Chapter 17: Birthday Night

I stared at the beautiful brunette standing behind the counter in Weasley Wizard Wheeze’s joke shop, her curly locks falling perfectly around her face, framing it with such delicate movements. Her crystal blue eyes embedded on the face in front of her, a customer, probably a student from Hogwarts, who know, her smile entrancing, everything about her was welcoming and beautiful. I smiled as I looked at her, I loved to watch her, if I weren’t so selfish I would be just satisfied watching her, but I wasn’t.

I frowned at the thought of going to America. I, honestly, didn’t want to leave, I didn’t want to leave my family, my twin brother, the shop, Clary…. Or Marley. But it felt as if I had no choice, Marley seemed like she would not remember, whatever happened to her that time in the forest, really affecting her and was blocking me from her memory. Or maybe she was blocking them herself; maybe she didn’t want to remember me. I shook the thought from my mind; it was never good to think like that.

I tried to place a smile back on my face; I couldn’t have people thinking I was upset about this. Mum, George, Caitlin and everyone else were already upset with me over this decision, but what they don’t understand is I have no choice. If I go, maybe then… over time I will be able to forget Marley, like she has me. It was torture, seeing her everyday without kissing her, or telling her I loved her. It was pure torture. But soon that would all be over, I would be leaving to New York soon, and I would be able to get all these….longing feelings away from me once and for all. I figured the farther I went, the easier it would be to forget about Marley, but that doesn’t mean I am giving up just yet. If she tells me she doesn’t want me to leave before I go, I will not leave her, but so far it does not seem like that would be happening soon. It has already been three weeks since I told her, and she still says I should do what I want to do…. She was not affected by it whatsoever.

I sighed, this would probably be easier if George or even that Caitlin were here, at least they’d give me some positive input, but they were still on their honeymoon. They were actually coming back tomorrow, if I recall, they even mentioned they had a surprise. I sighed again, as I looked at Marley and felt a smile make its way on my face, if I remember correctly she was twenty today. I smirked, time to go embarrass Marley.

“Hello everyone!” I called out from the stairs and immediately everyone turned their attention towards me, even Marley looked at me curiously as I winked at her. “How is everyone doing today?”

Most people in the joke shop looked at me curiously but some replied with a “fine” or an “okay” or even a “terrible”. But either way they looked at me questioning. “Well, that’s amazing! Now I have an announcement to make, as you all know today is June thirty-first, and it is a very special day today.” I said with a smirk as I glanced over at Marley to see her glaring at me, she knew what I was going to say, and her face showed me what she would say when I said what I was going to say. She was going to be upset. “Today is Marley’s birthday!” I announced pointing a finger at Marley, who immediately turned beet red as everyone’s attention turned towards Marley, “She is twenty today! Let’s all sing happy birthday to her!” I yelled as everyone smiled, laughed and then I started to break out in song. “Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you.” I said as everyone starting to sing with me.

I looked down directly at Marley to see she was blushing like crazy, and her face showed sheer embarrassment and shock at what everybody was doing. We all looked at Marley as we chanted the birthday song, “Happy Birthday to you!” Everyone yelled smiling at Marley, who continued to blush but smiled at everyone else. Once the song was over everyone was either laughing at what they just did or went over to congratulate Marley on her twentieth birthday, I grinned as I started to make my way over to her. I noticed two guys, who were probably around my age, standing in front of Marley, wishing her a happy Birthday. But they were standing awfully close, and I noticed the awkwardness in her eyes at the situation she was in. They were probably flirting with her, I couldn’t exactly blame them, Marley was a beautiful girl, but something in me boiled as I looked at the guys. I was really jealous when it came to other boys and Marley, bloody hell when I saw her kiss Matt at the wedding party I think I was going to kill Matt if it weren’t for Marley being there.

I made my way over to the flustered girl, ignoring other girls who tried to fling themselves on me, or try to flirt with me. They really weren’t worth my time. Once I was behind the counter next to Marley I swung my arm over her shoulders, startling her for a split second, until she looked up and smiled at me. That smile could make any guy fall for her. I then turned my attention back at the two guys who were a bit bewildered as to why I was over there, interrupting their time with my girl. “Hello, can I help you two with something? Sorry, but if you’re asking Miss Riddle here about the products, she doesn’t know much about them.” I said looking at the two boys.

