a hard day's night
MADDISON AND CRISTINA WERE AT the canteen counter, picking up their food, after getting the lab results to Bailey.
"I want in on that surgery." Cristina says, aggressively, chewing on a protein bar. "You know, I want it, I want it so bad, I want it so so bad-"
"Okay! Yeah! I get it!" Maddison interrupts. "You want that surgery."
"I want it, I need it." Cristina repeats. "I have to have it."
"Keep this up and you're gonna be know as a brownnoser." Maddison tell her. "And no one likes brownnosers."
"Whatever. If I have to kiss ass to get the first surgery, you're gonna be damn sure I'll kiss ass." Cristina says.
"Ha." Maddison replies. "As if the attendings need anymore ass kissing. They all probably already have a god complex and think they're above everyone else. Trust me, I have met attendings and let me tell you, their ego's are the size of Mount Everest."
"Um, can you stop blocking the smoothie station?" A voice speaks up from behind Maddison.
Both girls turn around to see another doctor, in dark blue scrubs, indicating that he was an attending, waiting patiently with his food tray. Maddison's eyes widen.
"Ye-yeah." She stammers, and grabs Cristina and moves out of the way.
"Thanks." The doctor replies, and grabs what he wants from the smoothie station, and then turns around. "And a little tip for the next time you're talking about a specific group of people make sure that one of them is not standing behind you. Okay?"
"Yes sir." Maddison lets out, as Cristina tries not to laugh.
"THIS SHIFT IS A MARATHON, not a sprint, eat." George tells Izzie as he sits down.
"I can't." She sighs.
"You should eat something." He repeats.
"You try eating after performing seventeen rectal exams." Izzie replies. "The nazi hates me."
"I mean, not that hard to." Maddison jokes, and Cristina chuckles from beside her.
"The nazi's a resident. I have attendings hating me." George tells them.
"Wow, you guys work fast." Maddison comments. "What's it been? Like not even 10 hours?"
Cristina snorts.
"You're one to talk." She says.
"Oh, shut up, that attending did not hate me." Maddison snaps back.
"Really? Could've fooled me." Cristina smirks. "Also, where was this tone when you were talking to the attending?"
"The attending is the superior of our superior." Maddison tells her. "You are just a bitch."
Cristina pokes her tongue out at her and opens up her book, sipping her soda.
"You know Meredith is inbred?" Cristina asks.
"No, really?" Maddison comments, and Cristina narrows her eyes at her.
"Like it's uncommon around here to be a doctor's-" George starts saying.
"No, I mean royally inbred." Cristina tells him.
"Her mother is Ellis Grey." Maddison adds.
"Shut up, the Ellis Grey?" Izzie asks.
"Uh-huh." Cristina nods.
"Who's Ellis Grey?" George asks, making the three girls chuckle in disbelief.
"The Grey method? Where'd you go to med school, Mexico?" Cristina asks him.
"She was one of the first big chick surgeons." Maddison says.
"She practically invented the abdominal-" Izzie tells him.
"She's a living legend, she won the Harper Avery. Twice." Cristina gushes.
"So I didn't know one thing." George comments.
"Talk about parental pressure." Izzie wonders.
"I would kill to have Ellis Grey as a mother." Cristina says. "I would kill to be Ellis Grey. All I need is one good case."
"Katie Bryce is a pain in the ass." Meredith complains, as she sits down. "If I hadn't taken the Hippocratic oath, I'd Kevorkian her with my bare hands." She looks up to see everyone watching her. "What?"
Everyone scrambles to do something else.
"Good afternoon, interns." Dr. Burke walks up. "It's posted, but I thought I'd share the good news personally. As you know, the honor of performing the first surgery is reserved for the intern that shows the most promise. As I'm running the O.R. today, I get to make that choice." He looks at all the hopeful faces. "George O'Malley."
"Me?" George stammers out.
"You'll scrub in for an appendectomy this afternoon." Dr. Burke tells him. "Congratulations. Enjoy it."
With that Dr. Burke walks away.
"Did he say me?" George asks, shocked.
Cristina shakes her head.
"I can't decide if I'm upset that I didn't get chosen or happy that you didn't." Maddison tells Cristina and gets a glare in return.
MADDISON OPENS THE DOOR to Chief Webber's office.
"You wanted to see me, Chief-" Maddison trails off as she sees who exactly is in that room.
"Maddy?!" The other person is just surprised.
"Derek?" Maddison lets out. "What are you doing here?"
"Me?" Derek asks. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm here for my residency." Maddison tells him.
"I wanted you two meet here, rather than bump into each other randomly in public." The Chief tells them. "As you can see, Derek, Maddison is here for her residency."
"You were supposed to be doing that at Mayo." Derek says to Maddison in an accusing tone.
"Hey, unbunch your panties, I'm not the Sloan who slept with your-" Maddison gets cut off by Derek's hand on her mouth.
"We've got it from here, Chief." Derek tells him, dragging Maddison out. "Thanks."
"Bye, Chief Webber." Maddison waves as Derek pulls her arm.
"Hey, that hurt." Maddison rubs her arm where Derek had grabbed her as they finally stopped.
"You cannot tell anyone about anything that relates to my life back in New York." Derek cuts right to the chase.
"Oh, why?" Maddison asks. "It was all so very eventful." Maddison teases. "Makes for amazing small talk."
"I'm serious." Derek replies.
"Hey, remember what I used to say when you and Mark used to ask me to keep a secret from Carolyn?" Maddison says. "I take food or-"
"Money as a payment." Derek finishes, pulling out a $100 bill from his pocket. "Yeah, I remember."
"Your secret is safe with me." Maddison tells Derek, who gives her a sarcastic smile.
Maddison pockets the bill and start to walk away.
"Maddy." Derek calls out, making her turn around. "It's nice to see you."
Derek smiles, making her smile back.
"You too, Der." She tells him.
