Through her eyes, life hadn't been easy for Julie Hill. Despite being a lifelong resident of small-town Hawkins, Indiana, Julie has always felt like an outsider. Unable to truly make a connection with anyone in her life, Julie travels through life, like a ghost, and just observes others, wondering what it would be like to be noticed. She watches her life pass through her own two eyes each day, and there is nothing more Julie could want than to somehow feel a part of that very own life, even if it's a pretty shitty one. Julie knows there is something better out there for her, she just doesn't know where to look.
As of fall 1983, Julie is a sophomore at Hawkins High School. She resides in a small house on the outskirts of Hawkins, in a heavily wooded area with her mother, along with her mom's on-and-off boyfriend. Julie tries to cure the unhappiness that pairs with her mundane, dull existence by listening to music on her walkman, and riding on her rusted, red bicycle. Julie's solitude-ridden, tiresome life drastically changes on a chilly November night when she witnesses something she probably shouldn't have.