“Ah, no we were just asking her when she got off work.” The boy to the right said as I looked at him with a sly smirk.

“Oh well I hope you two weren’t planning anything with my girlfriend.” I said as they both looked at me like I had spurted out wings. Even Marley looked at me questioning as she blushed slightly.

“Fred what are you –“she said but I stopped her as I whispered in her ear.

“Play along unless you want to get stuck on a date with these two goons.” I whispered as she kept her mouth shut and then looked over at the two boys with a smile.

“Oh right! That’s right; Fred is taking me out to dinner tonight, sorry boys, maybe if I wasn’t taken.” She said with a smile, I couldn’t help the fact that my heart fluttered just bit when she used my name, it reminded me of the old times…

“Yes, so off you go.” I said shooing the boys with my hands as they scowled at me one last time before leaving with their purchases I smiled. Job well done Fred. I then felt something hit my shoulder as I stumbled backwards. “Ouch!” I said earning a few glances in my direction as I looked up to see Marley glaring at me with a sly smirk playing her face. “What was that for?” I asked with a frown.

“Hmm I don’t know, maybe for telling everyone in the store it was my birthday!” she exclaimed with a slight frown as she had a red tint on her face. I grinned.

“Oh you know you loved it Miss Riddle.” I exclaimed as Marley rolled her eyes looking at me.

“You’re lucky you saved me from those two boys or else I would be angry.” She said turning back to the cash register as I grinned.

“Someone likes to be my pretend girlfriend.” I sing song at Marley as she turned around quickly, cheeks inflamed with embarrassment.

“I do not!” she exclaimed as my heart pained a little, but I ignored it.

“Aw, Miss Riddle are you really that disgusted by me?” I asked with mock hurt as I placed my hand on my chest, she blinked at me for a second and then blushed again.

“I never said that….” she whispered at me as I grinned.

“Oh then what do you think about me, Miss Riddle?” I asked turning on the girl as she looked up at me, blushing by the sudden closeness of our bodies. I only continued to smirk down at the blushing girl.

“You really want to know what I think about you Fred?” she asked with such softness in her voice that lured me in closer to her. She smirked at me, something I rarely see Marley do. “I think….” She whispered looking up at me with a smile as she stood up on her tip toes getting closer to my face. “I think…. YOU SHOULD GET BACK TO WORK!” I heard her yell as he smacked me upside the head. I blinked down at the girl, completely taken back by what she had done. She looked up at me with a smirk, before turning back around to face the startled and confused customer.

“Oh, you’re good.” I said with a grin, “But I will get back at you for that.” I whispered in her ear before leaving to go back to help a customer with a product. I glanced back to see Marley’s face completely red again, I smirked at a job well done.

“Yeah, have a nice day!” I recalled to the last person that exited the joke shop, and with a swish of my wand the placed said closed. I let out a sigh of pure relief, that day was exhausting. I looked over to see Marley counting the money in the cash register, I grinned at her. She was so efficient, much better than I was at that sort of things. “Miss Riddle!” I announced as I walked over to her to see her cock an eyebrow at me.

“Yes, Fred?” she asked curiously as I leaned across the counter, wanting to be as close as I could be to Marley. I smirked at the question I would ask her.

“I think I owe you a birthday date.” I said as Marley blinked at me a few times before a blush formed on her face.

“Y-You don’t have to…” she said quietly as I smiled.

“Well I want to Miss Riddle, and you can not say no, because I make the rules here.” I said firmly as she looked at me questioning. “Plus, this will probably be our last date since I’m leaving in a few days.” I stated as I looked down at her, something flashed across her face, but she was good at hiding what it was, because soon her face replaced with a smile.

“Fine.” She said as I looked at her, I thought I would have to use much more persuasion techniques than just that. “I’ll go on the date with you, but Clary has to come along.”

I grinned, “I’d love that. My two favorite woman in one!” I announced as she rolled her eyes at me. I then turned to see Clary had made her way downstairs with a grin as she looked at Marley and me.

“Hi daddy, hi mommy! How was work?” she asked looking at us with a grin as I smiled and ran at the little girl as I lifted her in the air.

