Tsukishima was sure about a lot of things. He was sure about the things he did in school, volleyball, and just normal day life. But what he wasn’t sure about, was how (Fn) ended up falling in love with him.

I mean, he’s heard the way people describe him. He was mean, usually never thought about anyone but himself, sarcastic, and everyone’s favorite word to describe him: salty. So when he was getting close to (F/n), he was often confused as to why (F/n) never left his side. Usually everyone else, besides the volleyball team, would do everything they can to avoid him as he was known for hurting people’s feelings, even if he never really intended to.

No matter how many warnings she got about him, it never stopped her from getting close to him. Because she believed that you can’t judge a book by its cover and that you must really get to know someone before you can ever make an inference of what their personality may be like.

-

“Hey (F/n)?” one of the students from class 1-4 called out to her. It was in the middle of their break and (F/n) was sitting at her father’s desk while he went out to print out some papers.

“Yes?” (F/n) looked up from the papers she was assigned to grade in the meantime.

“You’re getting close to Tsukishima,” the girl stated.

“Mhm,” (F/n) nodded, “one could dare say that we’re even friends,”

“But, isn’t he a little scary to you?” the girl asked.

(F/n) tilted her head, “what do you mean?”

“Well, you know he’s known for being very blunt and mean to people,” the girl stated explaining, “he would often tease people for not being good enough and I also heard he’s made some students cry,”

(F/n) scrunched her face. The boy that the girl was describing did not sound like the Tsukishima she knew. Though she’s seen the way Tsukishima can be, it wasn’t nearly as bad as the descriptions the girl in front of her was saying.

“Well,” (F/n) wanted to word what she was about to say currently, “did you witness him doing these things with your own eyes?”

The girl froze and turned a bit pale, “well, no,” she looked down, “b-but you could ask anyone in the class and they’d probably say the same thing,”

(F/n) frowned, “I see, while I know you’re a good person and you mean well, I don’t think I agree with what you’re saying,” (F/n) glanced at Tsukishima through the corner of her eye, “I might be one of the only people he’s really close to besides Yamaguchi and I can assure you that while he may be a little on the sarcastic side, he’s surely not as bad as you describe him as,”

Unbeknownst them, Tsukishima was listening to their entire conversation. He has his headphones on but nothing was playing and their conversation wasn’t exactly a quiet one. And he was actually surprised that (F/n) defended him. He knew the girl wasn’t completely off with her descriptions of him. But the fact that (F/n) still defended him despite them only becoming closer friends during a short amount of time.

It made him happy. And made him fall in love with her even more.

Even though Tsukishima and (F/n) did their best trying to keep their relationship on the down-low during school, rumors had spread nonetheless. And when confronted with these rumors, the two did their best in explaining it in a nonchalant way.

But that didn’t stop many people from going up to (F/n) and warning her about Tsukishima.

-

“So (F/n),” two girls went up to her in the hallway while she had come back from delivering some papers to the office for her father, “is it true that you and Tsukishima are dating?”

“Maybe,” (F/n) replied, wanting to have a bit of fun.

“Really?” one of the girls questioned, “Him?”

“Girl you could do so much better,” the other girl chimed in, “you know how mean he can be right?”

Now this irritated (F/n) for many reasons. And while she understood the concern people had for her, they were so quick to judge and to her they made her feel as if she was stupid or naive to be dating someone like Tsukishima.

(F/n) sighed and looked at the two girls, “look, while I appreciate your concern, I can assure you he’s not as bad the way you guys see him,”

The girls rolled their eyes, “if you say so girl, just don’t come crying to us or anyone else if he breaks your heart,”

With that, the two girls returned to their classrooms, leaving (F/n) alone with her thoughts. Her blood was boiling and she was ready to punch a wall but she decided that broken knuckles and a hard conversation with her parents were not what she wanted to deal with as of right now.

-

“Why does it look like you’re ready to burn down a whole village,” Sachihiro asked (F/n) as she got in his car.

“Because I do,” she replied, sitting herself down in the passenger seat and dropping her bag at the floor of the car.

“What happened?” he drove off once (F/n) put her seatbelt on.

“Ugh you won’t believe it,” (F/n) went on and ranted about the two girls and how everyone in general has been warning her about her boyfriend when they’ve only seen one side of him and assume that’s how he is and will be forever.

Sachihiro knew exactly how she felt as he too experienced something similar when he was in high school.

“It’s just so annoying because they’re assuming the worst for me when Tsukishima is not like that at all,” (F/n) finished her rant.

“There’s a lot of unpack here,” Sachihiro started his fatherly talk, “but, I completely understand how you’re feeling, because I went through something similar when I was your age,”

“Really?” (F/n) looked at him.

“Oh yes,” Sachihiro started remembering his high school days, “see, back in the day, I was dating our high school ‘bad boy,’” he chuckled, “and while he was very aggressive and mean to others, he was extremely sweet and loving to me,” he smiled, “and prior to dating and while dating, everyone kept telling me that I was going to regret the relationship and that he was going to hurt me and blah blah,” the car was waiting at a stoplight, “and it was annoying because they didn’t know him as I did, and it was the way that he was one of the best relationships I ever had and the person who you’d think would never hurt me ended up being the one who hurt me the most,”

“The irony,” (F/n) said.

“Yep, very ironic indeed,” Sachihiro chuckled, “and unfortunately there is not much you can do in a situation like that. As long as you and Tsukishimna know the truth between the two of you, that’s really all that matters,” Sachihiro explained, “you don’t need to feel like you need to prove to them that he’s not who he thinks he is. It’s like the saying, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink,”

“Yeah,” (F/n) understood what he meant, “it just sucks constantly hearing people degrade him,”

“It sure does,” Sachihiro ruffled his daughter’s hair, “but, I’m sure the more you two start showing your relationship and the more they see that he’s really nice to you, maybe they’ll change their mind,”

“I hope so,” (F/n) pouted and she fixed her hair. She felt a lot better about the situation after talking to Sachihiro about it.

