ho hey- the lumineers
it had been a few days since the huge kerfuffle at the shirley-cuthbert-baynard household. ruby got back with her parents, jerry and ruby dealt with their feelings better, and most importantly two young adults both admitted to themselves how they felt.
although they both were never gonna tell eachother.
it was a chilly november day when anne walked towards the entrance of her school. she had 'scar tissue- by the red hot chili peppers' blaring in her headphones.
everyone at school had a tendency to stare at her whenever she entered a room. ever since anne arrived in avonlea, shed always been the girl you either loved or hated.
now that she is almost a little bit more than best friends with the new popular boy, people talk. people do more than talk, they stare aswell.
and there he was. sitting on a bench, with his headphones in, the same way anne was. he was tapping his foot to the song. gilbert's hair fell on his forehead, framing his face to perfection.
"ahem, dr blythe is needed!" joked anne. trying to get his attention.
"shirley!! oh man you scared me..."
gilbert checked out her outfit for a moment. she was wearing a velvet underground t-shirt, paired with a black leather skirt. she wore black combat boots and had her hair messy.
breaking the silence, anne spoke "do you want to walk to class with me...? we have english."
"i could never decline an invitation from shirley! let's go."
the whole class had taken their seats. ms stacey decided to start the lesson.
"today, class, we will be starting a new project. we will be doing poetry reading! before you complain, this is a partnered project."
anne and gilbert made eye contact.
"you and your partner will choose a piece that speaks to you guys. something you both share the love for. luckily for you, i have created the groups. anne and gilbert, you will be together."
anne smiled at gilbert. anne was a poetry freak, so he was aware of the rollercoaster he was getting himself in to.
"let's finish working on this after school." class had already finished. time flies by when spent with people you love.
he smiled at her. did anne really just invite gilbert to come over and work on a project together?
oh boy was he a fool.
"see ya then, shirley. but we still have the rest of school left."
"oh yeah, whoops. forget for a second. totally forgot that we were trapped in this shit hole." anne had sarcasm rooted in her voice.
"nice shirley. let's go to lunch together, shall we?"
"we shall."
they interlocked arms and continued their way to cafeteria. they were skipping down the halls with no care in the world. most of the students they weren't friends with were under the impression that the two friends were dating.
"it's the golden couple!!!! over here, love bugs!" called out josie, motioning for anne and gilbert to come sit with the group.
they immediately let go of eachother and sat down quickly, not wanting anyone to see the blush rising on their cheeks.
"so shirls, i heard that you and dr blythe here are doing an english project together?" cole called out, clearly mildly tipsy. no one understood how he never got busted after all these years.
"yes we are, got a problem? jealous, mckenzie?" anne teased, putting a cheeto in her mouth.
"i am not!!!" cole shrieked, pretending to be offended. he whispered so low only she could hear, "he's better for you anyways."
anne spat out her cheetos in shock, leaving the rest of the group speechless. she gave her friend the death stare.
"guys, you wanna know what i've been thinking?"
"what, moody? you've been silent this whole lunch hour." replied ruby gillis, slightly ticked off.
"i've just been thinking. we need to all get together again. how about we meet up, this saturday at the new karaoke bar in town. i'll book us a private table."
"sounds like drinkings involved, count me in." cole raised his glass up in the air.
"me and jerry are totally in!" anne looks over at her brother, sending him a message.
"if annes going, i am." diana and gilbert said in unison.
"i love parties!!! yes!" ruby shrieked.
"well sounds like we have ourselves a plan. meet you all there, saturday at 6pm, we all meet at jer and anne's house. girls can get ready together, boys get ready together as well. we can all travel in style!" moody proposes to the group.
"did i offer you my house?"
"would you have said yes otherwise? exactly."
the rest of the day had went by slow. the same boring lectures by teachers over and over again, the same hours going by the clock and the same dynamic between anne and gilbert.
"woohoo! dr blythe come out, come out wherever you are!" anne teased as she peaked her head around the door of gilbert's locker.
"woah, shirley! you scared me!" he nervously dropped a textbook on the floor, stubbing his toe and panicking.
"you alright?"
"yeah, totally." gilbert replied firmly. he was trying so hard not to stare.
"so... we going to work on our project or are you just gonna stand there and look at me?"
gilbert shook it off and followed her outside to the sidewalk. they fooled around by themselves and almost died on the crosswalk in the span of 15 minutes.

a confortable silence was present in annes bedroom. she was laying on her stomach, writing something in her notebook. gilbert was sitting on the floor gazing at her.
"so we never clarified in class, are we going for something inspiring or something about pouring your heart out?" anne asks gilbert, not sure if she broke the tension or made it stronger.
"i dont know, you decide."
"now i think i have something in mind." she grinned down to gilbert, him smiling like a fool.
"i really admire you, shirley."
"what?"
"you heard me." gilbert tried to hold his ground. "cmon, stand up"
"why?"
"just do it." anne stood up, giving him a puzzled look. gilbert reached around anne's body, bringing her closer in to an embrace.
the hug was short and sweet, but it meant more than anything in the whole world for the both of them.
"what was that for...?"
"you looked like you needed it."
his eyes pierced straight through her soul. it was almost intimidating, although she found much needed comfort in it.
"shirley, are you crying?" gilbert questioned, feeling her pain slightly. anne burst out in to tears, latching on to gilbert.
"c'mere."

"you wanna talk about it?"
"its- just-t y-our eyes..."
"its alright, you dont need to tell me." gilbert soothed anne, placing her on her bed.