“It was absolutely amazing! I embarrassed your mommy Clary.” I said with a grin as Clary smiled.

“Weally?” she asked as I nodded and she grinned. “Good job daddy!” she yelled giving me a high five as I smiled. I then looked over at Marley who shook her head.

“I can’t believe you two…” she sighed as we both grinned.

“Oh and guess what Clary!” I yelled looking at the little girl who looked at me curiously. “You, I and mommy are going on a date!”

“Weally a date!?” she exclaimed as I nodded. “I’ve never been on a date before!” she exclaimed as I grinned.

“And this will be the first and the last one you will be on. Never go on a date with boys.” I said as Clary made a disgruntled look.

“Ew, boys are yucky! Except for daddy, Georgie, and Maxey!” she announced cheerfully as I laughed.

“You keep thinking that way.” I said as Clary smiled.

“Well Fred, Clary and I are going to head out.” Marley said from behind me as I frowned.

“Aw, leaving already?” I asked as she rolled her eyes.

“I’ll see you later, but I need to change.” She said as I smirked.

“Oh, would you liked to get dolled up for our date?” I asked as she blushed.

“No!” she exclaimed as I smiled.

“Good, because you’re already beautiful.” I said as she blushed even more.

“Thanks…” she said averting her gaze from mine. I smiled as I set Clary down on the ground.

“Alright, well I’ll meet you two back here then around six?” I asked looking at my watch to see it was four. Marley nodded with a smile.

“Course.” She said as Clary nodded.

“We’ll be back!” she announced cheerfully as I smirked as I leaned down to Marley to see her face heat up.

“Oh and Happy Birthday Miss Riddle.” I said as I looked back up to see her eyes staring at me, as if I had done something horribly wrong, for a second I thought I had. She then lightly shook her head as if getting rid of a though and blushed as she looked up at me.

“Thanks…” she said dreamily. “Right, well let’s go Clary.” She said looking down at her daughter as she held her hand out for her daughter to grab. Once she grabbed her hand, they both left out the door, Clary giving me one last wave as I watched them leave for a few moments, before darting upstairs.

I really had to find something to wear.

I grinned as I made my way down the stairs wearing some jeans, converse and a short maroon shirt. I looked to see Marley and Clary standing in the joke shop looking around the products absentmindedly. I smiled, even when it looked like Marley wasn’t trying she looked nice, she was wearing some nice ripped jeans, with a blue stripped crop top, underneath that it looked like to be a white tank top and some brown boots along with her usual black beanie. I then looked at the little blonde. She was wearing some dark jean caprice, with a yellow tank top; on top was a jean jacket as well as her small white converse. I even noticed that she had a nice pink barrette in her hair. I smiled at the two beautiful ladies standing in the joke shop. “Well don’t you two look wonderful.” I said with a grin as they both turned and looked at me. Marley smiled while Clary ran towards me, jumping into my arms.

“Daddy!” she exclaimed hugging me as I smiled, I loved it when she called me that. “Where are we going?” she asked as I grinned.

“To get…. Some ice cream!” I announced as Clary’s face beamed.

“Weally?!” she exclaimed as I nodded my head.

“But what about dinner?” Marley asked out of the blue as I turned towards her and smiled.

“We’ll be having that later.” I said as Marley cocked an eyebrow at me.

“We’re having ice cream before dinner?” she questioned as I nodded my head, she sighed shaking her head. “You are spoiling my daughter too much, Mr. Fred Weasley.” She said as I grinned.

“It’s my pleasure to spoil her!” I announced as Clary grinned.

“Yay for spoiling!” she exclaimed as I grinned, and set her down as I looked at Marley.

“Well ready to go Miss Riddle?” I asked as she sighed, but reluctantly followed Clary and I out the door. I made sure to lock the place before we started to walk down Diagon Alley, I then felt something grab my hand as I looked down to see Clary’s small hand holding onto mine. I smiled down at the girl, and then realized she was holding Marley’s as well.

I smiled to myself; we looked like a small family walking down Diagon Alley, hand in hand.

Marley and I lifted Clary up in the air a few times before we reached our destination at Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor. I smiled as I remembered the small little date Marley and I had a month or so ago when we came here. We walked in the parlor, and Clary was immediately fascinated with the way the store owner decorated it, it was decorated with tons of colors, and a lot of happy smiles looking down at you. It was basically decorated for every single kid to enjoy looking at.

