Dad was the first one to break the silence while we ate dinner quietly. "So, how did you like school? Have you made any friends? He asked as he was taking seconds.

"Well, Ems and I have a few classes with a girl named Jessica. We did sigh her friends at lunch. And there's this boy, mike, who's very friendly. Every one seems pretty nice." With one outstanding exception.

"That must be mike newton. Nice kid—nice family. His dad owns the sporting goods store just outside of town. He makes a good living off of all the backpackers who come through here."

"Do you know the Cullen family?" I asked hesitantly.

"Dr. Cullens family? Sure. Dr. Cullens a great man." Dad told us.

"They...the kids...are a little different. They don't seem to fit in very well at school." Bella put in on I started drinking my water.

"Yeah, I mean, Edward Cullen, he keeps staring at me all throughout the day. I don't know wether to be flattered or concerned." I laughed a little. But what surprised me is dad surprised by looking angry.

"People in this town," he muttered. "Dr. Cullen I'd a brilliant surgeon who could probably work in any hospital in the world, makes ten times ghe salary he gets here," he continued getting louder. "We're lucky to have him —— lucky that his wife wanted to live in a small town. He's an asset to the community, and all of those kids are well behaved and polite. I had my doubts, when they first moved in, with all those adopted teenagers. I thought we might have some problems with them. But they're all very mature. I have had one speck of trouble from them." What dad said surprised me. He never talked that much really. Not to Bella and i anyways. We're not close with dad.

"They were nice to me. Alice, the pixie haired girl is in some of my classes she offered me to sit with them but i said no becuase I didn't want to make any of them uncomfortable." I told Bella and dad. Bella looked shocked because normally I would've told her, this time I didn't though.

"They're all very attractive." Bella added.

"You should see the doctor." Charlie said, laughing. "It's a good thing he's happily married. A lot of the nurses at ghe hospital have a hard time concentrating on their work with him around." I laughed at what dad had said. I mean sure carslile is attractive for a middle aged man.

After dinner was over Bella and I put our dishes in the sink. I got dads dishes and put them in there as well. I said good night, grabbed my homework and went up to my room. I fell asleep quickly, exhausted.

The rest of the week was uneventful. I got used to the routine of my classes. By Friday I was able to recognize, if not name, almost all the students at school. In gym, the kids in my team learned not to pass Bella the ball and making me step quickly in front of Bella if the ball was near her.

Edward Cullen did come back to school. Every day, I watched anxiously until the rest of the cullens entered the lunchroom without him.

Bella was getting worried about me. Constantly zoning out during different parts of the day. What she didn't know was that I was waiting for a certain someone to show their face back at school.

But all in all, I was feeling a lot comfortable than I had thought I would feel by this point. Sure I zone out but I'm comfortable. I'm not sure about Bella though.

"Wow," mike said. "It's snowing."

I looked at the little cotton fluffs that we're building up along the sidewalk and swirling erratically past my face. "Ew." Bella said. Right I forgot Bella hates the snow. Any cold weather really.

Mike looked surprised. "Don't you like snow?" He asked her. "Right I forgot to tell you. She hates snow, but I love it." I smiled at him.

she made a face, "No. That means it's too cold for rain. Besides I thought it was supposed to come down in flakes—you know, each one unique and all that. These just like the ends of Q-tips." Bella said all at once.

"Haven't you ever seen snow fall before?" Mike asked her in a shocked expression at what she had just answered with.

"Sure she has," I paused. "On TV." Mike laughed. And then a big, squishy ball of dripping snow smacked him in the back of the head.

Bella, Mike, and I turned around to see where it came from. I had my suspicion about Eric, he was walking away, his back towards us—in the wrong direction for his next class. Mike apparently had the same notion. He bent over and began scraping together a pile of snow.

"I'll see you at lunch, okay? Come on, cadence, we gotta get to class." Bella then grabbed me by the arm and dragged me off to class.

It was lunch already and I was zoned out again. Everyone was asking if I was okay. luckily, Bella had to make an excuse for them so that they would be too worried about me. i was grateful for bella in all honesty. if i had

"What's with Ems?" I could hear Jessica ask someone at the table. "Nothing." Bella answered. "She's just a little sick."

"Isn't she hungry?" Eric asked.

"She'll be okay." Is all Bella said and everyone went back to talking. Bella checked up on me now and then but I couldn't shake the feeling of Edward. I was drawn to him somehow.

I finally started talking some. Bella went and got me a soda saying I should drink something. Mike kept asking me if I was okay. I told him I was feeling under the weather. But I was wondering if I should play it up and escape to the nurses office for the next hour. I decided against it though.

I decided to permit myself one glance at the Cullen family's table. If he was glaring at me, I would skip biology. I kept my head down and glanced up under my lashes. None of them were looking this way. I lifted my head a little.

They were laughing. Edward, Jasper, emmet, all had their hair entirely saturated with melting snow. Alice and Rosalie were leaning away as emmet shook his drilling hair toward them. They were enjoying the snowy day, just like I was.

Only they looked like a scene from a movie than the rest of us. But, aside from the laughter and playfulness, there was something different, and I couldn't quite pinpoint what that difference was.

I examined Edward the most, carefully. His skin was mess pal, i decide, flushed from the snow, maybe the circles under his eyes less noticeable. But there was something more. I pondered, staring, trying to isolate the change.

"Emma, what are you staring at?" Jessica asked, her eyes following my stare. I dropped my head, letting my hair fall into my face. I was sure, though, in the instant our eyes met, that he didn't look harsh or unfriendly like he had the last time I'd seen him.

he looked merely curious again, unsatisfied in some way. bella intruded my thoughts by leaning down to my level, whispering in my ear, "Edward Cullen is staring you." bella giggled in my ear.

i sighed, only feeling a bit flustered, "he doesn't look angry, does he?" i couldn't help but ask. he always gave me this look as if he hated me or something. it made me feel uneasy and uncomfortable at times.

she looked confused by my question, "should he be mad at you?" she paused before i could answer, knowing that i'd overthink it, "and no. he doesn't look angry." she reassured me.

"i don't think he likes me," i confided. i still felt queasy. i put my head down on my own arm.

jessica sighed, "the cullens don't like anybody..well, they don't notice notice anybody enough to like them. but he's still staring at you." she cut in, making me even more flustered.

"stop looking at him," i hissed.

she snickered, but looked away. i raised my head enough to make sure that she did, contemplating violence if she resisted.

mike interrupted us then—he was planning an epic battle of the blizzard in the parking lot after school and wanted us to join. jessica agreed enthusiastically. the way she looked at mike left little doubt that she would be up for anything he suggested.

bella kept silent. of course i agreed. i loved the snow. yes, it may be cold but i love it either way.

after lunch bella, mike and i walked into biology. we sat down in our seats, everyone except for bella groaned. it was raining, which meant every trace of snow would be gone. poof. like it was never there.

class didn't start for a few minutes, and the room buzzed with conversation. i kept my eyes away from the door, doodling idly on the cover of my notebook.

i heard very clearly when the chair next to me moved, but my eyes stayed carefully focused on the pattern i was drawing. i knew in fact that it was edward.

i couldn't help but think at lunch how we made eye contact for a quick second.
