The Lady with the Lantern

By AdhishMazumder

There is rumour in this old town,
About a lady in jet black gown,
She moves as a shadow on each new moon night,
To that old lighthouse with its light shining so bright.

Some they say she is a ghost of past,
Every new moon night she is seen last,
None could say the origins of her,
None could know the pain by far.

I followed her one stormy night,
The Lady with the Lantern was a ghastly sight,
A hood obscured her face this moon less night,
The Lady with the Lantern, I mustered up my might.

She moved on with little fear,
To that shining lighthouse now so near,
She stopped to look at the turbulent sea with waves so high,
She moved on inside the lighthouse with a momentous sigh.

I followed her and followed her well,
Climbing to the top I saw her; the lady from the tale,
She was waiting for me it seemed for she addressed me looking in the eye,
"Why do you follow? Don't you dare lie!"

I followed her one stormy night,
The Lady with the Lantern was a ghastly sight,
A hood obscured her face this moon less night,
The Lady with the Lantern, I mustered up my might.

"What is your story my lady? Why this deed?"
"What on Earth does a lady on such a night in a lighthouse need?"
Her lips curved to give a smile as she started the story about her life,
The Lady with the Lantern, the moment has finally arrived.

Her husband went aboard on a fishing trip on such a night,
She had waited for years to get his sight,
Her life was that of a half widow half wife,
Her dark dress was fear and the lantern a hope that kept her alive.

That moment a breeze blew out the lanterns light,
And the Lady with the Lantern sublimed into the night,
Till date she haunts the lighthouse on such nights,
The Lady with the Lantern, the lady in darkness carrying a ray of light.