Once we ordered some ice cream, Marley getting the chocolate raspberry like last time, Clary getting some cookies and cream, while I got my favorite, mint chocolate, we started to walk down Diagon Alley. Mostly walking by all the stores you would have to go to if you were attending Hogwarts for school supplies, Clary was fascinated with all the shops, and wanted nothing more but to buy anything, and everything in the shops. She’s never seen so much magical places; just wait till she goes to Hogwarts! While Clary looked around in amazement I looked over at Marley, to see her staring at me, she quickly averted her gaze from mine. “So Miss Riddle, care for a lick?” I asked as I saw her face turn red.

“What?!” she asked alarmingly as I laughed at her alarmed face.

“I meant, would you like a lick of my ice cream? Since you never got a chance to have some last time.” I replied as Marley seemed to realize what I was getting at and blushed somewhat more from embarrassment.

“Oh right… uh yeah that would be nice… you wouldn’t mind?” she asked as I smiled.

“Not as long as I get a taste of yours.” I chirped as she smiled and nodded. She then lifted her ice cream up to me as I smiled and licked at the frozen treat. The treat was what I would say delicious, they were always delicious, but having Marley there with me made it a bit better. I grinned at the cheesiness I had just said in my head. Marley looked up at me.

“Well, do you like it?”

“Of course!” I exclaimed with a grin, “Though I think I liked it a little bit more last time when I took it off your face.” I replied as Marley flushed.

“Let me try yours!” She replied quickly as I smiled and placed my ice cream treat in front of her, she placed her hand on top of mine as she guided the frozen treat to her lips. She tasted the treat as I couldn’t help but remember all the time she use to kiss me with those lips, and all the snogging times we shared. I quickly snapped back to reality to look down to see Marley smiling.

“Well…? Does it meet your standards?” I asked as she grinned.

“It exceeds them with flying colors!” she announced happily as I smiled, she let go of my hand, and looked around for Clary. Clary was over by the broom shop when we started walking to her, she had completely finished her ice cream, though she did have ice cream all over her face. Marley, being a mother, instantly went over to her with a napkin as she began wiping her face clear of the frozen treat, Clary struggled just for a bit under her mother’s grip, but then let her clean her up. I smiled at the two, Marley was an amazing mother, she loved Clary so much, and you could just see it in her eyes. And Clary loved her mother; there wasn’t a day that went by where you didn’t see those two together.

We continued to walk down Diagon Alley enjoying the nice leisurely stroll, especially Clary since she was the one in the middle, and Marley and I would always swing her up in the air. She loved that. It was starting to get a little dark, but not because of the time, but because of the clouds I noticed, was darkening. I sighed; it would probably rain, hopefully not too bad. We still had a ways to get to the joke shop.

Well that thought didn’t last too long, because a few minutes later I felt a rain drop fall on my face. I instantly looked up and BOOM rain was pouring out of the sky like no other. “Bloody hell!” I yelled looking up at the pouring sky; I looked over at the two girls to see them shocked by the appearance of rain. “Miss Riddle do you have some kind of curse with rain?” I asked with a smirk as Marley shot me a look as I smiled. I noticed everyone Apparating out of the rain, or running under a tarp, either way it sounded good. “Well looks like we’re heading back!” I yelled over a boom of thunder as both of the girls jumped in surprised, I quickly pulled them both in a hug and then felt the nausea feeling twist my stomach, as I soon felt the ground appear under my feet.

Though, somehow, Marley still managed to fall down on the ground with a thud, even when she was wrapped in my arms. I couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s not funny! Ugh, what is with me and gravity?!” she exclaimed looking at the ground with hate while Clary and I just laughed at her. I noticed that we all were soaked to the bones, even though we were only out in the pouring rain for just a few moments.

“Well come on klutz, time to go upstairs and prepare dinner!” I exclaimed as Clary jumped for joy.

“Yay dinner!”

