McKennas POV
I paced the room after getting off the phone to Kate.
"Who was that?"
"It was kate....she asked me to fly out to Baja in 2 days to record some song for the film"
"No fair all of my best friends are gonna be together while I'm stuck here by myself" tobey pouted as he slumped back into the couch
"You're more than welcome to go for me"
"Oh you still not talking to Leo?"
"Nope I'm not ready to hear about his reason for getting back with Kristen"
"There not together anymore" tobey casually said as he started flicking through a book. Well that was long lasted, I wonder why they broke up
"Well I release my new song tomorrow so don't want to be caught up in this drama"
"Or your simply scared because it's another song written about him"
"No....it's inspired by him, thank you very much" what? It's true
"Whatever, maybe you should just hear him out Kenna, what's the worse that could happen"
"I don't want to hear what he has to say period"
"Ok ok" he rolled his eyes playfully
"Do you think he's heard 'better' yet?"
"Every girl, man and his dog has heard it so I wouldn't be surprised" I nodded. I feel like it would've been known if he didn't listen to it, or maybe he has and that's why he's been trying to talk to me? I shrugged and walked off into my room
Two days flew past like there were no tomorrow. I landed in Baja, Mexico. It was a lot warmer here than it was back in New York, thankfully I packed the right clothes for my stay. I was only due to stay for 3 days max but Neale has approved for me to take the whole week off.
I was staying in the same hotel as Kate and I'd assume Leo too. I walked in and settled in before I'd have to leave to have dinner with James to talk about this so called song he wanted me to sing.
*knock knock*
I walked over to my door while humming a tune
"Kate!" I screamed and she jumped on me
"I can't believe you're here I'm so happy right now you have no idea"
"Yeah I can't believe I'm here too" I try to say with enthusiasm but all I could think of if I ran into Leo
"So how was the flight? How's tobey? Omg and I heard your new song today too!! I can't believe it you came out with a new song" I giggled at her excitement
"Hey calm down, you've got me for three whole days we'll do all the catching up within then"
"Ok, sorry I'm just so excited. I've been surrounded by guys for 3 months and i mean I love Leo but he's starting to get on my nerves all he does is play around and pull pranks on me"
"Hmm sounds right" I rolled my eyes at Leo's name
"I mean Frances and Kathy are so lovely but they're so much older than me it's hard to act my own age around them"
"Oh I totally get you it was the same situation when I filmed for Romeo and Juliet....at the mention of Leo-"
"His room is down the hall" Kate cut in answering my question before I could finish "are you going to talk to him?"
"Nope just wanted to know so I can make sure to steer clear from him" Kate nodded and followed me to the living room area
"Maybe you should talk to him you know straighten things out so he doesn't feel the need to bother you so much"
"And talk to him about what?"
"How you feel about him?"
"Oh he knows exactly how I feel about him, he's 22 now I don't have to tell him how I feel about him leading me on and dating his ex"
"He is a boy after all maybe he just needs to be told exactly how it is"
"No I'm sure he can figure it out" there was a pause for a while "besides I'm here to sing the song and to see you, forget about Leo" Kate nodded and laughed
"You going to that dinner tonight with James?"
"I sure am he wants to explain his vision of the song and how he wants to use it"
"Good! I got invited to come" I smiled
"I haven't seen James since I was little, he's good friends with dad and used to come around to dads sets...really weird that I'm meeting him again"
"Oh James is lovely but he's always so serious at work I wonder if he'll be different tonight"
We ended up chatting for hours until we had to leave. We were currently sitting at the restaurant with James eating all kinds of Mexican cuisine
"So McKenna I'm gutted you didn't accept the role, I was almost worried you wouldn't make it out here"
"I'm sorry James, I'm so happy to be able to do this for you...but I got to ask what happened to Celine Dion" I asked. Why was I replacing one of the legendary singers of our era. James wiped his mouth
"Well you see Celine is a very busy woman, she was worried she wasn't able to get the recording done in time so she suggested for someone else to sing it specifically for the film. It'll be her song but in the film it'll be someone else's voice"
"Righttt....well thankyou so much for the opportunity"
"Oh you shouldn't be thanking me" I looked up and raised an eyebrow, Kate just looked down at her plate
"Is that right?"
