Yesterday, a young man about to be married asked me how long I'd been married. I told him and he asked me what the secret to marriage was, that if I was still with and in love with my college sweetheart after all these years I had to know something.

I told him that every marriage is different. And that no amount of advice anyone can give you will ever be enough to prepare you for the curve balls life and marriage throw at you, but...

Make up sex is the best sex you'll ever have.

"Oh my god Derek, look!" she shrieked as she ran into the room.

"Look at what, what am I looking at?"

"Four months pregnant, and these pants still fit like brand new!"

She giggled and danced around in her jeans as I slid the scissors I had behind my back into the drawer along with the tags that were originally on the jeans. I was thankful that one of the first things I'd learned as a surgeon was to sew...never did I think it'd be sewing a fraudulent tag onto a pair of jeans...but it made her happy.

"That's amazing." I grinned "See, you haven't changed a bit."

"Well, a little bit." She pouted as she rubbed her hand over the slightly swollen belly.

"You're beautiful." I smiled with a kiss.

She gave me a glowing grin in return.

Marriage is just a piece of paper, it's what you make of it that matters.

"I know it's two in the morning." I whispered harshly into the phone "I realize your kitchen is closed already but you don't understand..." I sighed "Look I will do anything, anything at all, I'll even come down there and help you prepare it myself just so long as I get my very pregnant wife her all meat, double cheese, stuff crust pizza with extra cheesy breadsticks."

I grumbled into the phone "I will pay you $200." I smiled "Ok $250 it is, see you in half an hour."

Apparently money talks, because 35 minutes later a pizza delivery guy was on our doorstep where I happily counted out all 250 dollars to him. I didn't even cringe, just as long as it made her happy. I carried the pizza upstairs along with the breadsticks, her eyes opened as the smell wafted through the room and she sat up with a look of hunger.

"It's about time." She moaned into her first bite, I had to admit I licked my lips a little as my eyes dropped to her full, voluptuous breasts that suddenly developed over night a few days ago.

"Sorry, they had to re-start the ovens."

She ate two pieces of pizza in three bites, I don't think linebackers ate that much food that fast. She bit into her third piece and looked at me.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Yes, anything."

"Did you really just pay two hundred and fifty dollars for this pizza."

I gulped, "Maybe."

"You would do that for me?"

"You are the love of my life, my everything. And you're feeding and growing my child...There isn't a place in this world I won't go to get you what your heart desires."

Her eyes sparkled as she smiled at me. "What about outer space, would you go there for me too?"

I chuckled "You want a Milky Way again don't you?"

"Dipped in a bowl of triple fudge ice cream with marshmallow cream topping and drizzled with chocolate syrup please."

I tried to swallow down the bile rising in my throat but leaned forward and kissed her greasy pizza lips.

"Right away my love."

"Oh my god, Derek!"

I tightened my tie and turned in the bathroom to look at her staring in horror at her reflection in the mirror.

"What is it?"

"Look at the size of my ass!"

I tried not to stare too long and hard at the swelling in her rear end, I had to admit that I wasn't going to complain. As much as I loved her pre-pregnancy body, I was loving the new curves and a little more padding in her backside wasn't going to hurt...at least not hurt me.

"What about it?"

"It's huge!" she whined "Oh my god, I'm getting fat!!!"

I rolled my eyes and went over to her, I rubbed my hand down the back of her dress and smiled. "You are not getting fat. Your belly is getting bigger because the baby is growing and it's weighing you off balance so you have to arch your back a little more to hold yourself up, in turn your ass has to stick out a little more. So no, you're not getting fat, your body is just accommodating to more baby weight."

"Really?" she whispered, her lips trembled, and she was on the verge of tears.

"Yes really." I smiled "You are completely, all baby. There is no fat gene in your body."

"But what about.."

"But ,nothing." I hushed her with a kiss "Would I lie to you?"

She rolled her eyes and giggled, I placed my hands on her belly and looked at her in the mirror.

"You're ravishing."

She growled and grunted as sweat dripped down her face, I dabbed it with a damp cloth as I sat by her side.

"I hate you!"

"You love me." I soothed "And I love you...more than you could ever know."

"Why the hell does anyone want to have sex anyhow?"

"Because it feels good, and it makes babies. You want babies remember?"

"I remember." She growled "I just can't remember why doing it drug-free was such a good fucking idea!"

"If you want an epidural just say so."

"No!" she snapped "You're not supposed to say that damn it! You're supposed to tell me to say no to the drugs no matter how much I beg!"

"Meredith." I tried not to laugh as I took her hand, she squeezed it "I appreciate what you're doing, and I love that you want what's best for our baby. But I can't tell you to keep yourself in pain when you don't want to. If you want the drugs, they're there. If not..ok."

"It's too late." The doctor said. We both looked at her at the foot of the bed "You're ten centimeters and borderline crowning. By the time the anesthesiologist looks at his pager your baby will be here...are you ready for this?"

"Oh god." Meredith gasped.

We got into position, I held her hand and her legs up as she started to bear down, screaming every cuss word in the book at me... five pushes and 25 minutes later my eyes burned with pride as she pushed our son into this world screaming.

Oliver Derek Shepherd was 9 pounds 5 ounces and healthy in every way shape and form. They placed him on his mommy's chest immediately and she wept tears of joy as she kissed the top of his wet head.

"Oh god," she cried "he's so beautiful! Oh look at him Derek!"

"He is gorgeous." I mumbled as I kissed the top of her head "And so are you."

"Oh I love him so much." She sniffled "Let's have a million more like him."

I made sure she didn't see me roll my eyes, or laugh to myself. We were both too busy staring at our own little miracle of life in the eyes.

No matter how many times you witness a miracle of life in the medical field, it never compares to the one you see when your children are born.

March 25, 2017

"I'll love you forever; I'll like you for always, as long as you're living my baby you'll be."

I closed the book and looked down into my lap at my sleeping infant.

"Looks like it's bed time for you Mr. Patrick." I kissed his head of dark curls and lifted him in my arms to take him to his crib.

I tucked him in before leaving the room, I passed Maggie's room and looked in on her, then went across the room to see Oliver still silent under his covers. I looked at the three, once empty bedrooms now full of love and life. I stared around at the house from floor to ceiling beams and remembered a time when this dream was something I thought long gone.

I walked back to my bedroom where my beautiful wife was sitting in bed reading something. I vaguely recognized the leather black book as I climbed on top of the bed, nuzzling myself next to her.

"What are you reading?"

"Your old journal." She replied "the one you wrote when we were dating."

"Oh yeah." I frowned "God I haven't seen that thing in forever, when did you find it?"

"It found me." She giggled "It hit me on top of the head...years ago, the day I moved my stuff out. When you caught me in here wearing my wedding dress."

"Oh right." I chuckled "I still remember you thrashing around in here trying to get it off before I found you."

"Obviously it didn't work."

"So you've kept it all this time?"

"Yes." She smiled softly "Reading it was how you remind me how much you love me. What made you love me in the first place...which reminds me in turn how much I love and can't live without you."

"Mmm." I hummed as I kissed her neck, I grabbed the journal and tossed it over my shoulder "I can remind you in other ways too."

She giggled before I pulled her underneath me and smothered her with my love.

And sometimes...a divorce can save a marriage.

He looked at me completely baffled. He told me that he had no idea what I was talking about and none of that would apply to him and his wife to-be. I laughed and I told him that all he needed to know was this...

If you love her, make sure she never forgets it. And if she does...remind her.

The end
