyes once more. A pair of arms wrapped around her shoulders once again, pulling her in. Sophie leant her head on Spencer's shoulder as the two cried together.

The blonde outstretched her other arm, pulling Emily into her, soon followed by Aria and then Hanna. The five girls huddled together, neither of them saying anything – they didnt have to.

The same words repeating in Sophie's head again and again.

It's over. It's all over.

Their moment was interrupted by some commotion coming from where Mona had fallen and Sophie froze. She thought this was it, she thought they were about to drag Mona's body out.

Sophie held her breath, clutching Spencer tighter as they waited to hear something, anything.

However, Sophie was not expecting to hear the following words, but she was glad she did.

"She's alive"

Mona was alive.

✦✧✦✧

"She was living in a perpetual state of hyper reality, the adrenaline rush that accompanied her feelings of empowerment and her high levels of intelligence, fueled Mona's ability to be seemingly all-knowing and omnipresent" Doctor Sullivan explained.

All five girls had been taken to the police station in order to give their statements about what had happened that night. All Sophie wanted to do was go home and curl up in bed with Jason, ignoring everyone and everything for the foreseeable future.

Sophie distantly listened to what doctor Sullivan was saying, barely understanding half of the words that were leaving her mouth.

"Will she always be like this?" Hanna asked.

Sophie glanced at the two way mirror the girls were standing behind, catching a glace at Mona on the other side. She was stoic, no emotion was on her face as she stared blankly in front.

"With the right therapy and the right medications, people with these personality disorders can get better" Doctor Sullivan told them.

After a few more brief conversations with a couple of officers, the girls were free to go. Doctor Sullivan walked the girls out of the police station.

The minute Sophie stepped outside, her eyes locked on Jason, who was leaning against his car. After hearing the doors open, Jason's head snapped up, finally looking at his girlfriend.

"Soph" Jason shouted, and the blonde wasted no more time before she practically ran at him.

"Are you okay?" Jason muttered as he held Sophie's body close to his, scared of what would happen if he let her go.

"I am now" Sophie muttered, her arms tightly wrapped around his neck, "I'm so sorry for not telling you about-"

"Don't" Jason said, cutting her off. He pulled back slightly so that she could look at her, bit his hands never moved from her hips, "Toby explained everything"

"Toby?" Sophie asked.

Jason nodded somewhere behind Sophie and she turned her head to see Toby standing with Spencer, arms tightly around the brunette girl.

"All that matters is that you're okay" Jason said again, his fingers resting underneath Sophie chin.

Sophie stood up on her toes, nudging her face forwards to capture his lips in a kiss.

Once the two broke apart, Sophie turned her attention back to her friends.

"Are you okay?" Jason asked again, this time his question was directed towards Spencer.

The brunette shot Jason a small smile, gently nodding her head.

The two had a complicated relationship, there was no guide book on how you were supposed to react when you found out you had a sibling you didn't know about. Sophie knew Jason was never the best at showing his emotions, that was reserved solely for Sophie. But even then, the blonde could tell that Jason cared about his sister deep down.

"Are you gonna be okay at home tonight?" Aria asked Hanna, the five girls now parting ways with Doctor Sullivan.

"I know Mona's A, I just keep seeing that faceless person in the black hoodie" Hanna muttered.

"Let's sleep at my place" Emily suggested, "my mom will be thrilled to have a reason to cook"

Sophie glanced up at Jason, inside the blonde knew that the best place to be right now was with her friends, however part of her wanted to spend the night with the company of her boyfriend.

"Go" Jason told her, "you should be with your friends tonight, I'm not going anywhere"

"Thank you" Sophie smiled up at him.

The blonde placed one last kiss on his lips before bidding him good-bye. She watched as she climbed into his car before driving off.

"This feels like old times" Spencer smiled as the five walked through the town, heading for Emily's house.

However, the girl's should've know by now that nothing stayed calm for long.

Upon turning down Emily's street, the girls were met with a small crowd gathering outside of Emily's house, red and blue police lights lighting up the street.

Emily detached herself from the group, lifting her dress up as she quickly ran towards her house, pushing past all of the people gathered outside.

The girls were quick to follow, brushing past the crowd and the police officers cornering off the house with police tape. Emily's mom was quick to exit to house, moving to greet her daughter in front of the house.

All five girls ducked under the police tape, coming to a stop outside of the small fence surrounding the Field's household.

"What's happening?" Emily breathlessly asked, "what's going on?"

"Honey, they found a body" Pam told her daughter, "they think it's - it's Maya"

Just as Pam broke the news, the police were wheeling out a body bag on a stretcher, Maya's body inside.

The girls watched, frozen in place as the stretcher was loaded into a van.

Sophie watched helplessly as Emily practically collapsed, her chest heaving as she sobbed. The four girls wrapped their arms tightly around Emily, holding her up as her knees threatened to give way.

Everything was supposed to be over.
