a hard day's night
"EACH OF YOU COMES HERE today hopeful, wanting in on the game." Dr. Richard Webber, the Chief of Surgery tell the interns. Dr. Webber leads them to an operating room. "A month ago, you were in med school, being taught by doctors. Today... you are the doctors." All the surgical interns walk in and look around. "The 7 years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and worst of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point. Look around you. Say hello to your competition. Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty. Five of you will crack under the pressure. Two of you will be asked to leave. This is your starting line. This is your arena. How well you play... that's up to you."
Maddison Sloan looks around the OR.
Finally, she thinks.
"OKAY, MARTIN, ROBINSON, BOND Hawkins." One resident calls out his interns.
"Only 7 women out of 20." A girl with warm blonde hair says.
"Yeah. I hear one of them's a model." Maddison adds.
"Seriously, that's gonna help with the respect thing?" A Korean girl replies.
"You're Cristina, right?" The blonde asks, and the other girl nods.
"And you're Maddison." Cristina asks Maddison.
"Yep." Maddison replies, turning to the blonde. "Meredith, right?"
"Yeah." Meredith nods.
"Patton, Monroe..." Interns are called.
"Which resident are you assigned to? I got Bailey." Cristina asks.
"The nazi?" Meredith asks.
"Me too." Maddison tells her.
"Same." Meredith says.
"You got the nazi? So did I." A boy speaks up. "At least we'll be tortured together, right?" He continues when no one replies. "I'm George O'Malley." He walks up to the three girls and offers his hand to Meredith. "Uh, we met at the mixer. You had on a black dress with a slit up the side, strappy sandals..." He trails off. "Now you think I'm gay. No, I'm not gay. It's - it's just that you were - you were very unforgettable-"
"O'Malley, Yang, Grey, Sloan, Stevens." A resident calls out.
"And I'm totally forgettable." George completes but none of the girls hear him as they walk towards the resident.
"Bailey?" Cristina asks him.
"End of the hall." He points to a woman who was comparatively shorter and looked harmless.
"That's the nazi?" Cristina asks.
"Are we sure?" Maddison asks.
"I thought the nazi would be a guy." George wonders.
"I thought the nazi would be... the nazi." Meredith adds.
"Maybe it's professional jealousy." A blonde speaks up as she walks ahead. "Maybe she's brilliant, and they call her a nazi because they're jealous. Maybe she's nice."
"Let me guess." Cristina replies. "You're the model."
Maddison snorts.
"Hi, I'm Isobel Stevens, but everyone calls me 'Izzie'." 'Izzie' introduces herself to their resident.
Dr. Bailey looks down at Izzie's hand and looks uninterested.
"I have five rules. Memorize them." She starts, ignoring Izzie's introduction. "Rule number one - don't bother sucking up. I already hate you. That's not gonna change." She points to the stuff on the counter. "Trauma protocol, phone list, pagers - nurses will page you." She starts walking away. "You will answer every page at a run - a run - that's rule number two." All the interns stumble and follow after her after picking up their stuff. "Your first shift starts now and lasts 48 hours. You're interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain. You run labs, write orders, work every second night until you drop, and don't complain." Bailey opens a door. "On-call rooms - attendings hog them. Sleep when you can where you can, which brings me to rule number three. If I'm sleeping, don't wake me unless your patient is actually dying. Rule number four - the dying patient better not be dead when I get there. Not only will you have killed someone, you would have woke me for no good reason. We clear?"
Meredith raises her hand.
"Yes?" Dr. Bailey asks.
"You said five rules. That was only four." Meredith says, just as Dr. Bailey's pager goes off.
"Rule number five - when I move, you move." Dr. Bailey replies, and starts rushing away, all 5 of her interns following.
"Get out of my way!" Dr. Bailey yells.
"WHAT DO WE GOT?" Dr. Bailey asks the EMT in the helicopter.
All of them were on the roof with a gurney to take over the patient.
"Katie Bryce, 15-year-old female, new onset seizures, intermittent for the past week." The EMT replies. "I.V. lost en route, started grand mal seizing as we descended."
"All right, get her on her side." Bailey tells them.
"Izzie, 10 milligrams diazepam I.M." Bailey tells her, and shakes her head, when Izzie looks on the left. "No, no. The white lead is on the right. Righty, whity - smoke over fire. A large-bore I.V. Don't let the blood hemolyze. Let's go!"
"What do we have? A wet fish on dry land." Another doctor walks in.
"Absolutely, Dr. Burke." Dr. Bailey answers.
"Dr. Bailey, let's shotgun her." Dr. Burke tells her, and she nods.
"That means every test in the book - C.T., CBC, chem-7, tox screen." Bailey tells her interns.
"Cristina, Maddison, you're on labs. George, patient work-ups. Meredith, get Katie for a C.T. She's your responsibility now." Bailey tells them.
"Wait. What about me?" Izzie asks.
"Honey, you get to do rectal exams." Bailey replies.
"OH, WHY ARE THEY TAKING so long?" Cristina complains as the two girls waited for the lab results.
Cristina paces around while Maddison flips a magazine.
"It's been 2 minutes." Maddison replies. "Stop pacing."
"I can't." Cristina tells her. "Hey, do you think if we find out what is wrong with Katie Bryce, Bailey's gonna let us scrub in on her surgery?"
"Yeah, sure." Maddison replies, not looking up from her magazine.
"Wait, really?" Cristina's eyes light up.
"Why not?" Maddison asks, casually. "And, maybe after that why don't you go ask the Chief for his favorite scrub cap?"
"Oh, screw you." Cristina scoffs, slumping into the chair next to her.
"Ha, you wish." Maddison winks at Cristina.
"Why do I feel like I've heard the name Sloan somewhere?" Cristina comments.
"I don't know where you could've possibly heard it." Maddison replies. "On that topic, don't you think Grey sounds familiar?"
Cristina looks thoughtful and Maddison hides a smirk.