“And if you want you two can wear some of my clothes.” I responded as Clary smiled, while Marley blushed. We made our way up the stairs still dripping water as we entered the slightly messy apartment, I couldn’t help but be sort of a slob especially when the responsible twin was gone. “Stay right here, I’ll go get you two some clothes.” I said to the two soaking wet girls as I walked into my room and grabbed two pairs of shirt and one pair of pajama pants. I decided that I would change to, I was pretty wet. I changed into a pair of sweats and a white shirt. I looked around the room, making sure nothing was out of place as I walked into the living room with the article of clothing. I handed them both what they would need. “Here you go, you two can change in my room or the bathroom if you want.” I said as Marley smiled.

“Thanks Fred, you really didn’t have to do this.” She said as I shrugged.

“Can’t have you two freezing to death in my house before dinner.” I replied as Clary beamed.

“Yay daddy clothes!” She exclaimed as she ran into the bathroom, Marley rolled her eyes at her rambunctious daughter as she followed her into the bathroom. I couldn’t help but smile that I had both Marley and Clary here.

I then turned towards the kitchen as I started to prepare dinner; at least I wasn’t like Marley. I could cook. Marley and Clary came out a few moments laughter, Clary wearing my black shirt that went all the way to her feet, the neck line was big on her too, but she was four, no one would care. Marley, I loved seeing her wearing my clothes, thought it did bring dirty thoughts to my mind, but what can I say? I’m a guy, and even the best of guys think badly at times, and I wasn’t even the best. She was wearing my maroon colored sweater with the letter F sewn on the front, as well as my black pajama bottoms. I admit, she looked better in them than I ever did. “I must say Miss Riddle, you look better in my clothing than I do.”

Marley flushed as she looked away. “Shut up.” She stated as I smiled at her innocence. Clary turned and looked at me.

“What are we eating for din din?” she asked as I grinned.

“Something really yummy, why don’t you and Miss Riddle watch some princess movies while I cook?” I asked as she grinned and ran over to the place where the small TV was set. We had kept a few of her things here since she’s always here when Marley’s working, Marley didn’t go rushing to her daughter though. She stood there looking at me for a moment, and once I caught her staring she flushed and turner her head away. “Miss Riddle?”

“Um, do you need any help?” she asked as I smiled.

“Nope, you go over there and watch that princess movie with Clary. I’ve got this covered, anyways, I wouldn’t want you to burn the dinner.” I said with a grin as Marley flushed and glared at me.

“I’m not that bad!” she complained as I smirked.

“Really?” I asked as she looked at me. “Then, would you like to cook this?” I asked stepping away from the stove as she looked inside the dish, unsure what it was and unsure what she would do.

“On second thought, maybe I am bad. You shouldn’t let me near food.” she replied hastily as I grinned.

“Too cute Miss Riddle.” I said as I ruffled her hair, she blushed.

“Tease.” She said and with that she walked back to her daughter. I stood there for a second watching her. She has never said that to me, the last time I heard it was when she still remembered me… I wonder…. Nah, I shook my head clear of the thoughts, I shouldn’t get my hopes up like that. I reminded myself as I went back to cooking.

We started heating dinner a couple of minutes later after that, we had lamp chops with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. We even had some birthday cake afterwards, of course Clary and I forced Marley to blow out her candles, and once she did I had ran back in my room and grabbed her small little birthday present I had gotten her. “Here you go, Miss Riddle.” I said handing her a small box. She looked up at me questionably.

“Fred… you didn’t have to get me anything.” She said looking at the box and then up at me. I grinned.

“Ah, but you only turn twenty once, plus it’s like a going away present for me as well.” I replied as I handed her the box, she smiled.

“Open it mommy!” Clary announced happily as she looked at her mom, Marley nodded as she ripped open the wrapping paper, and soon there was nothing left but a box. She hesitated a bit, but then opened the box and grinned. “What is it?” Clary asked poking her head around her mom and looking at the two bracelets in the box.

“You’re my person…?” Marley asked reading the wording on the silver bracelets. I grinned.

“Yup, it’s a best friend’s bracelet. At least I think it is, I wasn’t really sure, you muggles have weird jewelry. But they are suppose to be best friend bracelets.” I said looking down at Marley. “That way, you have one to wear and I have one to wear, see.” I said grabbed one of the bracelets and placing it around my left wrist. I then placed Marley’s bracelet around her right wrist.

