I woke up to the blaring, ear piercing sound of my alarm. I grab my phone and quickly turn it off, slowly trying to wake myself up as I become conscious of my surroundings. That's when it hit me– today was my first day of highschool- oh my god! Today was the day I was going into grade nine, and I was…strangely excited? That was a new feeling, that's for sure. I've never been genuinely excited for school before.
I quickly got up and prepared myself for the day, picking out some of my best new clothes to wear on the first day. Time flew by, and eventually, it was time. I was getting a drive to school with my long-time best friend, Joanne. I've known her ever since the start of middle school, and we were both very nervous, yet excited for the start of high school. "Are you ready for today?" I asked as the two of us stepped into the car. Joanne gave me a look. "God no, are you ready Sammy?" She asked back. I laughed a little and shook my head. "not in the slightest, but we'll just have to see what happens, right?"
Before we knew it, the two of us were there, pulling into the main driveway of the school, getting dropped off by the curb in the parking lot. Both Joanne and I quickly stepped out. The two of us both agreed we needed to go inside and look for everyone in our friend group, since we were all meeting up.
I suddenly felt my stomach drop as the realization really started to hit me. I am in highschool now. I knew things were going to be so different from how they were in middle school. Change was going to happen a lot, and I was doing everything I could to mentally prepare myself. I push my brown hair out of my face, and walk inside with Joanne.
As we roamed the halls, we eventually found one of our close friends, Liam. Joanne, Liam, and I were all very close, and we were all scattering around through the halls, looking for our classrooms and trying so hard not to panic. The halls were full of older people in higher grades, and new grade nines like us, and it was quite…intimidating.
After a good 20 minutes of desperately looking for classrooms, the bell rang, and we went off to our homerooms. The first little bit of the day went by surprisingly quickly, with it all mainly just being orientation and getting used to the space, being introduced to new teachers and all that..fun..stuff. Before I knew it, it was lunch already, and I was meeting up with my friend group outside. We met around the back of the school, and found a spot on the ground to sit down at. My friend group consisted of seven people, including myself. These people were Joanne, Liam, Annie, Alice, Lola, Janice, and myself, Sammy.
We sat down outside, the sun shining down on all of us as we talked, ate our lunch and overall just had a good time with each other. Time flew by pretty quick, and about halfway through lunch time, we heard a ruckus not too far from us. We turned around to see what the fuss was about, and I saw that there was a fight breaking out between two girls. A fight. On the FIRST DAY?? These girls were practically tackling each other, and there was a crowd around them, some screaming things like "yeah beat her ass!!" Or "she had it coming, c'mon beat her up!" And other offensive things, and others were trying to pull the girls away from each other. The fight eventually ended when a teacher got involved.
"Wow, a fight on the first day? That's one way to set the mood." Liam said sarcastically, laughing a little. The rest of us nodded in agreement. "I can already tell I am going to just LOVE it here." I said. For the rest of lunch, we all talked and for the most part, had fun.
Little did I know though, that sometimes, throughout highschool, friend groups fight, and break up, and exclude, and bully. Little did I know that there would be so much drama.
Little did I know that from that point on, highschool was just going to get so much worse.
