I sat on the couch watching TV with Jay while Ariel—yes, she was back—and Carter talked about some upcoming yearly ball that they were going to at his job. I think they were discussing their attire and the dates it was going to be on. I leaned my head on the edge of the couch as my eyes stayed glued to the TV screen. We were watching this movie called Man on Fire with Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning. It was actually a good movie and it was sad. Ariel and Carter came and sat on the couch adjacent to ours and also began watching the movie. I was working up the courage every day to try to get the nerve to tell Carter how I really felt but it was just so hard especially when he had a girlfriend and it seemed as if he had no interest in me whatsoever. Jay kept urging me to talk to him, but it wasn’t much coming from him when he wouldn’t even talk to Jenny.
I sighed and continued to watch the movie. Jay laid his head on my shoulder and I pushed him off. He glared at me and I laughed earning a suspicious look from Carter and Ariel. Jay, in return, laid his head on my lap and when I tried to knock him off he bit my thigh.
“Jay!” I said shocked.
“What?” he asked innocently.
“You jerk! Get off of me!”
“No, you’re comfy,” he said as he placed his head back on my lap.
I chuckled. “Whatever,” I said ignoring him and letting him have his way as I continued to watch the movie.
The movie ended about an hour later and Jay finally gave me my space.
“So Lizzie, you want to sleep with me tonight?” Jay asked out of the blue. I snapped my head in his direction.
“What?” I gasped.
“I’m kidding, totally kidding! Carter, do not kill me,” Jay stated laughing.
“Shut up Jay!” I said punching his arm. “You are so stupid.”
“I just wanted to see the reaction and all of your faces were priceless!”
I looked over at Carter and Ariel and they didn’t seem too amused. “Is anything going on between you and Lizzie,” Carter asked.
“You want the truth?” Jay said immediately as he tapped on my leg secretly signaling for me to play along. I chuckled.
“Duh,” Carter replied.
“You won’t be mad,” Jay asked seriously.
“Why would I be mad,” Carter asked. Dang, that one hurt; he doesn’t care if I slept with his best friend. That means a lot!
“I don’t know,” Jay said.
“Well no, I won’t be mad and I really don’t care,” Carter replied monotonously. What?
“No, we are not anything,” Jay replied.
“But have you done anything?”
“I thought you didn’t care.”
“I don’t.”
“So why are you worried about it?” Jay asked. What was he doing? Was he trying to get a response out of Carter, because it was only creating tension and making this situation awkward!
“Because . . . never mind, forget it.”
I stared at the wall looking at nothing in particular trying to avoid any glares that were shooting my way. I eventually turned and Carter was staring in my direction.
“Carter, we aren’t doing anything. You should know that!” I told him but he didn’t say anything. “He’s your best friend Carter, you sh—“
“Carter doesn’t care about what you do and who you do it with, it’s not like you have any morals in that department anyways,” Ariel butted in.
“Excuse me? You know nothing about me, so I need for you to stop talking shit, because honestly I am tired of your bullshit,” I snapped. She was just getting on my nerves. She always had something to say when no one was talking to her and I just couldn’t really take it anymore. She needed to chill.
“And I'm tired of you being here,” she retorted
“Well too bad because I’m—“
“Y'all stop,” Carter interrupted.
“No, this whore ov—“
Carter clamped his hand over her mouth. “Ariel, stop,” he pleaded. She continued to mumble into his hand.
“You are a bitch!” I told her. “I don’t even see why Carter is with you!”
“Lizzie!” He shouted. “Stop! You two are fucking egging each other on.”
I rolled my eyes, got up, went to my room and closed the door behind me as if I was a teenager and me and my mom had got into an argument over the guy I was dating. I could hear Carter and Ariel arguing and then I heard a knock on my door. Soon Jay walked in closing the door behind him.
“I would have never done that if I knew it would have progressed into that,” he said as he sat down on the bed next to me.
“It’s not your fault,” I said. “She just needs her ass whooped.”
He laughed. “Calm down girl.” He said and I laughed. “Well, I’m going to go before it gets even more heated.”
“Alright Jay, just leave me in the crossfire that you started.”
“What? You just said that it wasn’t my fault.”
I laughed. “I’m just kidding. I’ll see you later.”
“Alright, bye girl,” he said before exiting the room and closing the door behind him.
I sighed and rested on the bed as the sounds of Cater and Ariel’s yelling projected into my room. She was making me so mad. I felt it coming on, the vertigo, the stress and it was about to hit hard. I needed to get out of here before it got worse. Maybe if I went for a run it would go away. I slipped on some shoes and I passed by the two of them arguing and jetted out the door running down stairs. I jetted through the darkness and started up the pavement. The world seemed as if it was moving around me. It felt like my world would crash down beneath me any second now. I went to turn the corner when I felt my body being jerked back.
“Lizzie! Stop,” he demanded.
“No, I have to keep going,” I told him.
“Lizzie stop, your fine, calm down.” He wrapped his arms around me.
My body began to tremble uncontrollably and he just held onto me. What happen to his argument? Where was Ariel? “You’re okay,” he said tightening his arms around me and rubbing my hair as the want for drugs hit me sevenfold. I just wanted to break free of his grip and run until I got want I wanted. Until I got what I needed! I cried involuntarily into Carter’s chest. I couldn’t control my emotions. I couldn’t control my body. I was in the darkness and I felt like I would never get out.
Eventually my body recovered, soaked in sweat. My skin felt cold and my color had turned pale. I pulled back from Carter’s arms and he just stared at me.
“You okay?” he asked.
I nodded as I went to stand up. My legs wobbled and I think I would have fallen to the ground if Carter was not there to help me. He lifted me up and carried me in his arms all the way back to the apartment. Carter placed me on the couch and then went into his room for a minute.
“Ariel,” he called out, but no answer came in return. “Shit,” he muttered. He came back out of his room and then locked the front door. He strode towards me and got on the couch with me after grabbing a blanket. He pulled me in his arms and I rested the side of my face against his chest. He draped the cover over us and soon I was peacefully asleep in his arms.
I woke up the next morning still feeling tired. I could feel someone’s hands running through my hair. I adjusted my head to look up at whoever this person was. It was Carter. Duh, I should have known that.
“Hey,” he muttered groggily. “Are you okay?”
I nodded my head against his chest. “I’m sorry about last night” he blurted immediately apologizing. “Whatever you and Jay are doing is none of my business and I shouldn’t have overreacted.”
“Me and Jay aren’t doing anything. We are just friends! My friendship with him is no different than yours, it was just a joke,” I informed him.
“Should I be relieved to hear that, because I am.”
I chuckled lightly. “So did Ariel leave last night?” I asked him after a moment of silence.
“Yea, she’s probably mad as hell! She won’t answer my calls or text me back, but in that moment Lizzie, you needed me more. I mean, all we were doing was arguing which I hate and you were having a withdrawal. If the same thing were to happen again, I would still leave.”
I smiled. “Thanks and I’m sorry for causing such a havoc.”
“Don’t worry about it. You still seem kind of tired?" he observed
“Yea, I kind of am.”
“Well, get some more rest. I’ve got nothing to do. I know how you wish that you could stay in my arms forever.” He jokes as a smirk grew upon his face.He had no idea how true that statement was,
