10. 9th grade blues

9th grade was more trouble than it was worth. For a moment I really did consider skipping this grade and going straight to Highschool. But seeing Midoriya stopped me. Katsuki still hasn't talked to me, it's been two years and I should really just start calling him Bakugo again.

Bakugo's temper has reached new heights. He outwardly insults Midoriya, but I always draw the line when he tries to use his quirk. I'd readily put myself in the line of fire multiple times now and it's only been two months of school.

I'd stand there and take the hit because I know I can and would never give Bakugo or Midoriya a reason why. I'd ignore any attempt they make to talk to me and walk away with a smoldering uniform. This led to Bakugo cornering me more often.

I was slammed into the wall harshly, I raised my head lazily and met eyes with ruby red ones. I could almost imagine the steam coming out his nose as he breathed heavily. I tilted my head when he still hadn't said anything.

He growled before slamming me back into the wall.

I made no sound of discomfort.

"Just Stop protecting that quirkless nerd!" He snarled.

I blew out a puff of air and it misted the air around me and met his eyes apathetically.

He stayed there a minute longer before storming off.

Nearing the end of the year our teacher spoke up. "Since you're all third years it's time for you to think seriously about your future. I'll pass out handouts for your future plans now, but...you're all...pretty much planning to go into the hero course, right?"

I frowned as all my classmates begin to use their quirks. If I used mine here, I'm sure more than half these people would lose their lunch.

"Yes yes you all have wonderful quirks! But using your powers at school is against the rules!"

"Sensei!" Bakugo spoke up from behind me. "Don't lump us all in the same group. I'm not gonna be stuck at the bottom with the rest of these rejects!" He had his feet on the desk like usual. His shoes pressing into my shoulder when he kicked me.

He created an outrage among his peers.

"You all should shut up like the extras you are!" He barked.

"Oh, if I remember correctly, you want to go to U.A high, right, Bakugo?"

I tuned out the chatter to a dull mumble. Bakugo is just going off on his greater than thou speech again. I was brought out of it when the teacher mentioned my name.

"Oh yeah, Midoriya and Daisuke wanted to go to U.A., too, right?"

The class sputtered and there was an uproar of laughter. I turned and balanced my head in my hand as I looked out the window.

I was slower to pack my bag and leave. I had a lot on my mind to think about. Should I still be a hero? If I don't become a hero would that make me unfaithful to a dream made by a 8 year old. Would Beetlejuice be proud of me if I became a hero?

I turned at the sound of Midoriya mumbling. He was scrolling through his phone like he does everyday after class. He was about to pack up his hero notebook when it was snapped out of his hands by Bakugo.

"We're not done talking yet, Deku." He said while shaking the notebook in the air.

"Katsuki, what's that?" On of his lackeys said while approaching Midoriya's desk. "Huh? Hero Analysis for the Future?" They began to laugh.

Katsuki used his explosions on the book and threw it out the open window.

"Most top first-string heroes have stories about them from their school days. I want the shine of being able to be called the only student to make it into U.A. from this mediocre city junior high school. I mean, I'm a perfectionist" he put his hand on Midoriya's shoulder and I saw black smoke rising up. "So anyway...don't apply to U.A. Nerd."

The three of them began to walk away and one of the lackeys called over his shoulder "Come on, you could at least say something back." They walked to the door and at the last second Bakugo turned around.

"If you wanna be a hero that badly, there's a quick way to do it. Believe that you'll be born with a quirk in your next life and take a last chance swan dive off the roof!"

I pushed my chair back and it gave a screech. I shifted my shoulder bag to my arm and walked to the door with silent steps until I was beside Bakugo. In a sudden movement I slammed my arm into his gut. He fell ungracefully to his knees and looked up at me in confusion.

I glared down at him with misty eyes. "How dare you." I said under my breath. I turned my head and walked out the door.

I paused by the fish pond and saw the little koi sucking at the burnt pages of Midoriya's notebook. I fished it out easily and laid it on the edge, out of the water.

I left the school and didn't look back to see Bakugo staring after me.

I walked with my head down just wandering.

How dare Bakugo say that. He made me promise I would tell him if I ever... and I broke that promise. But he wouldn't know that after he abandoned me. There's a lot he doesn't know anymore. There's a lot I don't know either.