"Yes I mean I was all for the idea but...hold on you can thank the man himself" he stood up from his chair and smiled at a guy who walked through the restaurant door. He stood there with open arms
"Aaaah the man himself" he chanted. As the guy got closer I realised who was standing before me. His hair brushed through but his bangs hung over his forehead, he sported a polo shirt and jeans. I scanned over his face and looked at his bright blue eyes. It was Leo...
"I'm so sorry I'm late James"
"Don't worry about it I hope you don't mind but we've started eating without you"
"Doesn't worry me at all" he said as he glanced at Kate then at me. We held eye contact for so long but he then broke it off by taking a seat. I leaned over to Kate
"Thanks for letting me know Kate"
"I swear I didn't know he was invited too" she mumbled. If it wasn't for James I would've up and left the table by now. Luckily for Leo, I wasn't going to make such an impression
"I was just telling Kenna here about Celine Dion. She thanked me but I think it's owed to someone else" I watched everyone look at me. I was nervous
"Thanks Leo" I softly said Leo gave me a soft look and nodded slowly
"Anything for you..." curse this boy honestly.
The remainder of the dinner I just sunk back and listened to the others talk about the film. I would steal glances at Leo every so often wondering what it'd be like if he didn't ignore me those times and got back with Kristen. Would things be totally different? I felt myself scanning to his hands that rested on the table. He had rings big rings scattered on his fingers but one of them stood out the most. The black and silver ring I gave him when he gifted the souvenirs from Romeo and Juliet. I found myself picking up my hand and fiddling with the cross pendant around my neck. I still wore the stupid necklace but it felt so bare when I didn't. James cleared his throat which snapped me out of thoughts and my trance from Leo. He was already looking over at me, noticing I was wearing the necklace he gave me
"So Kenna, how's your music going? I see you've released 2 songs now" I forced a smile and turned my attention to James
"Yeah I have, it's going really well actually. Wait have you heard the songs?"
"I sure have, my daughter keeps playing it on repeat. You have a lovely voice but I ought to ban you from making music if all I'm going to hear is your songs on repeat" he laughed
"Kenna has a beautiful voice, I think she'll be able to capture exactly what you want for the song" Kate said with a proud smile
"Can I ask what the song is called?" James nodded
"It's called my heart will go on, I'll send you the lyrics later tonight"
"It sounds like a love song" I giggled
"Yeah pretty much, it's just to add a little more sense of feeling in the rose and jack scenes" I nodded and looked over at Leo again who seemed so lost in his trance.
When it was finally time to go, James got the bill sent to our table
"I've just got to use the bathroom real quick if you'll please excuse me, Leo do you mind checking over the bill for me" Leo nodded and grabbed the bill as Kate and I mumbled to each
"Why the fuck would you not tell me he would have been invited"
"I'm so sorry Kenna but I didn't know"
"I could've at least prepared myself" I say but immediately looked at Leo as he butt into our conversation
"Ummm Kenna"
"What? What is it?" I spat. Leo's attention focused to James making his way back to the table. We all went quiet. All of a sudden I see the bill placed in front of me. I looked up at Leo
"Can you just double check they got your meal correct on there" I nodded to make it like there was no tension between us in front of James. I opened up the black leather folder and scanned over the bill, at the bottom I see a handwritten note
'We need to talk' I glanced at Leo who's licking his lips anxiously waiting for my answer. I shut the bill and handed it back to him
"Sure-I mean yes everything looks right" I nodded as I avoided eye contact with Leo.
I mean I should just get this over and done with. I can't be writing all my feelings on him through my songs, I guess I should tell him. This doesn't mean anything though he did go straight back to his ex after telling me he was falling for me. I'm not falling for his tricks and I refuse to get hurt by him again.
