Letter five: May

Their faces were so close. Lily's heart raced in anticipation, her breath catching in her chest.

But to her surprise, Marcus suddenly stood up, a look of doubt crossing his face.

He awkwardly mumbled something about a mistake and started walking away, leaving Lily dumbfounded and confused.

His parting words echoed in her mind, "Oh, and... don't give up on painting."

As she lay in bed that night, thoughts of Marcus consumed her, school the next day be damned. Little did she know, Marcus was also plagued by thoughts of her, their connection pulling at his heartstrings.

The next day at school, Lily and Davina remained at odds, barely exchanging a word. Lily had no intention of making amends, feeling hurt by Davina's words. However, something seemed to have changed with Marcus.

He was no longer avoiding eye contact, and to everyone's surprise, he was even flashing a few smiles.

During lunch, Lily chose to sit alone, nursing her wounds in solitude. But she couldn't escape the intense gaze of Marcus, who seemed fixated on her.

Frustrated and slightly embarrassed, Lily mouthed, "What are you doing?" while rolling her eyes.

Marcus couldn't resist the challenge of their silent exchange, determined to break through the barrier of confusion.

His eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he attempted to convey his message through exaggerated gestures and exaggerated mouthing.

Lily watched the spectacle unfold, a mix of amusement and bewilderment playing on her face. It was like watching a mime performance gone hilariously wrong. Marcus contorted his face into comical expressions, his hands flailing in the air with exaggerated gestures. Each attempt only seemed to add to the comedic chaos.

Finally, in an act of surrender, Marcus abandoned his food tray and boldly made his way to Lily's table. A mischievous grin stretched across his face as he playfully declared, "I said, want some company, you airhead."

His words hung in the air, laced with humor and a touch of affection.

Lily couldn't resist a smile, even as she retorted, "Thanks, but I'm good on my own," munching on the food before her.

Marcus wouldn't be deterred, teasingly remarking, "You wouldn't let me go yesterday." His words caught Lily off guard, causing her to sputter on her water.

"You liked being with me too..." Lily quipped, struggling to come up with a witty comeback.

Marcus confessed, "I did. It's been a while since I've had a deep conversation with someone..." A flicker of sadness momentarily clouded his eyes, hinting at a hidden vulnerability. But he quickly regained his playful demeanor, suggesting they head to class.

Lily couldn't help but notice the pattern. When their connection grew deeper, when sentiments of affection and understanding stirred between them, Marcus would retreat. Did he really believe that he couldn't love anyone?

Classes flew by in a whirlwind, but Lily was in for one more surprise as she stepped out of her last class. There was Marcus, sprinting towards her with an air of mischief. She couldn't help but chuckle.

"Are you trying to scare me?" Lily asked, but instead of being scared, she found herself surprised by Marcus's actions.

"Didn't you usually take the other way out of school?" he asked, a hint of disappointment in his voice.

"Yeah, but change is good, don't you think?" Lily replied, a smile playing on her lips. She was glad she had chosen a different path, preventing Marcus from successfully startling her.

"Not this time. Now part of the surprise is gone," Marcus responded, a tinge of regret in his voice.

Curiosity bubbling inside her, Lily asked, "What surprise?"

"There's a haunted house that just opened at the amusement park. I wanted to ask if you'd maybe want to go with me, you know, to cheer you up," Marcus said, his words carrying a touch of sincerity.

"Okay, I'll accept, but on one condition," Lily said, building anticipation. "We have to ride the roller coasters too!"

"Deal!" Marcus agreed, and with that, they headed to the amusement park.

As the day transitioned into evening, the amusement park underwent a mind-blowing transformation.

The sunset cast a warm, golden glow over everything, turning the whole place into a magical wonderland.

The air was filled with the mouthwatering smells of street food, making it impossible to resist the temptation.

Colors were popping everywhere, like a scene straight out of a movie. It was like being transported into a dream.

But amidst all the excitement, there it stood — the haunted house. It was like a dark, mysterious cloud looming over the park.

The atmosphere around it changed completely. The colors seemed to fade away, and a cool breeze sent chills down Lily's spine.

The haunted house was calling out to her with its spooky charm. It was a labyrinth of scares, filled with surprises at every corner.

The creepy vibes were inescapable. Lily cautiously stepped inside, her heart racing, and goosebumps covering her arms. Every creaking sound and eerie whisper made her nerves tingle.

As they ventured inside, a terrifying clown leaped out, prompting her to scream in fear. Instinctively, she grabbed Marcus's arm like a princess clutching her knight, her embarrassment mounting as she quickly released her grip.

Yet, the adrenaline coursing through her veins compelled her to hold on tightly once again as another frightful figure emerged.

Blushing in the darkness, their hands intertwined, making Lily's heart pound, not knowing if it was from the fear or from their hands.