And he was right. Until they see that Tsukishima treats (F/n) differently, it’ll be hard to change their mind. But that doesn’t mean she has to prove that he’s a nice person behind closed doors. As long as both Tsukishima and (F./n) are happy and they know each other's truths, who cares what other people think or say?

Now, even though Tsukishima wasn’t an insecure person, hearing (F/n) having to constantly defend him was starting to make him feel insecure.

And (F/n) started noticing that Tsukishima was being hesitant about certain things, to which she did her best to assure him that there was nothing to worry about and nothing will get in the way of their relationship.

-

“Hey Kei,” (F/n) brought him out of a trance, “you’ve been really quiet,”

“Hmm?” Tsukishima hadn’t noticed that he hadn’t said anything since he showed up at (F/n)’s house during the afternoon. He greeted her of course, but since then he's been silent while watching (F/n) go through one of her SD cards on her computer.

(F/n) sighed and turned her desk chair to face him as he lied on her bed, “alright, spill,”

Tsukishima raised his eyebrow, “spill what?”

“Don’t give me that,” she crossed her arms, “I know something’s been bothering you and I have an inclination of what that might be,”

“So why does it matter if I tell you what it is if you already know,” Tsukishima replied.

(F/n) blinked a couple of times before breathing in and she got up from the chair, “because, I want to hear it from you,” she went to her bed and sat near Tsukishima, “so, pretty boy, what’s been on your mind?”

Tsukishima blushed upon hearing the nickname and turned his head away, earning a chuckle from (F/n). He knew he can’t hide the truth from her and she’ll end up using other means to get him to say what she wanted to hear him say so he decided to just bite the bullet and come clean.

“I’ve been hearing you constantly having to defend me when people keep telling you about who I am,” Tsukishima started to explain, “and it never really bothered me at first, but the more I hear it, the more I start to doubt myself and if I’m treating you right-”

He was cut off as (F/n) kissed him lightly. Tsukishima froze for a second but returned the kiss, moving his hand and placing it on her face. The kiss lasted a couple of seconds before (F/n) pulled away and the two laid their foreheads together.

“I have no issue defending you, no matter how many times I have to do it,” (F/n) whispered.

Tsukishima smiled slightly and gave her a peck on her lips before leaning back on the bed. (F/n) joined him and the two cuddled for the rest of the afternoon. Even if what (F/n) said may seem simple and basic to others, what she said meant a lot to him, and rest assured he was no longer insecure about the way he was and knew that (F/n) would’ve called him out if he wasn’t treating her as well as she should be treated.

(F/n) and her cousin Shinsuke were sitting on the stage that was in the volleyball gym. They were waiting for the boys to finish their conditioning which consisted of sprints up a steep street and jogging around the school. Prior to being in the volleyball gym, the two of them heading to the photography room when they were stopped by the vice principal who gave them a proposal that he wanted to happen if the volleyball team made it to the deicing match of who will represent the Miyagi prefecture at nationals.

-

“Great job guys!” Daichi said as he and the team walked into the gym after changing from their outside shoes to their inside shoes.

“Hey guys,” Takeda-sensei greeted the team before having them turn their attention to (F/n) and Shinsuke.

“(F/n)? And a guy who we’ve never met before?” Hinata tilted his head, “what are you guys doing here?”

(F/n) chuckled at his reference to her cousin, “hey guys, this is my cousin Shinsuke, he’s from the photography club as well,”

“Shinsuke,” Yamaguchi recognized him, “you and (F/n) were hanging out in our class all day a couple of days ago,”

“That we were,” Shisuke said. Now, he’s not (F/n)’s blood cousin. He’s from Sachihiro’s side of the family but recently transferred schools since he and (F/n) used to attend the same school before she moved this year.

“Eh? You have a slight accent when you speak Japanese,” Noya pointed out, “are you also somewhat foreign like (F/n)?”

“Wait (F/n)’s foreign?” Hinata asked, surprised at what Noya said.

“Simpletons,” Tsukishima rolled his eyes.

(F/n) smiled slightly at what her boyfriend said, “well, technically I’m not foreign from this country but he is,”

Before the conversation got off track Takeda-sensei mentioned that (F/n) and Shinsuke had an announcement to make.

“Ahh right,” (F/n) said, “earlier we were stopped by the vice principal and he presented a proposal that he wanted us to further present to you,”

“As you guys continue to proceed in the Spring tournaments and hopefully get to the final deciding match, the VP asked us to be the school’s personal sports photographers for that specific match,”

The team got really excited.

“So, if you guys needed more motivation to beat any team you play against, here it is,” (F/n) and Shin got down from the stage, “we’ll be rooting for you guys as this is a great opportunity for us and the photography club in general,”

They started walking away, “yep, so don’t let us down,”

With that, the two of them left the team to their practice. Because of what they said, the team had practiced hard as not only did they want to win and go to nationals, but they also thought of the sick photos (F/n) and Shin would take of them as they played during that final match.

And of course, Tsukishima couldn’t help but think that if they do get to the final match, it’ll be the first time (F/n) has ever seen him play (he wasn’t comfortable letting her watch his other matches, to which she understood and never complained). And, he couldn’t help but also smirk that his girlfriend would be the team’s sports photographer as well.

‘She’s definitely way out of my league,’ he thought to himself, ‘but I’m really lucky that I was the one she fell in love with,’
