"Happy, huh?"

"I'm slow and wasn't as smart as everyone, but even after I leave, I'll do my best!" It was now nighttime. Everyone gathered around to say goodbye to their little sister.
'Conny...'
"I'll have Little Bunny, so I'll be okay."
"Conny..." Don started.
"I don't want to leave anymore. I want to stay here!" the little girl cried out.
"Conny... Conny!" Don began to cry as tears started to form in Emma's eyes.
Then she was gone.
You clapped your hands. "Alright then! We should start cleaning up for the night so that mama doesn't get mad when she returns. Nat, Anna, could you two help the younger ones to bed?"
"Mhm!"
"Okay!"
You and the rest of the older kids began to clean up for the night until you heard Emma shriek. "CONNY!? YOU'RE KIDDING ME?!"
"Em! The younger ones are already in bed!" you scolded as you entered the room. It appeared that Conny had forgotten her sacred Little Bunny on the dining table.
"But, Conny's already gone," Gilda said as she followed you.
"What do we do?" Emma panicked.
"There's still time," Ray said, joining the group. "From the window, I saw the lights on the gate were still on. Mom isn't back either, so I don't think Conny has left yet."
"[Y/N], Emma, let's hurry," Norman said, putting his broom down.
"You guys go. I don't want to go anywhere near the gat"
"Wait [Y/N], you should go with them," Ray said, putting his hand on your shoulder. You glared at him for pushing even though he new how terrified of the gate you were.
"It's alright, I already did an official goodbye to Conny, and besides I'll have to finish Norman answer Emma's chores if they are to return Little Bunny," You said with a point. Norman smiled at you and ran out the door, Emma following close behind.
'Dammit,' Ray thought. 'Why didn't you go with them!'
You finished their chores quickly and went to wait for Emma and Norman. You stood by a window with a lantern in hand. You were worried that they would get caught. It was against the rules to go to the gate.
Ray approached you from behind, resting his head on your shoulders and closing his eyes. Ray was very attached to you, just as you were to him. You rested your head against his. You sat there in a comfortable silence as you waited for Emma and Norman to return.
When you heard the doors open, you and Ray separated and went to confront the two."Welcome back. How did it go?"
"Was Conny still there? Were you able to meet her foster parents?" You asked with a smile. That smile quickly faded as you saw their condition. Something was wrong.
"We didn't make it," Norman stated. The lie was so fake you internally cringed. 'What the hell happened?' Emma didn't even make eye contact. They soon went upstairs. You glanced at Ray, who had an unreadable expression.
You sighed and went upstairs, Ray following you. You split ways and went inside the bedroom to find Emma and Norman awake in bed. You thought that maybe mom caught them or Conny's foster parents said some cruel things to them. You shrugged it off and got into bed.
You heard Norman's bed creak as he walked over to Emma's bed. You couldn't make out their whispers. You thought you heard whimpers. Was Emma crying? 'What the hell happened?!' You decided to confront the duo in the morning as you were too tired to move.
You stared at the clock while Emma fell asleep. 'Ugh... not again... can't I just get one full night of rest?!' You taking a while to fall asleep at night happened quite often. Ever since you turned 4, you would take a minimum of 30 minutes trying to sleep.
So, to pass the time, you decided to head to the library. You walked past a sleeping Emma with red puffy eyes. 'hmm... so she was crying. I'll have to ask her about it later on.' You look at the clock. '12:33 in the morning'
After walking out, you stopped when you heard footsteps behind you. "You know you're not allowed at the gate," the voice spoke.
You turned around to find mama in her sleepwear eyeing you down. "It wasn't me! It was Emma and Norman. They wanted to return Little Bunny. I had nothing to do with it, I swear! I was cleaning upstairs, and I only noticed they left once they arrived at the gate," you explained in a whisper, trying to avoid punishment.
She looked at you for a second before blinking. She apologized for jumping to conclusions and asked you what you were doing up so late. "Oh, I couldn't sleep. Not because of a nightmare or anything. I was going to the library to read some books to get me sleepy again."
"Hmm.. alright then, I'll allow it. Don't stay up too late, or you'll get extra chores in the morning."
You silently chuckled and thanked her while finishing your journey to the library. You picked a new [F/G] book and began to read. You climbed up to the loft and wrapped yourself with blankets and pillows. Reading was a nice occasional hobby.
As you were getting set, you didn't notice when a second entity walked in and began to climb the ladder. You looked up to find Ray coming to join you.
"Ray?" you whispered. " What are you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same thing."
"I couldn't sleep. Just didn't feel tired anymore."
"Same. I saw you talking to mama and followed you here. I hope you don't mind."
"No, of course not," you said. You opened your blanket, signaling to come. Ray smiled and laid next to you, using your arm as a pillow. You threw the blanket around both of you, picking up your book.
You didn't understand why Ray was different. You loved your family and always wished the best for them, but it was different with Ray. You couldn't help but smile whenever he made eye contact with you or put his hand on your shoulder. Then again, you had a special bond with him ever since you could remember. And that's saying something.
You closed your eyes and finally fell asleep. But that didn't last long when you woke up again. You turned your head to look at the clock on the wall. '5:52 a.m.' 'Ugh,' you glared at the clock, mad at it for some reason. 'Stupid clock.'
You sigh, looking to where Ray was supposed to be, only to find him not there anymore. You shrugged it off, thinking he went back to bed. You decided to do the same so that Emma wouldn't worry about your whereabouts when she woke up.
As you lay in bed, waiting for the chime of the clock, you couldn't help but ponder a topic that frequently crossed your mind. 'Why is life so perfect here? Why? Why are all of our clothes white? Why do we have uniforms and not regular clothing? Why is mom always so happy all the time? It's like she some perfect robot. Why not make life more realistic? You're supposed to be preparing us for the real world, so why make our lives perfect if that's not how life is out there?" You shrugged off the thought and before you knew it Emma was already up and ready, although missing a sense of enthusiasm she usually had.