Lily's initial plan of revenge through hand-holding, trying to hold his hand as hard as possible, but she quickly realized the genuine comfort she found in Marcus's presence.

She couldn't deny the sense of security he provided, even if she didn't want to admit it.

"Damn," Lily murmured quietly, scolding herself for relying on him so much, though secretly enjoying it. She couldn't help but acknowledge the strength she found in him, even when she resisted.

As they emerged from the frightful maze of the haunted house, Lily's heart raced and her breath came in heavy gasps.

Marcus, however, remained composed, seemingly unaffected by the chilling experience. She marveled at his fearlessness, but pride prevented her from acknowledging it.

"Now it's my turn to have some fun!" Lily exclaimed, her excitement contagious as she instinctively held on to Marcus's hand, their fingers still intertwined from earlier.

The breeze had turned chilly, tinting the tip of Lily's nose with a rosy hue. With eager anticipation, she pointed towards the towering roller coaster, ready for the thrill it promised.

Marcus sighed inwardly, aware of his susceptibility to motion sickness, a fact he hadn't shared with Lily.

Yet, he couldn't bear to dampen her enthusiasm. Suppressing his discomfort, he joined her on the roller coaster, their hearts pounding in sync as the ride propelled them through loops and twists, leaving their hair tousled and their spirits exhilarated.

After a day of thrilling adventures, their energy reserves depleted, they sought to replenish themselves at a bustling Chinese food street!

The tantalizing aroma of sizzling dishes enveloped them, arousing their taste buds and stirring their appetites.

"This looks amazing," Lily remarked, her eyes wandering over the enticing array of food before them. She couldn't wait to eat.

Marcus nodded, his own anticipation evident. "The textures are incredible too. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside."

Lily mustered the courage to speak, her voice soft and tender. As she began, Marcus's gaze fell upon Lily, the world around them seemed to fade into the background, the flavors of the food forgotten in an instant.

In that stolen moment, the chilly night air wrapped around them, the cold breeze whispered through their bodies, but in their shared gaze, they discovered a warmth that melted away the cold.

The twinkle of the lights above seemed to pale in comparison to the radiance that emanated from Lily, captivating Marcus's every sense.

The taste of the food became an afterthought, for he found himself intoxicated by her presence alone. Every glance, every word exchanged, he sensed a stirring within him, an undeniable connection that he had been trying to suppress.

Yet, in her presence, he couldn't help but be drawn to her like a moth to a flame. But he pushed those thoughts aside, burying them beneath a smile.

"Hey..." Lily started, her words carrying a weight of gratitude and affection. The corners of her lips curled into a heartfelt smile, and Marcus felt his heart skip a beat.

"I..." she continued, her voice filled with sincerity, "Thank you. Thank you for all of this." Her words hung in the air, a testament to the depth of her appreciation.

Marcus chuckled, attempting to lighten the conversation, to evade the intensity of the moment.

"I'm glad it was worth it. I was beginning to wonder if you liked the haunted house," he teased, his eyes glimmering with a playful spark.

But Lily was determined, unwilling to let him deflect the significance of their connection. "No," she said, her gaze unwavering, "I mean, thank you for bringing me here. Thank you for... thinking of me." Her voice carried a blend of vulnerability and conviction.

Marcus opened his mouth to respond, to express the feelings he had been suppressing, but his words failed him. Instead, he placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, his smile radiant with unspoken emotions. His touch conveyed a gratitude that words could never capture.

"I should be the one thanking you," he finally managed to say, his voice filled with sincerity. "I don't know if I would have any friends if it weren't for you. You made me realise that life has so much to offer, and amazing people." His grip on her shoulder tightened ever so slightly, conveying his appreciation and the depth of their connection.

Lily felt a warmth spread through her, his words igniting a flicker of joy within her.

"I'm glad we became friends too," she replied, her voice filled with genuine affection. "I don't know how it happened or why, but I'm grateful for it."

In that moment, they shared a silent understanding, a bond that surpassed words. It was a friendship built on shared experiences, unspoken support, and the knowledge that they had each enriched the other's life.

Marcus's gaze intensified, his eyes reflecting a newfound determination. "I want to make the most of these next few months," he declared, his voice filled with purpose. "I don't want to waste precious time now. Now, I have a friend."

Lily, ever quick to bring levity, lightened the atmosphere. "So, like a bucket list for the summer?" she playfully suggested.

Marcus nodded, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Yeah, something like that. I want to make the most out of this summer," he affirmed, his gaze locked with Lily's.

A smile blossomed on Lily's face, mirroring the joy that bloomed within her. "Yeah, me too," she agreed wholeheartedly, feeling the weight of their connection and the promise of the adventures that lay ahead.

Yet beneath the surface of their joy, there lingered the knowledge that perhaps their journey had an expiration date.

A/N: I never told you, but I will tell you now. This ride is almost over ;)
