she thought she could get away with it. if her cards were played right, no one would suspect her, because why would they? after all, most evil masterminds aren't sixteen. that must make her special, then. y/n was so careful, from every call to every interception. standing there, in this very moment, she felt frozen. like the hands of time completely stopped, leaving her to fend on her own. she'd never admit it, but y/n knew she had been sloppy these past few weeks, leaving room for suspicion to arise.
peter parker, age seventeen, or simply put, her best friend. less simply put, superhero of new york city. she'd figured that out just a little while after the spider bite. it wasn't hard to find out, the boy had never been good at keeping secrets, and he was even worse at hiding the fact that he was the masked vigilante swinging around the city clad in spandex.
"it's not easy living a double life," peter would sigh, and she would roll her eyes discreetly, because she knew that better than anyone else. secrets were hard to keep, especially to loved ones. for y/n l/n, she had no other choice but to comply. she had started this unbeknownst to what it really was. however, she fully intended to finish the game.
classic cat and mouse chase, except this cat was oblivious to being chased.
peter had been her best friend since before being a superhero was even in the question. y/n had been a villain since before peter was even in the question. the thing was, if peter was a superhero, he was also rendered a nuisance. the only reason she kept him around was so she was so she could get her hands on the inside information. who else would he go to besides his best friend for help? no one else knew about his superheroism.
every single word he uttered that had to do with his plans, she soaked it up. every bit of knowledge she could get, y/n held it close to her, settling in the back of her mind.
time and time again, he would go out to follow through with his plans, and time and time again they would get foiled. peter would flop onto his bed after a long day, complaining about the same thing; "they know my every move. it's like they're watching me." and y/n would shrug and respond, "they just might be," with a smirk hidden under her lips.
some days y/n would lay awake on her bed, staring at the ceiling above her, both pitying herself and peter.
she knew he would find out eventually, and she dreaded the arrival of that day, but never did y/n expect that day would be today.
she stood in her room, slipping her phone back into her pocket, facing the wide-eyed brunette that stood there, she gave him an apologetic smile. words she would never be able to say were spelt out in her eyes, as she dared to hold eye contact. things would never be the same, but she knew that, she knew that the day she started this.
a small part of her, the same part that sparked hope on those sad days, gave her a thought. a hope, that maybe she could get away with it again.