Marley looked up at me with a smile, “Thank you Fred.” She said quietly as she pulled me into a hug I smiled.

“Well it was the least I could do. I wouldn’t want to give you nothing to remember me by for when I leave.” I said as I noticed Clary’s face fall slightly, but it soon changed to horror when we heard a loud thunder erupt, it even shook the apartment just a bit. Clary let out a yelp as Marley pulled away and comforted her daughter, I stood up and looked out the window, to see the rain coming down like crazy and there was lightning and thunder every five minutes. “Bloody hell, its really coming down, looks like I wouldn’t be able to walk you home, but Apparating will still work.” I said with a small smile.

“No!” Clary yelled as Marley looked at her scared daughter. “No I don’t want to go home, I’m scared!” Clary announced as she moved from Marley and went straight into my arms. “Please can we say here?” she asked whimpering in my chest. I looked from her to Marley who sighed.

“I suppose Clary doesn’t want to go home, not in this weather…. Fred do you think–“Before she could finish her question, I interrupted her.

“Of course!” I announced with a smile, I couldn’t help myself. Having Clary and Marley stay here would be wonderful. Marley gave me a small smile as another burst of thunder shook through the small apartment, causing Clary’s grip around me to tighten. “Why don’t we go watch a movie to get your mind off the storm, how bout that Clary?” I asked as Clary merely nodded her head in my chest. I smiled at the little girl as we all walked into the living room, Marley popped in the movie, The Little Mermaid. I sighed mentally, I had seen this movie so many times, and I think I could recite it word for word.

Ariel had come out of the water with a dazzling, shimmering silver dress as she started to run to Prince Eric with her, now, human legs. Her father was such a nice man for letting his daughter goes like that, bloody hell I would not be able to do that. I felt a few tears slide down my face at the touching scene, I hated The Little Mermaid, for some reason it always made me cry. Though I would never let George or Caitlin ever find out about this.

I looked over to see Marley giving me a questioning look, as to why I was crying while I looked at the little blonde headed girl asleep on her lap. I smiled at Clary, “If you want I can carry her to my room.” I whispered to Marley, who gave me a small smile and nodded. I then stood up as I quietly and swiftly swooped up Clary into my arms, I looked at Marley who seemed to be staring at me again, rather intensely. I ignored it and started to walk to my room with Clary in my arms. Once we were in my room I placed the small little girl on my bed, she stirred for a bit, but continued to sleep. I looked over at Marley. “You can sleep in here too.” I said as she nodded.

“Where are you going to sleep?” she asked as I smiled.

“The couch.”

“Why not George’s and Caitlin’s room?” she asked me as I smiled.

“They are suppose to be back sometime in the morning, so I’m expecting that they would not be happy if they found me sleeping in their bed. Plus, I don’t know what they do in their bed.” I said with a shutter as Marley laughed at my ways.

“Are you sure? I could sleep on the couch and you can sleep with Clary.” Marley said as I grinned.

“Or we all could sleep together.” I said with a smirk as Marley blushed and averted her gaze from me again, I laughed.

“I suppose… if you want to….” I heard her whisper quietly; it was so quiet I almost didn’t catch it. When I heard her, I though I misunderstood her at first, but she looked at me with her red face and I knew I didn’t misunderstand her. I smiled, oh how much I wanted to say I wanted to, because I did. I did, so very bad, but the good boy inside of told me no, it would not be right.

“No, Miss Riddle, it’s okay. I will be fine on the couch.” I said with a smile as she sighed. “But thanks for the offer, I’ll take you up on that another day.” I said with a wink as I saw her blush.

“Git.” She said quietly, her face still red. I grinned as I ruffled her head.

“Good night Miss Riddle,” I said as I turned towards the door to leave until I felt a hand around my wrist. I looked down to see Marley had grabbed my wrist; I cocked an eyebrow at her curiously.

“Um… I just wanted to say thanks, again, for this day. It was really fun.” She said quickly letting go of my wrist, “Good Night Fred.” She said as she smiled up at me, I grinned and then left her. If I stayed there any longer, who knows what I could have done… I sighed as I walked into the living room, grabbed an extra blanket and pillow from the closet and plopped myself down on the couch. Today had been a good day.

It almost felt like it should have been my birthday for spending that much time with those two.