I turned into an alley and put my head on the wall. "Beetlejuice...Beetlejuice..."

"Miss are you okay?" A hand was placed on my shoulder.

I turned around and was now facing a man of average height. He was wearing a tan Trenchcoat and hat. "I'm detective Naomasa Tsukauchi, are you okay?"

"Yes, sir. I'm just tired from school!" I responded in faux cheerfulness.

"Ah I'm sure it can't be helped. Would you like to walk with me for awhile? I know a good candy store just up the block."

I perked up. "Do they have gummy snakes?"

"It's likely."

We went and bought candy before walking to a park. "I lied earlier...I'm sorry. It's not polite to lie to adults." I said looking down at my gummy snakes in shame.

"I know."

I looked up at him surprised.

"My quirk helps me know when someone is telling the truth or lying." He said.

I looked down again couldn't lie, so. "My quirk is immortality. I wasn't lying when I said I am very tired. One of my classmates, who was once a close friend, said something really horrible today so I hit him. He told another classmate that if he wanted a quirk so badly he should swan dive off the roof." I played with a gummy snake. "I found the statement offensive because I have tried. And failed." I blinked up at the detective. "I didn't jump off a roof mind you! But I did drown myself once." I shook my head.

"Do you have thoughts of hurting yourself often?"

"Not anymore, I'm apathetic really. Why bother killing myself if I just keep coming back. Im actually training to be a hero. A really good friend told me that with a quirk like mine it's not like I could die trying. Gummy snakes are his favorite, and I really miss him."

"Is he dead?" The detective asked placing his hand on my shoulder.

"Oh no sir, he's...complicated. I summoned him when I was five. And we had been friends since but nearly two and a half years ago. I had to banish him before he killed somebody that hurt me." I giggled. "He was so overprotective all the time. He was like this possessive snake. He and I would read every night."

"You sound like you like him?" The detective teased.

My eyes widened and my face grew flushed. "He's a very dear friend and I miss him a lot. That's all." I threw one of the gummy snakes at the detective.

"Do you feel better now?"

I thought for a second before responding. "I do, I don't feel so angry or sad. Thank you."

"Here, if you have another problem or when you become a hero you need some police help. Call the number on my card." He handed me a card and stood up to leave.

"Wait um. Detective Tsukauchi, if you need help either. With something that requires someone without self preservation you can get in touch with me through my father, Gang Orca."

The detective looked puzzled. "But Gang Orca doesn't have any kids?"

"Well if he keeps making goo-goo eyes at mother I'm sure he will be my father soon enough." I titled my head and smiled. Distantly I heard explosions. "Bakugo!" I jumped up from the park bench and waved hurriedly over my shoulder. "Bye detective I gotta go find someone."

His phone rang and he began to run too. But I got to the scene first.

Explosions were going off louder now and when I turned the corner I saw a crowd surrounding a slime like villain that was absorbing a blonde haired boy.

"Katsuki!" I shouted before running through the crowd and slipping under the policeman's arms.

I charged the slime and analyzed every possible thing I could do. At the last second I jumped and kicked him in the eyes. It's body fluctuated and stretched downwards following my kick. I landed and began trying to pull Bakugo out.

Calling him Katsuki like that, like we were friends again. How childish...

A flash of green hair approached my right and began helping me pull Bakugo out. From the corner of my eye I thought it was Beetlejuice...but it's just Midoriya again.

The slime reared up about to hit us and I instinctively moved infront of Midoriya to take the hit.

I was thrown across the street and landed in some rubble. A piece of rebar was going through my shoulder and I sneered at the offensive thing and pulled myself off of it.

All might was on scene now. He can deal with things. I hid myself behind a pillar and let the wind ruffle my hair.

When the mess was over pro heroes Kamui woods and Death arms, were scolding Midoriya. I got up and made sure my shoulder bag was hiding the wound on my arm. As I was passing by I pulled Midoriya up by the back of his uniform into a standing position. I bowed to the two heroes and smiled up at them. "Thank you for keeping Japan safe, he really must be going now." I lightly pulled midoryia away from them before death arms put his hand on my shoulder, the same one Bakugo blew up. I tensed and turned around. "I'm sorry. Normally I'd be a lovely and polite child but I do not have the time of patience to listen to your lecture." I turned around again and continued walking.
